Some of it goes: Oh, Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land As on the highest mount I stand

Not exactly a folk song, but if anyone has the lyrics I'd appreciate

SWEET BEULAH LAND
Squire Parsons

I'm kind of homesick for a country
To which I've never been before.
No sad goodbyes will there be spoken,
For time won't matter any more.

CHO:
Beulah land, I'm longing for you;
And some day on thee I'll stand.
Where my home shall be eternal;
Beulah land, sweet Beulah land.

I'm looking now across the river
Where my faith will end in sight;
There's just a few more days to labor,
Then I will take my heavenly flight.

The Beulah Land song that I love is this one, which I know from the singing of Helen Schneyer. Here's the chorus:

I'm standing, on the mountain, undeneath a clear blue sky--(Praise God!)
I'm drinking, from the fountain, that never will run dry!
I'm feasting, on the manna, from the heavenly supply!
For I am dwelling in Beaulah Land!

Sir Jeep,

Did you play it?

As I have heard Squire Parsons sing it, there are long drawn-out phrases made out of some of the words, and I was not sure if you had heard it that way-- it would affect chord placement on those chord-to-chord places where there is no new word stuck in. See what I mean? The placmenet in the book seemed not to reflect how he sings it-- but really anyone else's arrangement ought to be just a starting point for each of us as we take a piece into our hearts and run it outen our mouths.

And thanks, dear, but no, I don't got game on this one-- I got BOOK! *G*

Now when do I get a Jeep Man Special tape with all you have been learning? Huh? What about THAT??

Maybe title the project, The Jeepness of Jeep. *G*

The only way I have ever heard this is a cappella as a sort of call & response at Sacred Harp singings in northeast Alabama. I found a couple of recording on the internet with lots of accompaniment that just don't do a thing for me compared to what we do with it at the singings.

Here are the recordings I found bensonsound and The Providence Quartet Can anyone recommend a good one?

I did find an interesting background article here: Herald Dispatch

From: Q (Frank Staplin)

No one seems to have posted the hymn "Beulah Land," although it is the inspiration for several songs such as "Sweet Beulah Land" (Parsons) and parodies such as Dakota Land, Saskatchewan, etc., based on the refrain, which are in the DT. Several mentions in posts.

Lyr. Add: BEULAH LAND
(Lyrics by E. P. Stites, music J. R. Sweney)

I've reached the land of corn and wine,
And all its riches freely mine;
Here shines undimmed one blissful day,
For all my night has passed away.

Refrain:
O Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land,
As on thy highest mount I stand,
I look away across the sea,
Where mansions are prepared for me,
And view the shining glory shore,
My Heav'n, my home forever more!

My Savior comes and walks with me,
And sweet communion here have we;
He gently leads me by His hand,
For this is Heaven's border land.

Refrain

A sweet perfume upon the breeze,
Is borne from ever vernal trees,
And flow'rs, that never fading grow
Where streams of life forever flow.

Refrain

The zephyrs seem to float to me,
Sweet sounds to Heaven's melody,
As angels with the white robed throng
Join in the sweet redemption song.

Refrain

Beulah Land
Always reminds me of the Dust Bowl and Depression days, when, in the west, someone was always humming the refrain or singing a line or two.
Sheet music at Levy Sheet Music and American Memory, published 1878 with music by John R. Sweney, Ditson & Co., Philadelphia. Words by Edgar P. Stites, 1876. Levy copy better: Beulah Land

Here is the version by Tom Isern, from "The Great Plains Songbook," www.plainsfolk.com/songs/. It combines versions to satisfy everybody: Song Book

Lyr. Add: BEULAH LAND (parody)

I've reached the land of corn and wheat,
Of pumpkin pies and potatoes sweet.
I bought my farm from Uncle Sam,
And now I'm happy as a clam.

Refrain 1
Oh, Kansas Land, sweet Kansas Land,
As on the highest hill I stand,
I look the pleasant landscape o'er,
For acres broad I'll sigh no more,
Till Gabriel's trump, in loud command,
Says I must leave my Kansas Land.

My chickens, they are Plymouth Rock,
My horses, Clydesdale Norman stock,
My cattle Durham, very fine
And Poland China are my swine.

Refrain 2
Dakota land, Dakota Land,
As on the highest hill I stand,
I look the pleasant landscape o'er,
For acres broad I'll sigh no more,
Till Gabriel's trump, in loud command,
Says I must leave Dakota Land.

Saskatchewan, the land of snow,
Where winds are always on the blow,
Where people sit with frozen toes--
And why we stay here, no one knows.

Refrain 3
Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan,
There's no place like Saskatchewan.
We sit and gaze across the plains,
And wonder why it never rains,
Till Gabriel doth his trumpet sound,
And says the rain has gone around.

Isern remarks; "Somehow people in North Dakota think the verse about Saskatchewan is hilarious, and I think it's funny they think it's funny."

Does anyone have the sheet music for "Sweet Beulah Land," Squire Parsons Jr.? There are two 'last' verses not included in the post by WYSIWYG. Is either or both in the sheet music?

There my home shall be eternal,
Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land.
Beulah Land, Beulah Land,
Beulah Land, Sweet Beulah Land.

I see the lights I hear the singing
A brand new song of joy divine
My soul rejoices just in knowing
That soon these pleasures will be mine.

Hear Mike Perkey sing "Beulah Land," based on the Squire Parsons song. Beulah Land
Here are his words- not very different, but easier to copy than to explain."

Beulah Land (Mike Perkey)

I'm homesick for a city
To which I've never been before
No sad good bye's will ever be spoken
For time won't matter anymore.

Beulah Land, I'm longing for you
And someday on thee I'll stand
There my home shall be eternal
Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land.

Oh now I'm looking, well I'm looking for a river
Where my faith is going to end insight
Oh there's just a few more days
We're going to have to labor
Then I will take my Heavenly flight.

Beulah Land, I'm longing for you
And someday on thee I'll stand
There my home shall be eternal
Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land.

My daughters Andie (11) and Hilary (9) and I used to sing the original Squire Parsons in 3 part harmony.   Andie used to do a lovely echoing alto part for the chorus. Our church was Beulah Baptist.

This song was sung by Hilary at Andie's funeral in May 2005 (2 weeks before what would have been Andie's 24th birthday). Heartbreaking -Andie was not there to sing that sweet harmony part but I could hear it nevertheless.

Miraculously, I have performed it straight at 2 folk sessions. Would like to learn that echoing part Andie used to sing on my lap dulcie. Much work needed on this.

The chords will help me accompany on guitar. Thanks for posting them.

Hello, GUEST 30 Dec 08 - 07:50 AM.

"Beulah" is a Hebrew word that means "married". However, in Isaiah 62:4 (KJV), the word Beulah is usually interpreted as a referent for the land of Israel.

See http://www.answers.com/topic/beulah-1

"A symbolic name for Israel, in referring to the restoration of Jerusalem, which will no longer be called "Forsaken" or "Desolate", but "Hephzibah" – "My delight is in her" and "Beulah" – "Married" (Is 62:4).

Also, see Beulah Land in Christian Music Tradition,
Isaiah 62:4 (KJV)

Here's an excerpt from http://www.claudemariottini.com/user/Roberts%20Beula%20Land%20Complete.pdf:

"The significance of a new name is also noted by Freehof who states, "A new name is a symbol of a new and better life." In Israelite culture, the giving of a new name also was "a sign that the receiver of the name is coming under the authority of the giver of the name." In giving Zion a new name, God was calling Zion to be under his authority.

The word "Hephzibah" is translated from Hebrew as "My Delight is in Her". This word is expressing God's love and tenderness towards His people. According to Haak, the word "Hephzibah" is "found in only two places in the Bible. First, it was what the God-fearing
Hezekiah called his wife. In II Kings 21:1 we learn that Hezekiah's wife was called "Hephzibah" and Hezekiah could say concerning his wife, 'My delight is in her'." God is delighting in his people. In the last part of Isaiah 62: 4 God is calling them into a relationship "where thy land shall be married." The marriage imagery is used to indicate that Yahweh is inviting his people to be in relationship with Him. This is what the word Beulah is signifying. Yahweh is the groom, Israel the bride. The marriage theme is used throughout the Old Testament and the author of verse 4 uses it to "describe the relationship between Yahweh and his people, much as his predecessors, Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Second Isaiah, had done."35 Isaiah 62:4-5 gives a complete picture of the marriage imagery"...

"Thy land shall be called Beulah" Isaiah 62:4

1. I am dwelling on the mountain,
Where the golden sunlight gleams,
O'er a land whose wondrous beauty,
Far exceeds my fondest dreams,
Where the air is pure ethereal,
Laden with the breath of flowers,
They are blooming by the fountain,
'Neath the amaranthine bowers.

CHORUS: Is not this the Land of Beulah?
Blessed, blessed land of light;
Where the flowers bloom forever,
And the sun is always bright.

2. I can see far down the mountain
Where I wandered weary years;
Often hindered in my journey
By the ghosts of doubts and fears,
Broken vows and disappointments
Thickly sprinkled all the way,
But the spirit led unerring,
To the land I hold today.

3. I am drinking at the fountain,
Where I ever would abide;
For I've tasted life's pure river,
And my soul is satisfied;
There's no thirsting for life's pleasures,
Nor adorning, rich and gay:
For I've found a richer treasure,
One that fadeth not away.

Old hymn, often used in lined-out singing. Hear it sung in this traditional way by members of Mt. Olivet Regular Baptist Church, Blackey, KY, led by Elwood Cornett, at Digital Library of Appalachia:
I Am Dwelling on the Mountain
'Click here to display item' leads to the singing.

The lyrics and music are used as a frontispiece to: Elder John R. Daily, 1918 (and continuing reprints), "Primitive Baptist Hymn & Tune Book," The Primitive Baptist Library, Carthage, IL.

More information on the age or origin of this hymn would be appreciated.

A fourth verse and musical arrangement* was added by Harriet W. R. Qua and John W. Dadman in late 19th c. The verse detracts from the simple perfection of the original.

(4*
Tell me not of heavy crosses,
Nor the burdens hard to bear,
For I've found this great salvation
Makes each burden light appear;
And I love to follow Jesus,
Gladly counting all but dross,
Worldly honors all forsaking,
For the glory of the cross.)

Cyberhymnal; Is Not This the Land of Beulah?

Lyr. Add: THE LAND OF BEULAH (Bradbury)

There is a land, a happy land
Where tears are wiped away
From ev'ry eye by God's own hand,
And night is turned to day.

Chorus:
O come, angel band,
Come and around me stand.
O bear me away on your snowy wings
To my immortal home,
O bear me away on your snowy wings
To my immortal home.

2
There is a home, a happy home,
Where wayward trav'lers rest;
Where toil and langour never come
And ev'ry mourner's blest.
3
There is a port, a peaceful port,
A safe and quiet shore
Where weary mariners resort,
And hear the storms no more.
4
That land be mine, that calm retreat,
That crown of glory bright;
Then I'll esteem each bitter sweet,
And every burden light.

No. 261, with musical score.
John R. Daily, 1918 etc., "Primitive Baptist Hymn & Tune Book," The Ptimitive Baptist Library, Carthage, IL.

Reminiscent of "Happy Land," Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Wm. Walker.

Sheet music for BEULAH LAND, attributed to Edgar Page and J. R. Sweney, can be found in Franklin Square Song Collection, No. 2 By John Piersol McCaskey (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884) and in Favorite Songs and Hymns for School and Home by John Piersol McCaskey (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1899).

The lyrics seem to correspond to those posted by Q above at 07 Jan 05 - 02:30 PM.

I don't know why the attribution is different; perhaps the lyrics are set to a different tune?

Subject: Lyr Add: I'VE PITCHED MY TENT IN BEULAH (Harris)
From: Nathan in Texas

Here's another Beulah song. If someone wants to annotate all the scriptural allusions, feel free!

"I'VE PITCHED MY TENT IN BEULAH"
by Mrs. M.J. Harris, 1908

I long ago left Egypt, for the promised land,
I trusted in my Savior and to His guiding hand,
He led me out to vict'ry thro' the great red sea,
I sang a song of triumph, and shouted, "I am free."

(chorus)
You need not look for me, down in Egypt's sand,
For I have pitched my tent far up in Beulah's land;
You need not look for me, down in Egypt's sand,
For I have pitched my tent far up in Beulah's land;

I followed close beside Him and the land soon found,
I did not halt nor tremble, for Canaan I was bound,
My Guide I fully trusted and He led me in,
I shouted, "Hallelujah, my heart is free from sin."

I started for the highlands where the fruits abound,
I pitched my tent near Hebron, there grapes of Eschol found,
With milk and honey flowing, and new wine so free,
I have no love for Egypt, it has no charm for me.

My heart is so enraptured as I press along,
Each day I find new blessings, which fill my heart with song,
I'm ever marching onward to that land on high,
Some day I'll reach my mansion that's builded in the sky.

Thanks so much to all of you. I looked in all my books for this Hymn and it was not there. Now I know why. It was written in 1979 and all of my books are old. I love this Hymn.

Subject: Beulah Land (the original hymn)
From: GUEST,Sigrid

Hello! You guys are great. OK, here's the thing, see. As much as I LOVE the song Sweet Beulah Land by Squire Parsons (and I truly do), I absolutely LOVE the old hymn Beulah Land by Edgar Page Stites (1836–1921). Remember that one? "I've reached the land of corn and wine la la la la?"

My question to you wonderful folks is, Do any of you know of any other singers besides Burl Ives who sing it?????? I mean, come on. That hymn is so splendid, I just don't understand how come nobody else seems to sing it. Any ideas?

I go on to youtube now and then, but when I search for Beulah Land, I get MILLIONS of hits for Squire Parsons' song, which, like I said, I dearly love. But enough already. And Burl Ives' version of Stites' is great too. I just don't get it.

If any of you folks have it on your ancient vinyls, how's about posting it on youtube? LOL Shake up the world. I'm beginning to suspect that folks today don't even know the words to that old hymn, know what I mean?

Oh Beulah Land, sweet Beulah Land. As on the highest mount I stand . . . la la la la.    What a wonderful old hymn!!!!!!

I'm aware of this song because I heard some of the parodies, then learned more about the original. The parodies are quite interesting.

Hi, Sigrid -
I've moved you over here with what we already have, so you can build on what has gone before. I see we have a "corn and wine" version and a "corn and wheat" version above (for T-totallers?).

YouTube is so full of the Squire Parsons "I'm Kinda Homesick" song, that it's hard to find anything else. For example, here's a version by the Cactus Cuties (don't ask): Here's a version of the song you're seeking, performed by Rev. Alan and Ellen Ives of Wyldewood Baptist Church of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Do you think they're related to Burl?
Here's another: -Joe-
