Last night, I met with Mary Courtney, actually she invited me up to sing my song about the NYC firemen at her gig. We discussed setting up the NYC committee to pull this off. So we are building this with deliberate speed. Do let's all check in on this every once and awhile. Also did a public access TV gig with our Mudcat friends Steve and 2 in Harmony, spoke to each other breafly about the April gig. Cheers all, keep it moving foreward. Larry

Haven't seen any new activity on this thread for a while, and I was wondering: apart from the date and place(s) side of the organization, has anyone found out any information on the donations side? Is there some central place to which money for non-American victims can be sent?

Here's a thought:

For those who are not in a position to travel, and / or do not have internet access to participate virtually, but would still like to lend their support:

How about printing up a charity songbook, after the event?

The way I'm envisioning it, it would include all the songs that were performed in all three of the concerts. We could make copies available through the Mudcat Store, and the performers who were *at* the concerts could have copies to sell at other venues, along with their tapes and CD's....

Just a thought...

I know *I'd* buy a copy!!

Ann

One small typo that needs to be corrected:

"Our will our ranks be open wide to all who'd risk our fate?" should be "Or will our ranks be open wide to all who'd risk our fate?"

I need to remind myself that spellcheck is a poor substitute for proofreading.

Steve, I changed "our" to "or in a couple of places. --JoeClone

I have heard it said that the first casualty of war is the truth.

---- Steve

"The New Battle Hymn of the Republic"

Music: "John Brown's Body" ("The Battle Hymn of the Republic")
Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 2001

Stanzas only, low and dirgelike, without choruses.

An evil hand of terror has smitten our land,
Cruel war is thrust upon us, and united we shall stand,
But before we loose the dogs of war, the truth we shall demand.
May the truth go shining on!

Are our weapons so intelligent, are our bombs so smart,
The evil and the innocent our bombs can tell apart?
Or together will they perish once the bombings start?
May the truth go shining on!

And if we march to battle in the Good Lord's Holy Name,
How are we so different from the ones we choose to blame?
War is never holy; it is evil and profane.
May the truth go shining on!

And the ones whose souls are guided by the sacred Inner Light,
Shall we brand them all as traitors because they will not fight?
Shall we lock them into prisons and keep them out of sight?
May the truth go shining on!

And the one we call Bin Laden, oh may the truth be known,
We armed him and we trained him when we claimed him as our own;
Now he bites the hand that fed him, we have reaped what we have sown.
May the truth go shining on!

Will we who fight for freedom ourselves succumb to hate?
Or will our ranks be open wide to all who'd risk our fate?
The hand that smote our nation knew neither gay nor straight.
May the truth go shining on!

And when the battle's over, will those who now protect,
Be treated then with decency, with honor and respect?
Or will they suffer homelessness, depression and neglect?
May the truth go shining on!

Yes, although war is evil, we still may choose to fight,
The lesser of two evils may bring us through this night,
But let us not deceive ourselves that two wrongs make a right.
May the truth go shining on!

OK - venue enquiries underway. Local, to me, April is the start of the Commonwealth festival. Manchester is hosting the Commonwealth games in August 2002 so we may get some support in that quarter as well. Keep your fingers crossed.

EVERYONE put 27 April 2002 in your diary. HUGE benefit concerts in NYC, Washington DC and the UK. Link up when timezones allow. Anyone else wanna join us?

Thanks Steve for bringing up NEFFA, I was about to. A very large group of New Englanders & New Yorkers either preform (I do) or attend this festival. It's a long standing festival & many make a comment year after year to be there. Is another date a possiblity? If so, put Finn & Haddie on the list if you want. Barry

Sorry, Suffet, don't want to alienate any NE folkies! Like I said earlier we cannot please everyone. If we choose another weekend it is likely to co-incide with the (insert your own town) folk festival. I am happy with the 27th as well but how do I know does it clash with someone else? If so, which do we avoid? Etc, etc.

Is the 27th now favourite? Can we close on that one? I feel a decision comimng on...;-)

Cheers

Subject: Conflict with NEFFA
From: Suffet
Date: 16 Sep 01 - 05:11 PM

Yipes! Please excuse my stupidity in checking only NY and NJ for major conflicts. Had I looked at Massachusetts, I would have noticed that April 20 falls right in the middle of the three-day New England Folk Festival (NEFFA '02, April 19-21).

While NEFFA '02 is taking place more than 100 miles from New York, many people from the New York folk scene will be there, including both our potential audience and our potential performers. I suggest that we seriously take this into consideration before fixing the date.

Is there anything we can also do meantime? Perhaps later in the year especially for the children, Christmas, a holiday in the UK, stay with a family in the UK. I don't know, but We'd take a kid and give them a good time for a while to help them out of this mess.

Er, go back and read what I wrote..... a broad band of folk music from other lands.... If I could do the coloured highlight thing on folk I would. Musical diversity is not the issue here, ethnic diversity is. Many people forget that other lands have folk music too, that has just as much history and tradition as anything from Childe Ballads or the Dancing Master.

Can you invite a Sword Dancing side from, say, East London, so's I can get an excuse to come over with Manitas??

From: Suffet

Greetings from New York,

April 20 looks OK. I don't see any conflict with another major event.

We should be very careful in how we deal with to the issue Liz raises. At the risk of sounding totally off base, when it comes to producing a concert, sometimes a great deal of musical diversity is counterproductive. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

For example, a little over a year ago I helped produce a fund raising concert for the first Ships to Save the Waters Conference. Our three headliners were Paul Winter, David Amran, and Pete Seeger, any one of whom could have filled the 1,200 seat house. In the end we drew a paying audience of fewer than 500 and we cleared less than $1,000. The problem was that many people who would have come to hear one were at best only mildly interested in the others.

I should note that the concert was musically wonderful. In addition, it gave some of the non-headline acts, such as the Johnson Girls, good exposure. But overall, it was a show buisness flop. It would have been easier to have asked Pete to hit up a few contributors.

My own suggestion in striking a balance between musical diversity and keeping a strong audience base is that we follow the lead of the Sis Cunningham tribute concert held here in New York in 1997. The organizers managed to put on somewhere around 30 performers, with lots of diversity in regard to age, ethnicity, and even musical style, but all of whom drew from a "folkie" base.

By the way, having a "folkie" event doesn't preclude encouraging and helping other musicians who may want to put on concerts which draw on their own audience base. And I speak as a person who got a punk rock band, Viva Fidel, onto a Woody Guthrie tribute, and a rap group, the Disciples of Hip Hop, onto a Sloop Clearwater concert. In each case it was a mixed success, but I wouldn't try to place too many folkies onto the bill of a punk or a rap concert.

Let's discuss this further.

--- Steve

April 20 sounds good to me... Liz, Happy birthday! Of course there will be music of many lands, in my own band, we have Kamala Shankaram, who plays the sitar, and we are calling up folkies from all over, and NO such concert here would be anything without Rev. Matt Jones, a voice of the civil rights movement in the sixties and seventies... Well, best to all, pray for peace. Larry

OK transatlanic folkies! Any reason we cannot put the date thing to bed and go for April 20? Unless Larry cannot do that one I don't see any reason, from my point of view, why not. As I said before I know we will never please everyone but someone has to get the ball rolling or we will never get anywhere. Unless we get any strong reasons against by, say, end of day, New York Time, tomorrow (Mon 17 Sept) I suggest we go for it. I will start researching venues Tuesday.

OK?

What do we call it BTW? Something 'snappy'? How about taking a leaf out of Bill Sables book and using, with his permission of course, something like 'Bridging the Gap'? Or something more relevant to Mudcat and the help we are trying to raise? Folk for Peace? Any ideas?

Cheers

I agree with Larry about June being too late. If May 11 is bad because of Mothers day how about either May 18, April 20 or April 27? Remember we can never please everyone. We need a consensus any strong feelings about either date? My vote goes to the earliest but I will fit in with whatever the NYC catters think best.

Remember that the 2nd Sunday in May is the U.S.'s Mother's Day and a lot of people will travel to be with their families that weekend. That weekend has also become the time that M.A.D.D. organizes gun-legislation demonstrations, so there's a lot of rallying going on then for that cause. I would suggest considering another weekend if the concert is to be in the U.S.

I might like to go and play if I can carpool with some of the Mudcat HQ contingent (I hate to go into the city alone even under normal circumstances). Marymac? Max? Pene?

Great Idea, DC, and England... and anywhere all at the same time, I do think June is a bit late into the summer season, but lets get a consensus. Cheers, Larry

Mrrzy, don't worry about flying. By the time you CAN fly anywhere, security will be so tight you probably wouldn't be able to get a toothpick on board.

Sounds like a great idea, guys.

I know my band would do this, so a tentative COUNT ME IN FOR A DC SHOW from this quarter. Are there any other DC catters willing to put in for something locally? Considering DC is the site of the second attack, I think it fitting that we try. If enough of us here are up to it, I will speak with my group, and see if we can't do the organizing for it.

I would be happy to come out of the closet and admit to my identity in order to make a contribution to this cause.

Larry's post arrived as I was typing up my last message. May is certainly good for me if you feel it is the best time for you, Larry. If we make it a Saturday Afternoon / Evening event we could certainly meet over the airwaves at some point as well. May 4? Bank Hol in the UK on the 6th as well (I think! The late May bank hol has been moved to the first weekend of June apparantly so I'm a bit confused.) 11th may be better considering it will be the Anniverary (8 months exactly) Only slight problem is artists tend to become less available as the festival season starts. Any thoughts?

Dave

I think you are right, Kevin and thanks to you for the support as well, but I think it best to solicit the views of Larry and anyone else closer to the disaster first. After all it will be primarily their day. I am happy to support but not take the lead on this one.

Hope no-one did take offence at mentioning these things. There was none intended.

Cheers

Dave

It would be really wonderful if this could also take place in cyberspace, either via linking up to Mudcat Radio OR in a specially set up PalTalk room, so those of us who cannot be there, physically, could listen in OR contribute some music, too.

Excellent idea.

In Peace,

kat

Well, I think we should plan to make it big, and May is such a joyous month, with the coming of spring... May 1st, is taken, but, some time in May sounds right to me, as we would also have to do a bit of reasearch about visitors who were lost. How does May sound to folks? Larry

Never too early to think of reconciliation. There'll have been plenty of Muslim victims in the Towers.

In the memorial service in St Pauls in London today Muslim community leaders and clerics were there alongside Christian and Jewish ones.

Mrs Gnome had good idea, bless her romantic soul:-) - Valentines Day. The day of love. Sounds good to me. Any other suggestions?

I was thinking of Al Hijra / St Pats being a good idea btw, Ann. But I'm not sure if everyone will be in agreement so it may not be a good idea after all. Thanks for supporting it and being so understanding though. If there were more like minded people we would not have to have this conversation!

Luv an peas to all.

Dave the Gnome --

I wouldn't worry about a February concert being "too close" to Al Hijra. Personally, my heart aches the most for the Middle Eastern and Arabic victims of this crime. They've been attacked, too, remember (I heard one statistic that said that there were 12,000 Pakistani citizens, guests of this nation, who were working at the World Trade Center on the day of the attack -- not to mention the *American citizens* who emigrated here from the Middle East). But many don't feel free to join the public grieving because they fear being attacked. Masques and Arab language newspapers have been attacked and threatened by some of their fellow Americans seeking revenge.

If this is going to be a concert for rememberance and peace, then maybe holding around Al Hijra would be a good idea -- remind people that no religion or race has a monopoly on hatred -- or on love.

Thoughts of comfort and healing to all.

Ann

OK - Lets talk dates then. Before this Christmas is probably out. Mid January would be good as everyone needs cheering up after the excesses of the season! Feb. 5th (My birthday:-)) March - St Patricks day? I understand it to be a big celebration amongst the NY Irish anyway. (It's also Islamic New year (Al Hijra) on the 15th. Too early for talk of reconcilliation yet but by then who knows?)

Lets try to fix a date by this time next week so we can get the ball rolling. Worry about who can come and where the money goes later.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

DtG

I like the idea of international concert day for this, I suppose here in New York we can contact all the national consulates in NY for a list of families in a few months when things are sorted out. Lets make a lovely sound in the name of peace. Cheers Larry

They think that the UK proportion of deaths will be in the hundreds - perhaps we could achieve a transatlantic concert - a bit like live aid without Bob Geldoff ;-) Or am I getting too ambitious? I would be happy to try and co-ordinate something here. I guess there would be plenty other volunteers as well.

Just a thought

I have been thinking about who has the least support among the casualties, and though our first thanks must go to the Firefolks and Cops, they have a very good support structure, and we can go right over and thank them in easily with coffee cakes, etc. However, the tourests, and guests of our nation, who died, they may go overlooked by relief. Lets put together a folk concert in a few months, for the benifit of the families of guests of the nation who lost family in this terrible, event, what about it all??? Larry
