Just in case some may have missed it, I wanted to let everyone know some of us have been having a good time sharing genealogy tips, links, successes over in the Genealogy Forum atJon's Annexe which he so kindly started.

Aine has made a very generous offer to do lookups on her new 35 cd Family Tree Maker databases and we've got some terrific links posted.

Feel free to join in, please.

kat, the ancestor worshipper:-)

Iamjohne.....if you are American (not sure about across the pond...though it wouldn't surprise me) you can go start at the local Mormon Church....they tend to have great geneological resources at their disposal....and it also tends to be free of charge....and you do not have to be a member to use them either....

They also have folks on hand who are more than willing to help you get started and to answer questions if need be...

I went out once and looked up my ancestors but they were all dead and I had a really tough time getting any conversation going with them. One of them did tell me to get lost and another to drop dead, but I couldn't see how that would help if they were all so damn standoffish and all. I mean like I don't mind trying to oblige these old dead guys and all, but I'd like some guarantee that they'd at least be available for a little BS now and then.

Any of you Genetical folks have that problem?

Spaw

Some folks do not want their ancestry uncovered for their own reasons. Then again I suspect that some ancestors would prefer not to be re-linked with (some of) their descendants if given the choice.

I think it runs in the family, Pat. In other words, if your grandfather didn't have any children, chances are you won't either. However, it sounds like at least some of them have good taste. Wonder how that happened?

Seriously, I've occasionally tried to find out more about my ancestors. All four of my grandparents, all of whom did have children, were from Eastern Europe: Bessarabia (now Moldova) and Ukraine. There's a Jewish Genealogy website, for those who are interested, and it's been helpful....I found a probable relative in Western Canada! Thanks for those other suggestions, kat.

Aloha,
Mark

Catspaw, when you go to the graveyard, take a bottle of malt with you to share with them. By the time the malt is half gone, I'm sure you will have a conversation going. The LDS (Mormons) have stake or meeting houses in a number of cities outside of Utah. Genealogical groups lucky enough to have one in their city sometimes hold their meetings in them. There are usually a lot of aids to genealogy there. The internet site offers quite a bit.

I do a little genealogy in my spare time. There is a Family History Centre very near to my home, I try to go there at least twice a month. If I can help in any way please let me know.

I got back 170 years and more on one line, it was lucky they all lived in the same village!! When my mother was at the village school in the 1930's, there were 37 children there with the same surname, all related to one family that moved to the village in 1814. My aunty still lives there now.....

In total I've covered 230 and more years, but have lots more to find yet!!

If you intend to look up your family tree, the first place to go is to your oldest living relative. They can put you on the right track before you consult databases and the Mormons.

Consult your old relatives with care! I am still trying to weed out the tall tales they told me. I was sorry to find out that I wasn't Billy the Kid's long lost grandson.
