Subject: RE: need sheet music From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Nov 98 - 08:40 PM Hello, all you sheet music fans. Sorry, but we've never had sheet music here. This is a folk music site, and folk musicians get real nervous around sheets of paper that say things like D.C. al Coda :| and stuff like that. We tend to think that any song that won't fit on one sheet of paper might not be worth singing (there are exceptions, of course, and some of our favorite songs have 97 verses). We have lyrics to thousands of folk songs, and simple MIDI tunes to about half the songs. If you want actual sheet music, there are two online libraries of old sheet music that may help. The Lester Levy Collection of Sheet Music (click here) at Johns Hopkins University has a wonderful collection, although some of the music is hard to read because they should use higher-resolution scanning. The UNC Chapel Hill Music Library has more legible copies, but they're not as nicely indexed. Still and all, the price is free, so you can't beat it. Hope that helps. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: need sheet music From: Charlie Baum Date: 04 Nov 98 - 09:06 PM Actually, I'm going to be leading a workshop at the NOMAD Festival (THIS Saturday, November 7th) inu Newtown, Connecticut called "Ex Libris"--about the process of singing (or reviving) folk music, when all you have to go on is transcription, rather than a live or recorded performance. Lomax, Bronson, et. al. DID create "sheet music" for folk songs, after all. |

Subject: RE: need sheet music From: grandbill@juno.com Date: 06 Nov 98 - 12:03 PM I'm looking for the sheet music for two scottish ballads: 1) "Road To Dundee" 2) a song whose last line is "a mile above the town of Tobermory." As best I can determine, this is NOT the song "Road To Tobermory." It's a puzzlement! I will greatly appreciate help from anyone on this. |
Subject: RE: need sheet music From: Bruce O. Date: 06 Nov 98 - 05:59 PM Verses and music of "The Road Tae Dundee" (from Belle Stewart) are in Nigel Gatherer's 'Songs and Ballads of Dundee', #63, 1986. The 2nd? Pomeroy? Some version of "Reynardine"? Look at Reynardine 2 in DT.

Subject: RE: need sheet music From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Feb 99 - 01:20 PM Today there are about 4 threads with titles like "lyrics requested", but with no hint of which song the person is seeking until we actually open the thread. time-consuming...please try to give threads more specific names. |
Subject: RE: need sheet music From: Philippa Date: 23 Feb 99 - 07:46 AM It's come to light that recently the ghost in the machine has been chopping off ends of titles. So 'squeeze box' may not be to blame. The general principle remains, if we can get the system to go along with it. Joe Offer has already written about the problem in other threads. So please don't be offended if you've been scolded for something you didn't do. |

Here's the link: Farewell to Carlingford It's probably NOT a reel, but that's just a quirk of how the Session classifies tunes! No idea abut the other songs requested at the top of the thread! |
