A very good evening indeed, with excellent contributions from your good selves.

I think most of our musicians must have been on holiday - the unaccompanied singing doesn't usually take up quite as much of the proceedings. But that's one of the pleasures of the Bakers: you never really know what to expect, but whatever it is, it will be good.

Please remind Brian that he was meant to forward an audio casette I had recorded for Tim some time ago.

It has the Sean Cannon version of "Wild Rover" using the melodeous Irish tune.

Will do, Bob. He's also supposed to be writing out all the verses of Camborne Hill for me (only 1 verse in the DT).

If anyone else is interested in coming along, The Bakers Arms is in Broad Campden, and the folk evening has been going on the 3rd Tuesday of every month for about 25 years. A bit of everything - unaccompanied and accompanied singing, Carolan/Playford tunes, Celtic, blues harmonica, monologues, etc., etc.

Does the landlord have a Public Entertainment Licence? Or is it a sensible local council that doesn't see one as necessary for such events?

It all happens in the bar - last Tuesday we also had people dining, and others playing dominoes while the music/singing was happening. Some people listen, some don't.

Totally informal - no admission charge, no set order, you just do something if you feel like it and there's a gap. Usually I'll sing about twice in an evening, but I once went two consecutive months without singing, just joining in choruses. This month attendance was down due to holidays (especially instrumentalists), so I did five songs, and the other singers filled their boots too!

But Public Entertainment - nah, it's just a few folks amusing themselves.

There's also a very good folk night on in the Falkland Arms, Great Tew, on a Sunday night. Have moved away, unfortunately, but I hear it still goes on.

Which is just what it is in places where the council starts throwing its weight around and saying they haven't got any choice in the matter (like Weymouth where Shambles is making waves about it, of Waltham Abbey which sparked off the EFDSS Day of Acytion in London on July 19th.) Cases like yours demonstrates that that is a load of cobblers.
