I love my digital TV box and the folk roots channel it brings me!!!!

Heard on it the other day this song by "The Gumboots" off their CD "A Search for a Passage"...

But that was all the info the guide would give me...

Anybody got the 411 on this?

All I found was the Galaxie play list. Not very helpful either.

Does sound interesting. Does it have a traditional sound or is is more of a folk-rock thing? Here's what the reviewer says on one of the above links:

The opening track, "The Passage Chantey," is an a capella song which tells us what life was like for sailors on early ships. The CD's title track honors the people who searched for the Northwest Passage and reminds us that significant accomplishments are not done without taking risks.

CN... lemme put it this way... I love Stan Rogers "Northwest Passage"... but it's not much of a working song at all... and well, after this many years, I'd be willing to bet that even Stan wouldn't still be singing it...

The Passage Chanty, on the other hand sounded to me like a hairy-chested-men-on-icy-cold-ships kinda song... And well, it's at least new to ME, so I'd love to find it, learn it and sing the hell out of it!!

Note that the link that MMario provided says that "Passage Chanty" and almost all the songs on the CD were composed by members of the band, The Gumboots. Anybody know anything about them, or know them personally?

Clinton - I'm not being judgmental yet, not having heard the song or seen the lyrics, although they probably shouldn't call it a "chantey." I've run across some fine new creations with plenty of spirit by Canadian groups such as Tanglefoot and individuals such as James Keelaghan. I've also plowed through a lot of new dreg. I'm not familar with Gumboots and would be interested to learn more.

It sounded like one to me charley... but I'm not much of a hard case when it comes to that kind of stuff...

my definition if 'folk' is really broad too!!!!

HEY COOL!!!! Ferron is on the Digital channel right now!!!!!

I thought Gumboots was an African group that sing the songs/music & dance of & about the African gold mine/rs & wear those famous (miner's?) boots, that they make so much music with & is so much a part of their dances. Could be mistaken but if they're the same Gumboots I saw on PBS they were beyond being totaly awesome (I hope I'm beginning to sound/talk like the youngster I really am). If anyone has more info please jump in. Barry

Thread creep warning......

An Irish expedition (of whom two, at least, are singers!) has just made it through the Passage in a small boat. Details here
