I'm just above the U.S. border, here in Toronto. All the TV, all the radio, all our thoughts and prayers are with you, our friends so close. So far as I know, Canada is taking flights for landing. One of my Mudcat friends here told me that his workplace here in Toronto has shut down and the board is having an emergency meeting. We wonder what our children in school know yet. Many here have friends and relatives in the attacked zones.

Osama Bin Laden announced three weeks ago that his people would launch an unprecedented attack against the United States. The rationale was retribution for the US' support of Israel.

This certainly qualifies.

It also answers Mick's question about what could drive people to so desperate a measure.

Our whole team has been told they may go home from the research base where i work if they are uncomfortable there; although I wasn't particularly uncomfortable, my BBW's concerns prevailed.

I am sorry to say that I believe an act of war, and a second day of infamy, is with us this morning. The body count may well match Pearl Harbor's, I have heard.

I cannot imagine what the scenario Bin laden's plannersa could have had in mind would be in terms of benefit to their people or their concerns. If this analysis of the source of these attacks is concerned, Bin laden himself will be buried in a bunker before a year is out. His people will not benefit and may in fact support grievous harm because of his psychotic and juvenile actions.

I am clearly making assumptions here, with very skimpy real data. It is a possible interpretation only.

Stay well, friends, stay brave, and for god's sake stay awake and rational. Striking blindly will be worse than not striking at all. This may be war, or it may not be; it is not chaos.

Re mobile phones : Apparantly there is a facility whereby the networks can be closed down (closing any existing connections) and then re-opened to specified user groups only. Emergency workers, govt officials etc have priority user groups - and will be able to make and recieve calls (ordinary bods are something like group 6). This is probably what you mean.
As to UK : As far as I can make out all airports have been closed until further notice, Canary Wharf, the City square mile and Houses of Parliament &tc are being evacuated. All planes which left Britain & were able to turn back have been turned back & will return to Britain.
Apparantly there are still two planes lost & out of contact from United Airlines - but obviously everything is very confused & that may be a reference to planes already down.
Feeling terrible for everyone - especially our NY catters.

Red Cross has activated its Aviation Incident Response (AIR) Team to respond in New York City, and trained disaster workers from the American Red Cross of Greater New York and the National Capitol Chapter in Washington, D.C. are providing relief in the affected areas.

80,000 blood donations in the American Red Cross blood inventory are ready to ship to affected areas and will ensure that patients' lives are saved. Donors who wish to give blood in the coming days to replenish the nation's blood supply are encouraged to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to make an appointment.

In the wake of these traumatic events lies a wide path of catastrophic physical and psychological destruction in which countless victims will require assistance. In addition to meeting the physical needs of the affected regions, the American Red Cross will be providing crisis mental health counseling.

The Red Cross AIR Team has been activated and is responding in New York City and Boston, where one of the flights that struck the World Trade Center originated. Made up of leadership teams from all Red Cross disaster relief functions, the AIR Team responds when activated through the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act of 1996. This act charged the National Transportation Safety Board with designating an organization to provide for the emotional needs of victims, family members and rescue workers. NTSB selected the American Red Cross because of our nationally recognized mental health counseling program.

ARC blood collection services are generally separate from disaster response at the larger metro areas and wherever there is a Red Cross blood collection facility. Local chapters may or may not be involved in disaster work and may or may not be able to deal with inquiries about donating blood. The number to call is 1-800-GIVE LIFE, to find out where to donate near you.

United Airlines just confirmed that one of the planes was a Boeing of theirs; they also have another big one missing.

'Catters in the UK and Europe, are your governments closing air traffic, too? Concerned for anyone in a Western country.

I'm at work at a government contractor just outside the Beltway. Everyone here is in absolute shock. Listening to radios, trying to find information on the net, talking about friends and relatives in NY and the Pentagon. From the window I can see what may be smoke from the Pentagon. Some local schools are shutting early. The federal government is shutting down.

This is just awful. Universities are announcing closings as well.

Large airliner – perhaps a 747 – crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The report said the location was 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, PA.

Sears Tower in Chicago evacuated. Military bases in Alaska on alert.

I'm extremely angry that so many terrorists could have gotten onto planes today and taken them over. So much for airport security.

Big Mick I understand the conflict. Its difficult outside your country to say that I want to know why without sounding callous. I'm not callous, I'm shocked and crying for all the people hurt in this, but I still want to know WHY to try and prevent any further disater.

I guess this may give Bush a chance to show what kind of leadership he and his advisors are capable of. Congratulations to the airports for closing down as quickly as they did to stop possible other suicide flights.

757 reported crashed in South Eastern Pensylvania.
Not sure whether this is a targetted crash - or whether this is the one that was on the way to Washington.
