Patiently waiting for khandu to post some information regarding things to do and places to see on our trip from New Orleans to Florence, AL, to Memphis, a lot of it to be done on the Trace. Anybody else wishing to contribute, don't hesitate. I found the Cheseborough book on Amazon, so will order it there if it can't be found locally.

I hadn't looked at this for a few days and glad to see a few more of you took the trouble to reply. I WILL look for that recommended book, but our local library didn't have it the last time I checked for it. Yes, we definitely ARE going to take the Natchez Trace. Sounds good. Thanks again.

In all seriousness, take the trace. I live right smack in the middle of the old Natchez Trace trail where the old Chickasaw Indian Agency complex stood. I know no one will believe me but i heard a horseman plain as day gallop up, rein in and holler "whoa" late one night behind my house and there ain't nothing back there but tangled underbrush. That's not the only time something like that has happened here. Trace is a beautiful road. I rode home about 30 miles down the trace last night after midnight and didn't see a car. Not many places east of the Mississippi where you can say that. Lots of quiet little roadside parks, too. Steve Cheeseborough? I should know that guy i suppose. I live in Mississippi and play old style blues.

Been away for a while and just got back to this thread. Spaw, yes I've just got hold of a copy. I haven't had the chance to go through it properly, but after a quick look I'd say it seems excellent and invaluable for any blues fan heading into the Delta (and further South in Mississippi). It looks to be pretty comprehensive in terms of all the sites covered, but still manages to give a considerable amount of detail. It gives good directions on how to find places - I checked out some of the places I visited and had trouble finding a few years back and with these directions it would have been no problem. It's a little too big for most pockets, but small enough to carry around with you and check without looking too much like a lost tourist. It also has a list of recommended reading reading and listening (to follow or precede your trip) and, very importantly, a good index, which I've often missed in other travel/guide books.

Bluegene, I recommend you get yourself a copy of this and then after your trip you can let us know just how useful it was.

You might find Steve Cheseborough's book Blues Traveling: The Holy Sites of Delta Blues useful. Published this year by the University Press of Mississippi.

Thanks everyone for your help and for your wonderful senses of humor (??). Have traveled a little in AL, MS, and of course from Memphis to Toledo several times, but never from N'awlins up to Memphis - looking forward to this in 5 months' time. Hide all your sisters and female cousins, ok?

Gawd knows I love a good boner!!! Ain't nothin' like a boner and having someone besides Mrs. Palm to use it with. Now in khandu's case, down there in Mississippi, this is never a problem because they have these big families and if you run out of sisters, there's a never ending supply of cousins.

Bluegene....Welcome to the 'Cat! There is no chat room although there was at one time about 4 years ago or more. Since I'm practically brand new to Mudcat, I have a couple of questions about how to use this type of communication (and I guess the first one should be, what, exactly do you call this? A bulletin board? Forum?)

Next, since it is used by so many good people, my original question has disappeared from the main page, but can be found by clicking on Personal Pages. The question is then, how can someone other than me get into my personal page?

My last question, for now, is this. The first link at the top of the page is Lyrics, Forum & Chat. (Therefore answering my first question, I guess, this IS a forum.) But where is the chat? Is there a chat room of sorts, or instant messaging of some kind? Help! And thanks.

Thanks to all who replied to my "trip through the Delta" query, especially Spaw. I, too, am an Ohioan and have been for many years, but did grow up in Louisville, if that makes any difference. I'll be waiting for more detailed tips on our trip. Natchez Trace sounds like a good deal, as we may to to Florence, AL before heading to Memphis.

You might get some ideas from www.louisiana.com. Maps, sightseeing, restaurants, etc, etc. Listen to KBON and Louisiana radio (test them out on the internet)

Highway 61 and Highway 1 run up and down the delta. If you want delta blues, stop in the backwoods bars, but be sure and pack heat.Mississippi has some of the most beautiful state parks in the land,and some primitive roads, too.Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville and Helena will not disappoint...

Actually bluegene, it's just the way they learn to spell in Mississippi. For instance, the word "party" in Mississippi is spelled l-y-n-c-h-i-n-g. Thank goodness for spellcheckers huh?

Mississippi does have it's merits though as the Magnolia State. What a beautiful image. Now I live in Ohio, the Buckeye State.......an inedible, poisonous nut. What can I say...........

Hi Bro....Glad you found this thread and you can give him some worthwhile info.

After you clear the Delta region I think you should take the Natchez Trace on up towards Tupelo. Seriously. It's very pretty drive and although not quite on the way to Memphis, I think it's worth the side trip and won't cost you that much extra mileage.

Ahhhh....... February in Mississippi...........How dismal.

Hopefully my buddy khandu will show up and being a native will have a few ideas for you! You might take a few sidetrips and visit the Tallahatchie Bridge made famous in the song. We ran a thread on it awhile back and I posted the historical content of the song here....CLICK.

Also make sure you visit Big Bubba's Bedsheets in Yazu City . Bubba has a nice selection, all white of course and you can get some real good deals on some used sheets he has. You can barely smell the kerosene. Also get some pillowcases too......just a couple of small holes cut in them, but they're really cheap.

And just up the road there is a tower outside of Greenwood where you can climb to the top and actually see the end of the earth. No shit!!!

Next February, a small group of us "Yankees" will be driving from New Orleans to Memphis. We'd like to experience some of the Delta traditions along the way, if possible, such as juke joints, gravesites, etc. Any suggestions or help will really be appreciated.
