What have you been listening to to-day? I've been rediscovering Paul Simon's "Graceland", found in a record shops' bargan bin on CD for £3. Continueing to enjoy "The Clergy's Lamentation" by Donal Maguire and I am now on the second time round "AISLINGI CEOIL" The Music of Dreams with Tony Mac Mahon and Noel Hill. cheers

Bitchin an whinin, mostly. But my work is done, so now it's time to relax to a bit of Janis Ian, inspired by another thread... and then, the BBQ / seesion begins with lots of Irish Trad and Trouble tunes... an a wee jar or three.

I've been listening to the Folk/Roots channel of my new digital tv box... Not bad, but really mellow...

A little 'broad' in it's scope, even for me...

But it beats hell out of radio!!!!

The latest album by Rory Campbell and Malcolm Stitt of Deaf Shepherd, also Liz Carroll, also The Young Tradition. Later going to a heavy metal nightclub. You can't beat a wide range of musical taste

First a bit of John Williams...classical guitar to go with my morning cup of coffee on the porch...then me, mostly, plus the usual competition I get from the birds when I practice on the front porch.... I'm trying to learn to sing quietly...have a hospice gig in a couple of weeks and after years of trying to achieve some volume, find it not really appropriate for Hospice work... Housework next and for that..definitely The Buena Vista Club...

In the car al day: Rory McCleod "Footsteps and Heartbeats", Bob Dylon "World Gone Wrong"which incidentally has a wicked version of 'Stagger Lee' and Pete Morton "One Big Joke", at the moment I'm listening to a collection of Luiz Gonzaga the King of Baião ( a dance music from the Northeast of Brazil), recorded in the 50s.

I am listening to Norman Blake's new one - a choice offering of mostly traditional songs and tunes: 'Flower From the Fields of Alabama' Shanachie 6053. Its highlight for me is a delightful 6-minute rendition of Mississippi Sheiks' 'Sitting on Top of the World' that, with Bob Chuckrow on second guitar, captures that singular mood which Gordon Bok once described in a note to 'Reedy Lagoon' as 'summer sadness'.

I had quite a diverse group entertaining me today-a lot of Irish music. Johnny McEvoy,Mick Maloney,Eileen Ivers,and Joan Osborn. The star was Paddy Reilly-never get tired of him.In the car-Simon & Garfunkel,Everlys,Rod Stewart and Roy Orbison. Gloredhel, do you know Cup of Joy by Jo Stafford? The Seattle Guitar Orchestra as I attended practice this morning. We're not sounding that bad for 20 guitars.
Norman Blake,The Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. Music from Fiji. Debussy, most his orchestra works.
Tomarrow, whatever the church band plays, whatever the restraunt plays, and whatever I choose to play.

Since then, a boatload of online MIDI's that I grabbed to work on later, from the Pentecostal Hymnal Sorcha found online today.

Oh yeah, and a smokin' major-key version of Shady Grove on the Grand Ole Opry Teevee show tonight, with Ricky Skaggs and his gang of miscreants leading it so fast I decided it must be what they call a breakdown. On Shady Grove. Who knew?

This afternoon a compiled tape in my vehicle while on the way to retrieve a few bales of hay: Some Old Blind Dogs/Richard Thompson/Dave Alvin/Bill Munro/Hank Snow/Jimmy Shand/Stan Rogers/Tom Waits and cuts from HMS Pinafore. You can't get much more eclectic than that and its probably why I spend most of my time in a car by myself.

In the pub - some nameless pap whilst watching Metal Anthems on AMTV (alternative music TV), which was weird because the songs on the sound system were not those on the telly. At one point Marylin Manson was singing along with Macy Grey!!

Off-thread; Ah, Mister MacTattie----your Tony is different from mine! I harhoured high hopes that you would be referring to the fella I know well---'specially since I was betting that you were from the North of England [Ray Fisher, Archie, Vin Garbutt, etc..] The Tony I know hails from Hexham, Northumberland, plays no instruments, as far as I know, but has arguably the finest tenor voice and one of the greatest knacks for song interpretation that I've heard in forty-plus years of folk clubs. He lacked only one thing --ambition. Ach!---We live and learn!! Boab

On a local radio station, while I was at work - good country-western music in the afternoon - Hank Snow, E. Tubb, Webb Pierce, etc, and later in the evening on the same station some early jazz/blues, Gus Cannon, Meade Lux Lewis. It made up for the fact that I had to work on a holiday.
