AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS
Traditional Spiritual

VERSE:
I've a crown up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!
I've a crown up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!

CHO:
I'm a-goin' to lay down this world,
Goin' to shoulder up my cross,
Goin' to take it home to Jesus,
Ain't that good news!

I've a harp up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!
I've a harp up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!

I've a robe up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!
I've a robe up in the Kingdom,
Ain't that good news!

I've a Saviour in the Kingdom
Ain't that good news!
I've a Saviour in the Kingdom
Ain't that good news! ^^

OK, now I know where Sam Cook got the inspiration for his rocker of the same title. He was, of course, a mighty gospel singer before he became the greatest rock 'n roll/R&B singer of all time.

Armen, do you have the Sam Cook(e) (sp?) lyrics to post? If it is the same title, this would be a good place to add them. If not, it would be great to do a new thread to add them, and post a link here to the new thread.

If you can, please include as much source informationm as possible.

Thanks!

~Susan

Subject: Lyr Add: (AIN'T THAT) GOOD NEWS (Sam Cooke)
From: Armen Tanzerian
Date: 04 Sep 01 - 01:11 AM

Cooke it is. (Shame on me -- he's one of my all-time heroes.)

OK, the words are:

(AIN'T THAT) GOOD NEWS
(S. Cooke)

Oh my baby's comin' home tomorrow
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news
My baby is coming home tomorrow
Ain't that news
Yeah, ain't that news

I got a letter just the other day
Telling me that she was on her way
And she wants me to meet her at the station
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news

In the letter she told me she still loved me
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news
In the letter she told me she loved me
Ain't that news
Yeah, ain't that news

He said she's sorry that she left
Found out she don't want nobody else
She said she wants me all to herself now
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news

Ain't that news
Ain't that good news
Ain't that news
Ain't that news

I said my baby's coming home tomorrow
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news

I'm gonna have her a party at the station
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news
Have a party at the station
Ain't that news
Yeah, ain't that news

And I can't wait to get her home
Where we can finally be alone
Disconnect my telephone now
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news

Ain't that news
Ain't that good news

I said my baby's coming home tomorrow
Ain't that good news
Yeah, ain't that news

Ain't that news
Ain't that good news

If you want to check some other Sam Cooke lyrics, you can click here.

Not only was he the most incredible soul-pop-gospel singer ever, he wrote all of his big hits, including the National Anthem of rock 'n roll, Bring It On Home to Me.

Armen,

This is great. My contention is that there are boodles of blues, R&B, and other songs based on specific spirituals that remained obscure enough that the relationship was not immediately o-bivious.

It is funny because we are doing these in church, and I add new verses all the time, and so I am no more a purist that Sam Cooke. But (I hope) I am also no more of a "folk sinner" than he, and others who have taken these great items and put them to work, to give them new life relevant to today.

Will you check the tune once it's posted and see if it's the same, albeit bloozed-up in interpretation?

~S~

Florence Ballard of the Supremes did a fantastic version of this song on a solo album she recorded but never released. Talk about an unfortunate soul. She had a voice not unlike Areatha's but was always kept in the background on the Supremes' songs so Diana Ross got all the glory.

From: Burke

This request is for someone else. This was from a radio broadcast in the 60's. Does anyone know who it might have been & on what recording? Some of the rhymes don't work, so the words might not be exactly correct.

Deep baritone voice accompanied by banjo and acoustic guitar only.

I'm gonna walk and talk for my freedom -
Ain't a that good news" (Repeat verse)

I'm gonna walk on that line
Been walking for a long long time
I'm gonna walk and talk for my freedom -
Ain't a that good news"

I'm gonna hold my sign up high -
Ain't a that good news? (Repeat verse)

I want my freedom right now
I won't wait until I die
I'm gonna hold my sign up high -
Ain't a that good news?

I'm gonna walk in Mississippi -
Ain't a that good news? (Repeat verse)

From Georgia to Maine
I'm gonna walk in freedom's name
I'm gonna walk in Mississippi -
Ain't a that good news?

I'm gonna beat ol' Jim Crow down now -
Ain't a that Good News? (Repeat
verse)

I'm gonna walk on that line
Been walking for a long long time
I'm gonna beat ol' Jim Crow down now -
Ain't a that Good News?

Could Bernice Johnson-Regan have had anything to do with that 60's version? She was real involved with the music of the movement. I learned this from Sweet Honey in the Rock: absolutely my favorite song to sing, hands down.

Thanks all. I've also learned Smithsonian Folkways has a Bill McAdoo, Pete Seeger recording of I'm Gonna Walk and Talk for My Freedom, on Bill McAdoo Sings with Guitar, Folkways Recordings – 02448, 1960.

Anyone out there know it?
