Subject: String trouble - please help! From: Ian HP Date: 20 Aug 01 - 03:15 PM I'm trying to get hold of a set of acoustic phosphor bronze strings (in the UK, but I'm happy to buy by post) with a .14 top string, bottom something like .62 I guess, as it's for a severely de-tuned alternative tuning. I'm having no luck via shops or the internet. Any clues, anyone? |

Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: Justa Picker Date: 20 Aug 01 - 03:41 PM Hi again Ian. I just went and checked the 2 sites above that I linked to. You'll be able to find a .14 but not a .62, as that would appear to exceed even the "heavy" gage. Closest is a .58 and you should look for heavy gage sets. Best of luck. |
Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: Jon Freeman Date: 20 Aug 01 - 04:05 PM I've tried a few sites. Can get to a .59 here but that's as heavy as I've managed to find. Jon |
Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: Phil Cooper Date: 20 Aug 01 - 04:18 PM The Irish guitarist/fiddler, Brian Taheny from the Toronto area has one of his guitars tuned low and uses an electric bass string for it. I don't know the guage, but that may be method. |
Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: Ian HP Date: 20 Aug 01 - 05:47 PM I couldn't find any *sets* of 14s here. Have I missed them? On the D'Addario site there weren't sets, but there's enough singles there to be able to make up a set from that. This may be what I gave to do, unless anyone knows different? |
Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: Jon Freeman Date: 20 Aug 01 - 07:20 PM Sorry Ian, missed the word "set". I would guess building from singles is likely to be the only way. Even for me, playing tenor banjo in GDAE, finding sets can be hard looking round music shops and I usually buy singles. When I'm organised, I use Sully for the singles as I've found he has a very reliable mail order service and (maybe in my mind) I like the Picato strings on the banjo. Jon |
Subject: RE: String trouble - please help! From: mooman Date: 20 Aug 01 - 08:08 PM Newtone strings in the UK will make up phosphor bronze sets of any gauge you like. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post up the address and telephone number as soon as I locate it (in one of numerous instrument cases!) Best regards mooman
