There is a documentary about gospel music called "Somebody Say 'Amen'!" I think it was in that film that I heard an old gospel song (from about 1930, I think) called "Jesus Dropped The Charges."

Does somebody out there know it?

Well, there's a partial recording here (click). Seems that the song is popular in Germany, among groups that sing English-language gospel songs.

Alta, I seem to recall hearing that song. It started out something like, "I was guilty, guilty as sin ..." or something like that, but that :Jesus dropped the charges and set me free." I hope someone knows it.

This was sung by the O'Neal Twins in the documentary film Say Amen, Somebody. I'm not sure but I think it is their original number. Video and soundtrack CD are available.

That was fun-- Masato, HERE at that site you can hear a blues version of the spiritual, "Wish I'se in Heaven Sittin' Down." Only one verse but a whole different direction from the spiritual as I have seen it-- except the last line. But the tune, altho a little bluesier, is as I recall it. Cool!

It seems the lyrics posted by "GUEST" above are the original or standard lyrics, as sung by The Talley Trio and the O'Neal Twins, not the version/arrangement sung by the Third Exodus - Trinidad group.

The O'Neals' recording (vinyl) was earlier, and you can hear it here:

I'm pretty sure this one is the one I saw and heard in "Say Amen, Somebody."   I definitely prefer it to the others because of its tempo, intensity, and joyful spirit!



One YouTube poster says the song was written my "Mr. Clean" and I think he's referring to Bishop Richard "Mr. Clean" White, but I can't confirm that he wrote the song.

Another source, from the '70s, refers to "the O'Neal Twins' rendition of Prof. Ronnie Felder's gospel classic 'Jesus Dropped the Charges', and it seems Felder's recording did precede Edgar and Edward O'Neal's recording, but it's still not clear whether Felder wrote the song or was simply the first one to get a lot of attention for recording it.
