THE LIGHTNING TREE
Words and music: Stephen Francis

1, Down in the meadow where the wind blows free,
In the middle of a field stands the lightning tree,
Its limbs all torn from the day it was born,
For the tree was born in a thunder-storm.
Chorus:
Grow, grow the lightning tree
It’s never too late for you and me,
Grow, grow the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily

2, Down in the meadow where the wind blows light,
The lightning struck in the middle of the night
Its limbs stripped bare by the lightning flare,
The lightning flare was a wild affair
Cho:

3, Down in the valley where the wind blows cold,
The lightning tree stands stiff and old,
Branches bent when the lightning rent,
The lightning rent from the firmament.
Cho:

4, Down in the valley with the wind in the west,
The lightning tree faced up to the test
Its heart went snap when it took the rap,
The terrible rap of the thunder clap.
Cho:

5, Down in the valley where the wind blows free,
A whisper of green in the lightning tree,
Dreams come true if you want them to,
If you want them to then it’s up to you.
Cho:

I uploaded my 12-string version of this song eight years ago on YouTube including the lyrics and chords. At that time YouTube had their own app for adding the lyrics on-screen. However, in 2017 they made them obsolete and since that time I have had to find other ways of adding them. In this case, I have added them in the information accompanying the video which can be found at:
The Lightning Tree (Including lyrics and chords)

"Lightning Tree" seems to have a great similarity to "The Wellerman"
Was the tune for "Lightning Tree" taken from "The Wellerman"? Or was "The Wellerman" remembered only as lyrics, and brought back to the tune of "Lightning Tree"?

This is intended as a serious question!

Follyfoot is one of the most overlooked TV classics, a bucolically weird programme, a kind of Powell and Pressburger for kids with horses. Fantastic stuff from the opening titles to the last frame.

LIGHTNING!!! not LIGHTENING........

The Lightning Tree
Written by Steven Francis
Performed by the Settlers

Down in the meadow where the wind blows free,
In the middle of a field stands a lightning tree.
It's limbs all torn from the day it was born
For the tree was born in a lightning storm.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
It's never too late for you and me;
Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.

Down in the meadow where the wind blows light,
The lightning struck in the middle of the night.
Limbs stripped bare by the lightning flare
The lightning flare was a wild affair.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
It's never too late for you and me;
Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.

Down in the meadow where the wind blows cold,
The lightning tree stands stiff and old.
Branches rent when the lightning rent
The lightning rent from the firmament.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
It's never too late for you and me;
Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.

Down in the meadow with the wind in the west,
The lightning tree faced up to the test.
Its heart went snap when it took the rap,
the terrible rap of the thunder clap.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
It's never too late for you and me;
Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.

Down in the meadow when the wind blows free,
A whispering breeze in the lightning tree.
Dreams come true if you want them to
If you want them to, then it's up to you.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.
Grow, grow, the lightning tree
It's never too late for you and me.

Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
Never give in too easily.
Grow, grow, the lightning tree,
It's never too late for you and me.
