Does anyone know the lyrics to The Cobbler's Daughter? The version I want is that sung by Kate Rusby. I just can't hear all the words well enough to be sure about them.

That's a lovely song. Hammerite & I sing it unaccompanied - its a lovely swingy one. From memory....
The Cobbler's daughter
I am the cobblers daughter
i'm thought of rude and mean
but a finer and a bonnier lass
you have never seen
I plague me father's head
for my life I wouldn't wed
and me mothers in the prison cause of me.

There was a handsome young man
who used to live by me
if I went out if I went in
he'd always follow me
I know I don't rue the day
but it happened as I say
I took him in my chamber for to see

I took him to my chamber
where we could be alone
and knowing that me mother
and me father were at home
he's kissed me on the cheek
and I screamed til I was weak
me father came a running to the show

He's jumped upon the young man
as I was standing by
he's brought his fist behind his head
and he's thumped him in the eye
me mother heard the din
up the stairs she did begin
with a broom for a weapon she held high

Up jumped the young man
to the stairs straightway
me mother she was standing there
like a raging bull I'd say
She's hit him on the head
and the young man fell like lead
quite dead
upon the floor he lay

I am the cobblers daughter
i'm thought of rude and mean
but a finer and a bonnier lass
you have never seen
I plague me father's head
for my life I wouldn't wed
and me mothers in the prison cause of me.

Kristin

No problem. I think it will require that you read "The Canterbury Tales", after which we could have a common language--no offense meant. The meaning of the song is plain. The understanding of the lyric(s) is also. But not just because we recognize the words in the song, but rather because we recognize them and from that construct a reality of social history and common complaint.

OOPS. I think that Kate Rusby wrote the lyrics, although I could be wrong about that. Anyway, if that helps, I'm glad.
