Subject: Coming Home To Ireland???
From: GUEST,Arjay
Date: 10 Sep 01 - 04:20 AM

I recently heard a very pretty song about someone of Irish ancestry who visited Ireland for the first time and felt like she/he was coming home.

I don't know the title and am not positive of the hook line, but that's the idea. I looked in DT and forum under several cominations of those words. No luck.

Does someone know it?

I found this, but I don't think it's what you are looking for. Can you get any phrases at all?

Would this be the song you wanted? (A friend just emailed me that you had posted this request)

               Home To Ireland

I went over to Ireland to just say hello
To honor ancestors who left long ago
But when I saw the green hills and the mist rolling slow
I knew that my heart had come home

CHORUS:I've come home to Ireland from 200 years
To people with faces like looking in mirrors
We sang some old songs, and we cried some old tears
And I knew that my heart had come home.

I wandered the lands my ancestors had known
Killarney, Kilkenny, Tralee and Tyrone
And wherever I'd go, 'twas "come in and sit down"
And I knew that my heart had come home
(chorus)

From the north to the south, they told one wish to me
Peace for all Ireland, united and free
For a land with no borders except for the sea
A land with one heart and one home.
(chorus)

Cathy

Absolutely wonderful!

Your lyric absolutley expresses how I felt after my first visit to Ireland in '98.

Is there a melody to go with it? If there is a melody, but no readily available sound file, can you post the key/chords used?

Thanks so much!

Yes there is a melody - I am not sure how to go about making a sound file - if I can find out, I will make one and post(?) it here. I do hope to have a CD out by late spring and the song will be on it, so stay in touch. I'm glad you liked the song - it is an amazing feeling, isn't it, to go to a faraway country that feels so much like home... -Cathy

Cathy, your song is beautiful (both lyrics and melody) and you sing it wonderfully, too. If you haven't submitted it for inclusion in the Mudcat Songbook, I wish you would.
I'm also eager to hear your CD.

Most of this is already in the Digital Tradition, and in Cathy's post above. But for the sake of completeness:

Here's a song my friend Cathy Ross wrote after her first trip to her ancestral home in Ireland. It is on her recent self-released CD "Times of Summer Sun". You can email her about purchasing a copy.

Fred Maslan sang Cathy's "Come to the Dance" today. Lovely song.
