Subject: What is MIDI2txt?
From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au

There has been some information about how to use and install the MIDI to text converter, but this question is more general.

First of all, what does it do? Does it produce an ascii file from a MIDI file? Can it produce a file in standard musical notation from a MIDI file? (In giff or some other graphic format, or even better Postscript.)

Is it a program that is available on the net, or has it been developed by (someone at) Mudcat? Is the source code available? If so, where?

The reason I ask is because I am using the Linux platform and the executables I see seem to be for MS products.

Thanks,

Murray

Addendum to my last posting:

Now that I re-read some of the threads about MIDI to text, I see there is another possibility.

Is it a program that encodes a MIDI file into an ascii file so that it can be transmitted by programs that are only ascii "clean", to be unencoded at the other end. (like the Mac's binhex, or UNIX's uuencode)? If so, is the encoding in a form that can be decoded by one of the standard mail filters?

Hi, Murray - MIDI2txt is a program designed especially for us Mudcatters by our very own Alan of Australia. It converts a MIDI file to a text file with HTML markups, so that it can be posted (by copy-and-paste) here on the forum. As an extra, added bonus, the program also produces the tune in ABC for those of us too lazy to convert the file back to a MIDI (I plead guilty). The companion program, TXT2MIDI, changes the text file back into MIDI form.
For many moons, we lamented because we were able to swap lyrics here, but not the tunes. Since we are musical sorts by nature, that was simply unacceptable. So, Alan fixed it. It takes a few minutes to read the instructions and learn how to set up the programs, but they're really simple to use one you get the hang of it. Wanna try? Just click here or on the link provided with any of the MIDITXT tunes posted, and you'll have the program in the blink of an eye.

Murray
Note that these are DOS programs and work under DOS WIN3.1 but easiest under WIN95.

Have you checked out The Sydney Folk Home Page?

Cheers,

Thanks for the info Alan and Joe. It looks like I will have to go searching to get something for my platform. Now that I know what it does, I can try to imitate it with UNIX software. One can change MIDI to MusicTeX and then change TeX to HTML, so I guess it can be done, but in a manner like killing a flea with a sledge hammer.

Alan, I would like to ask some technical questions, but I will send you a message. They are probably not of general interest, and this will be a good opportunity to try sending one, as I haven't done that yet.

Yes, you told me about the Sydney folk page, and I read Alison's "calling all Australians". I have it bookmarked and I look in on it periodically. I was interested to see that there is a group in Blackheath because we might be moving up there. They say "no microphones". My kind of place :-)

Hi Murray,

Most of the folk clubs in Sydney are accoustic venues, only occasionally will you see any sort of artists using PA gear.

In praise of Alan's program. Speaking as someone who knows very little about computers.... I find it very easy to use and handy because I can then print out the music.

I only wish more people would use it to put in tunes.

Slainte

Alison

Hi, Ro - this thread is about a proprietary program one of our Mudcatters designed many years ago, to allow us to post MIDI files here. I think the files you seek are related to another program with the same name. You will find an explanation here: http://www.usd.edu/csci/research/theses/graduate/sp2001/emosterd.doc
Also check here for further information: (click).
The program you seek was designed by a professor Günter Nagler, and is apparently available here: http://www2.iicm.edu/Cpub.
