Jim, I am one of a small number of people who left Mudcat (publicly) and then came back. If you want to talk, my e-mail is in the Member Phot & Info section.

Please, everyone, don't judge this person or anyone else who says this sort of thing. It does not help them or Mudcat or yourself to do it, and it makes it harder all the way around.

Gnu, Clinton Hammond, M Ted: I'm disgusted and ashamed all of you. I just went back and read some of Jim Cheydi's previous posts, and I see that they were mostly to music threads, ALWAYS to non-political threads, and ALWAYS completely polite and inoffensive. There was no reason to treat him with abuse.

I don't know what offended him. Maybe he's been lurking in some of the troll threads. Maybe YOU THREE have been indulging in flinging insults for so long that it now seems normal to you. It is not. I suggest you go lurk in some music threads for a while until you remember what Mudcat is supposed to be about.

Jim, if you're still lurking, let me say this; I think that there *is* a fair amount of nastyness to be had anywhere on the internet. I'd tell you to e-mail me, and we could trade war stories, but I don't post my e-mail for this very reason (things can be nasty here in cyberland, and I don't want it in my in box).

All I can tell you is that it is atypical here (in my admittedly limited experience), but that crud does happen. Keep in mind too that things are far and away off from "normal" for most considering the events of Tuesday.

Jim, these are hard times for many here and considering the emotions that are running round here at the moment (which can not have been helped by the trolls - they sink even further in my estimation) and the need of people to express their views and feelings, I think things have been pretty good over the past few days.

I know this appears to conflict with your view but I do feel the current circumstances need to be considered and allowances made.

Emotions ARE running high, and I believe there are a few opportunists who aren't the least bit concerned about the events but are using the forum for self gratification - perhaps to prove they exist to the world.

I find it curious that all the reports from NYC that I've seen seem to show people working together in compassion. This is not to say they're not angry - just that they're not angry at each other.

Why are we?

I think that, given the fact that this is an open access forum, the level of tolerance and coherence, even when we disagree sharply, is impressive. Not perfect, but better than I would have dreamed possible.

And that is in spite of the energetic efforts of a handful of people who even in a time like this have tried to use the GUEST facility to cause discord.

In circumstances like those of this week it was inevitable that people have stepped over the line and said foolish things at times, and have gone off half cocked at things other people have said, or that they have thought they have said. But if we could have this level of discussion in the outside world, we'd be a lot better off than we are.

I'm not exactly "fed up" but I am emotionally exhausted and tired of the war-mongering, hate mongering, trolling and flaming. Not only here on Mudcat, but also in the media.

I have heard all the news reports and recieved all the e mails I want on the subject for a few days-- I need space to think and I can't do that when the subject is worn out until we have hard news. I am tired of hash and re-hash just for something to say.

I am tired of being emotionally and visually assaulted by something I have done everything I can do about. If you don't hear much from me for a few days, go look in the Lyr Req threads. That is where I will be. Not in any of these others.

I've gotten fed up with Mudcat a few times too, and I just quietly go away for awhile and concentrate on something else when that happens. If and when I feel like coming back, I come back.

I've done that with restaurants, jobs, friends and acquaintances, and a bunch of other things too.

It doesn't necessarily mean that anything's been lost, but more that it has just reached its natural conclusion...or is taking a needed break.

That's life.

UB Ed, John in Hull: Let's give Mr. Cheydi some credit. "Nostradamus ate my hamster" was HIS line. A while ago, people were saying "good riddance" to him, and now you're stealing his lines!

Murray MacLeod: I didn't get the Grant Baynham reference, but it appears that Jim Cheydi at least had a sense of humor. All the more reason it's a shame people are abusing him.

Jon Freeman: I'm not sure if you were addressing me or Jim Cheydi, but "emotions running high" are no excuse for attacking an innocent bystander.

Sinsull: "These threads are the only place some us have to vent." OK, if you people who are of like minds want to vent your feelings on each other, be my guest, but I still am offended when people vent them on innocent bystanders.

Jim, like you I read some of Jim Cheydi's posts and like you I noted he's been around since June or so. I found him on several threads before and he always seemed fine, but I never care for these "announcements" and what Hawk said is preferable....and easier to deal with when the member often returns for both the member and the rest of us.

Jim Cheydi has posted on other than music threads and as he has been around for awhile, I wouldn't consider him an "innocent bystander." If you get nailed on a non-music thread, you get nailed.......me, you, Sinsull, Jim Cheydi. Better not to play than to be easily offended........and for all that, I can't find exactly what it was that offended him.

Subject: RE: Fed up
From: English Jon

I'm Jim's Cousin. Maybe I can shed some light.

Things that piss him off include those people (you know who you are) who continually blame England/the English for all the evils of the world, this is most prominent in I.R.A. related threads, mainly, it would appear by Irish Wannabes - people who have little or no Irish blood, yet romanticise the cause of Irish independance.

He is NOT a supporter of the British Government. He is NOT racist in any way. He is however, like myself, a strong believer in the validity of English culture and doesn't like to see Englishness continually decried.

For example, jingoistic little comments like all the business about how the "americans are the only nation in the world to build aircraft" (from that canadian article someone posted) would probably piss him off a bit. Particularly when you consider that boeing use rolls royce engines, the american military still uses harrier jets, concorde is still the fastest civillian plane etc.

B.T.W. He is a consumate musician, has an I.Q. of 160 and a highly developed sense of humour. He's also the sort of bloke who would give you his last penny.

But anyway, he's probably mostly pissed off with all the threads calling for DEATH TO THE RAGHEADS etc... yes it is an emotional time for all of us, but that doesn't make it alright to be a biggot. The I.R.A. blew a big hole in Ealing, London a couple of months ago. Jim and I both lived there for a while. Didn't even warrant a mention on the 'cat. Imagine if I'd posted "Irish bastards blew up my home" - there would be outrage, and rightly so: the actions of a small number of extremists is not representative of the wishes of the nation. Anyway, our gran is London Irish and I know it wasn't her.

I'm afraid there is a fair amount of nastiness on Mudcat. Again, it's a small number of contributors with outspoken and vindictive prejudices that spoil it for everyone else.

And I think that's why he's left.

Sorry about that. EJ

Jim Dixon, the hamster line was actually Jim's last post before "blowing" the forum. I went looking out of concern for what might have pissed him off and, was a bit perplexed by the results of my search. Thank you English Jon for the clarity.

That being said, I'm sorry to see anyone leave, and I'm sorry that folks let others upset them. What I don't understand is the need to "loudly" leave. Strikes me as akin to a temper tantrum...

Yeah, if I ever got so fed up I wanted to leave Mudcat permanently, I probably wouldn't tell anybody; I'd just disappear and probably no one would notice. But I wonder how many people have left that way? And I wonder whether the old-timers have noticed the cumulative effect of lots of people leaving?

I do a lot of browsing in old threads, sometimes 4 years or more, looking for lyrics that haven't been harvested for DigiTrad (there are hundreds) and I keep seeing names of people who used to be quite active, posting lots of lyrics, who apparently aren't active any more.

Oh, well, whatever will happen, will happen, I guess...

I'm GUESSING (& it is pure guesswork, cos I dont know Jim at all) that maybe he left 'noisily' to give people who he maybe thought were aware that they had offended him the chance to 'apologise' or whatever. If that was the case, well, its a shame that he got the comments he did.

Now I dont know what upset Jim (so I dont have any inkling as to WHO he has fallen out with, if anyone in particular) so I'm NOT pointing fingers (& havent been here long enough to be so 'presumptious' as to do so anyway) but with the exception of those strange people who come on here with the intention of annoying us, I would have thought we were all friends, accepting of each other.

Ok, we cant ALL get on with EVERYONE, ALL of the time...to expect that would be flying in the face of human nature. Maybe something has been said in the heat of the moment...ALL of us have been overwrought in the past few days....some understandably moreso than others (I'd guess that over THIS side of the Pond only those who have been unfortunate enough to lose someone feel quite as bad as do the American people) We share your grief, of course, that goes without saying....but we cant plumb the depths of it.

Well..this has wandered well away from whatever point I was trying to make...sorry....I think I'll just leave it there

I don't get why people here are so pessimistic. "You can't get along with everyone" etc. Well, among my friends, co-workers, neighbors, relatives, my wife's co-workers, etc., it appears to me that everyone gets along pretty well. Mudcat is really unique in my experience for the amount of hostility and friction that occurs.

Mind you, I'm only talking about the ones who hang out in the non-music threads. The people over in the music threads seem pretty civilized.

Heck, I go away all the time (in fact I'm not here right now!).

If you're here 24/7, I'd be amazed if you DIDN'T get pissed at times.

I'd much prefer actual discussions and opinions based on personal knowledge of reasonably obscure 'folk type' music. There was quite a bit of that when I first got here and I really enjoyed it, but times change, and if a group welcomes newcomers, it gets bigger and more general.

Now the vast majority of info comes almost instantly from folks who are expert at culling things from the net. Not as much fun, but it sure reflects the kindness and willingness to help of the 'info gatherers'. If there are no interesting discussions going on about something that I can relate to or contribute to, I just bugger off and spend my 'net time' at some Shakespeare or Jazz or Leather carving sites. (if I find a 'naked folksinger' site, I might be away longer)!

The "way" a person leaves just seems to me to reflect whether they have a 'laid back' or intense personality. This place is totally addictive! Once you've invested in it, staying out must be nigh unto impossible. It's simply too much fun! I can think of at least four people who went out with great wailing and gnashing of teeth, but were back before you could say Jack Robinson. Sometimes they use different names, but the bottom line is that "The Mudcat 'pull' is mighty strong".

Bottom line is nobody gets on anybody's case when they come back, so my money is on Jim to grab his dead hamster and return. Besides if it's just 'idiots' who've ticked him off, all he needs is a bit more time here. He'll find that there are fewer complete prats on the Cat than in most pubs on a Saturday night.

Rick

John in Hull. Next time try "dogpile.com".

There was a minor crisis when, several days ago, poor George had to pull out of the concert due to family problems and I was left with no guitarist. There are times when I wish I played guitar, and this was one of them! The day was saved by the wonderful Grant Baynham, one-time songsmith on BBC-TV's

"That's Life", and one of the country's most gifted guitarists and original performers, who stepped into the breech only days before the event and did an absolutely terrific job

THANKS, GRANT!

I figured since I was such a smartass, I'd better answer the question myself. "dogpile" and "beaucoup" are two very useful search tools. Skeptic told me about them.
It doesn't make up for some of the other things he's done but it helps.

I never get fed up with any of you guys, even when some of you are really awful. Everybody gets mad sometimes, and this is really a safer place to express it than in the pub on Saturday night. It's really hard to punch somebody out over the internet, and it all goes away again eventually.

Jim Cheydi is apparantly `fed up' because England cops an occasional serve from (inter alia)some IRA sympathisers in various `IRA-related' threads. Now he has left the Mudcat, `slamming the door'(figuratively) as he goes. Jim should perhaps talk to his London-Irish granny and ask her about the stereotyping of, and discrimination against the Irish in the past in London or elsewhere in the UK. They had to 'cop it sweet' or leave too. Jim will just have to accept it; in the wider world the `unmixed blessing' that England's empire was for other people has yet to be fully appreciated. BTW most so-called IRA threads seem to me to have started from innocent requests for song lyrics which end up being `flamed' or `trolled'.

I ought to say something, I suppose, since I made a nasty remark--I think it was a juvenile post, on the level with throwing a tantrum--the dramatic exits are just that, cheap theater student stunts, and they deserve whatever they elicit from the peanut gallery--

Speaking of members going away, has anyway heard from Áine? I sent a PM about a week or maybe more, and she hasn't responded. Is she alright? Is she pissed at us? She's someone I would hate to see leave this forum.

I am always sorry to hear that someone has become disappointed with Mudcat because it really is a tremendous resource. The sophmoric manipulation by an anonymous poster has succeeded in infecting the body of discussion here but, when we log off Mudcat, we can go on with our lives, On or off mudcat, the anonymous one has to live with himself. You can imagine how much fun his life is if this is what he needs to spend hours doing. Consider. He has to read a lot of postings, compose answers, monitor the responses, invent new characters, refressh discussions that are sinking towards the bottom. In order to spend this amount of time, he has to have rather little going on in his life to make the investment of his time seem worthwhile. He will probably insist that he lives a busy, fulfilling life. Actually, I think he did a while back on one thread or other but given the amount of energy he puts into this, his claim rings a little hollow to my ears.

While I am on the topic, I think you can get a clearer idea of what he gets out of this if you go back ofver his posts from a while back, far enough back that I was stil reading threads over which he ahd taken control. He was exulting in how easy it was to get people fired up and that it was almost boringly predictable. Of course, if it was so boringly predictable, why would he continue? Perhaps, because he has other little opportunity to gain attention and he hungers for recognition that supports his view of himself as being superior to most people. However, he seems to have trouble in his life convincing people to share his view of himself.

I find that I am spending less time at Mudcat now but I expect that will change. I don't add anything to referesh Anonymous Poster threads whether he, the anonymopus one, stumbles onto a valid point or not. Discussing his points, reacting to his arguments which are offered only to confront and annoy only increases his emotional dividend in return for investment of his time.

My suggestion is, don't leave, just cut back on the time ou spend here and until the divisiveness caused by the anonymous troll subsides. He will eventually go away. He is a bit like a weed that thrives when watered with attention and he does bear bitter fruit.

IMHO

Sourdough

"FED-UP"???

Isn't that a result of a merger between Federal Express and UPS??

Grant Baynham is a cabaret act - so is anyone who gets paid for performing folk music or any other kind of music to an audience. But he's a very good cabaret act, and he has written some very pertinent political songs too. He also loves the music and will spend most festivals at which he's booked playimg in the bar for fun. As a fairly new Catter I wonder why people waste so much time slagging off people they have never met and don't know.
