Subject: Say Hey, Josephine
From: GUEST,Laurel
Date: 26 Aug 01 - 03:20 PM

Hello Everyone! It's been a long time since I've been on Mudcat, or at least typed anything...a good year and a half! But anyways, I worked at a camp all summer and heard one of the other staff singing a song called "Say Hey, Josephine", and was wondering if anyone else knows it because I never got a chance to get all of the words from her. It starts like this:

Say hey, Josephine how do you do do you remember me girl the way that I remember you?

and then somewhere in the song is:

you used to live over yonder cross the railroad tracks and every time that it rained I used to carry you on my back

Thanks!

Laurel

You could try looking up "Hello Josephine" or "My Girl Josephine" - it's listed under both titles. A. Domino/ Bartholomew. I once heard a great version of it recorded by Queen Ida and her Zydeco Band "Allo Josephine, Comment vas-tu" same song, different language.

Not complete lyrics:

MY GIRL JOSEPHINE

Hello Josephine
How do you do?
Do you remember me baby
Like I remember you?
You used to laugh at me (or 'you used to hold my hand')
And holler ooh-ooh-ooh

You used to live over yonder
By the railroad tracks
When it rained you didn't walk (or 'you know you didn't walk')
I used to take you on my back (or 'he used to tote you on his back')
Now you mame me believe
We've never been like that

Hello Josephine
How do you do?
Do you remember me baby
Like I remember you?
You used to cry so much
It was a crying shame
I used to walk you home
I used to hold your hand
You used to use my umbrella
Everytime it rained
Now you make believe
It never been like that

Nearly the same as what JenEllen posted above, but the verses are in a different order. Anyway, it shows that JenEllen's words weren't as incomplete as she thought.

MY GIRL JOSEPHINE
(Antoine "Fats" Domino & Dave Bartholomew)

Hello, Josephine. How do you do?
Do you remember me, baby, like I remember you?
You used to laugh at me and holler, "Hoo-hoo-hoo."

I used to walk you home. I used to hold your hand.
You used to use my umbrella every time it rained.
You used to cry so much it was a cryin' shame.

You used to live over yonder by the railroad track.
When it rained, you couldn't walk. I used to tote you on my back.
Now you tryin' to make believe it was no days like that.

Hello, Josephine. How do you do?
Do you remember me, baby, like I remember you?
You used to laugh at me and holler, "Hoo-hoo-hoo."

[Recorded by Fats Domino, Imperial 5704, 1960.]

I wonder if the "military jody" version predated the hit R&B record, or vice versa.

Those marching cadence somgs ar true folklore, and can be a copyright-free source of songwriting material. On the other hand, drill sergeants are certainly free to adapt already-existing popular songs, and in fact often do so. When I was in basic training at Fort Dix, Sgt. Williams did a great job singing us to and from the rifle range to the tune to "Poppa Was a Rolling Stone," a fairly recent Motown hit at the time.

In this case, I believe that the hit record came first, and was subsequently used for marching drill.

Dave Bartholonew was the brains behind the great success of Antoine "Fats" Domino, cowriting most of his hits and arranging, and acting as bandleader on, all of them. A great and underappreciated figure in the history of rock 'n'n roll and of American popular music in general. Dave is still alive, and still gigging, at an age approaching 90 years.

"Do you remember ME baby" is definitely the original lyric. Since the song is addressed to Josephine, a woman's name, it was written to be sung by a male singer. The cover version by a girl singer that GUEST,GUEST,j recalls was, to say the least, atypical.

The great Snooks Eaglin does a great version of this tune quite regularly.

The cadence I remember was sang by a drill instructor staff sergeant Holmes, USMC Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. It is a marching cadence, and starts:

Hello josephine, how do you do,
do you remember me girl,
like I remember you?

I used to walk you home,
right after school,
we used to hang out,
down by the pool.

Hello Josephine, how do you do?
do you remember me girl,
like I remember you?

I used to take you out,
to the movie show,
we used to make out,
up in the back row,

hello josephine, how do you do?
do you remmber me girl,
like I remember you?

We used to go out,
real late at night,
and we'd make love,
in the pail moonlight

hello josephine, how do you do?
do you remember me girl,
like I remember you?

wo wo wo-a woah
hey hey hey hey

do you remember me girl?
like I remember you.

Not sure if you're looking for the USMC version.

Ok so the so you are asking for is an old song I used to sing every summer I went to girl scout camp. It goes like this.

Say hey Josephine. How do you do? Do you remember me girl the way that I remember you?

You used to live over yonder. Pass the railroad tracks. And every time it rained, I used to carry you on my back.

Well alrighty alright. Tonight tonight. Say hey say hey. Well alrighty alright.

You used to use sweet sue. I'll remember you too. And im coming home do you won't be all alone.

Well alrighty alright. Tonight tonight. Say hey say hey. Well alrighty alright.

The song was not about a girl friend or anything like that. It was written about his niece whose name is Josephine. One of the nicest people you would ever meet. She still lives in New Orleans.

Hey Hey Josephine

How do you do

Do you remember me girl

Like I remember you

We used to go to school

My favorite subject was you

The only "A" I every made

Was on the homework you gave

I used to walk you home

I used to carry your books

Whoa ho Josephine

You used to give me those looks

Used to live in a shack

Down by the railroad track

And every time it ever rained

You'd be calling my name

And here's to you Sweet Sue

I remember you too

And I'm a-comin home

So you won't be all alone
