He probably did say 35 years. Seems to me it was around '65 or '66...maybe even '67, when the show first aired. As for "Next Generation", it was by far the best of the lot, IMO.

Maybe the radio announcer said thirty-five years and I didn't catch it. I'm not much of a Trekkie nut... enjoyed a lot of the "Next Generation" because the reruns were on at 1700h and my ex and I ate supper in front of the tube because she liked it, but never saw much of the others.

By golly, Scabby Doug, that's damn fine point. Wonder what Captain Kirk would do in a crisis situation like this one?

Ermm not wishing to be a parade-rainer, and respecting the Trekness or non-Trekness of all concerned..

Ermm it's a lot longer than 30 years since Start Trek first aired...

It was made in the 60's and even made it to the UK before 1970.

I haven't looked it up yet but I can remember the first series in UK.

Cheers

Steven

Yes, Ralph Glaber probably got his name from another smart-assed monk who was proud of his Latin. I know that I don't have much of a case.

Funk also wrote that trivia came from tri via, three roads, an intersection near Rome where women gathered to talk on the way to market. Couldn't be wrong about that one, could he?

And grammar/glamour being the same word at one time when it was glamorous to know grammar?

While I was looking around in my Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins for that word (without success, I might add), I came across this interesting little bit of information...

goddam. English-speaking people have been quick on the draw with curses since earliest times. So often did the English in medieval times take the Lord's name in vain, for example, that the French called them goddams.

Later, in the American Southeast, Indians gave the Anglos the same name for the same reason. Cape Cod fishermen of Portuguese descent often bestowed nicknames on each other and used the nicknames so consistently that they virtually replaced the surnames of the families concerned after several generations.

One family, for example, became known as the Codfishes, another as the Rats. The most extreme example recorded is the Goddams.

According to Funk's interesting etimologies, the english word came from Glaber the monk's shaved head.

Can't quite see the connection -- lack of hair shirt? Also note that the Latin preceded the monk by a good stretch...

gla•brous (glE2brús) adj. 1. Having no hairs, projections, or pubescence; smooth: a glabrous scalp; glabrous leaves. [ From Latin glaber glabr- bald] gla2brous•ness n.

Ralph Glaber, a monk from Burgundy, who wrote a five-volume history of his times, wrote his history with these questions in mind. He entered his first monastery in 997, scarcely twelve years old, and he seems to have been a character, which set him aside from his fellow monks. In the course of fifty years he was shown the door of six monasteries. On the other hand, not being confined entirely to a monastic life, his wanderings provided him with a wonderful patchwork of perspectives.

In the lead-up to the year one thousand, Glaber gathered reports of a terrifying comet that had crossed the sky:

"It appeared in the month of September, not long after nightfall and remained visible for nearly three months.

"Whether it is a new star, or an increase in the brightness of another star as decided by God no one can tell, but what was established with the greatest degree of certainty is that this phenomenon in the sky never appears to men without being the sure sign of some mysterious and terrible event."

Indeed very soon after, fire consumed the great church of St Michael the Archangel, off the coast of Brittany.

And Glabor continues,

" In the seventh year from the millennium almost all of the cities of Italy and Gaul were devastated by violent conflagrations and Rome itself was largely razed by fire.

The people, en mass, gave out a terrible scream and turned to rush to confess their sins to the Prince of the Apostles."

By the way, the portentous comet of 989 was Haley's comet.

Glaber, in his dreams had met the Devil who appeared at the end of his bed several times. The devil whispered seditious thoughts in an attempt to subvert the holy man.

"Why do monks bother with vigils, fasts and mortifications?

"One day, one hour of repentance, is all you need to earn eternal bliss – so why bother to rise at the sound of the bell when you could go on sleeping?

These words were uttered 1000 years ago to a monk, but are they not familiar to us today? How often do we hear the words,

"I don't need to go to church.

"I don't need to be forever vigilant and on my best behaviour.

"I've repented of my sins, I've a clean slate."

Carol - I agree. Patrick Stewart was the ultimate starship captain. So totally classy as to be in a class by himself, in fact.

But...he doesn't...(meaningful look)...talk like...(meaningful gesture)...this! Does he...Bones?

I would like to point out, yet once again, that the most glabrous of Star Trek captains, Patrick Stewart (aka Capt. Picard), is/was a very sexy man. I actually think he's sexier bald than he would be with hair.

I agree. The amount of hair one has or doesn't have is not something to be 'cured'.

Woof.

Interesting point, Sophocleese. Had S**tner played the lead role in Doctor Who it would have had profound effects on the whole field of British acting, I'm sure. Effects that would still resonate today.

They...would have...started talking like...this!

Wow. The mind boggles.

See Little Hawk I tend to think that Dr. Who was pretty damn imaginative. However I only got to watch that on sporadic visits to cousins in England. Dr. Who did suffer from a lack of William Shatner in the lead role, though.

gnu - I am not a "Trekkie nut", I'm just a shit disturber with a warped sense of humour. I do, however, admit to a certain fondness for Star Trek. The original show was far more imaginative than its competition...for the 60's...and the Next Generation edition was a superb show which presented the only truly just and sensible social order I've ever seen presented on North American television...

No money, full employment, equality of opportunity, free education at all levels, no commercial advertising, no friggin' political parties (but elected officials, yes!), an equal standard of living for all federation citizens (and a good one!), free medical care for all, no life insurance cos who needs it in a system like that...

Boy, talk about subversive! McCarthy would have had those screenwriters up in front of Congress right fast!

Resistance is NOT futile, they just like you to think it is.

I figured Little Hawk or some other Trekkie nut would bring this up. I'm not a Trekkie fanatic, although I did watch a lot of "The Next Generation" because it was on at suppertime and my ex was an "enthusiast". Guess I figured that with all the threads about whatshisname lately, there would be one about this, which I heard on the radio today.

Thirty years ago today, the first episode of Star Trek was aired.
