I've adopted this from a column by my brother, Richard---a friend sent it to him

We need it now. For those of us here, still. Put this with all those other bright laws. This makes an interesting paradox for Murphy's negativity.

When anything can go right, it will---and at the best possible moment.

Art Thieme

Just listened to The Last Night of the Proms on TV.

An American conductor! Beethoven's Ninth symphony and didn't it rock!

Things certainly went right at that moment.......

Murphy's negativity

I always considered Murphy an optimist!!

I'd go for a compromise - when anything can go right it will - just when you want it to go wrong.

Fortunately it doesn't always work that way.

Example going up to Blackpool for the Fylde Folk Festival a couple of weeks ago the Virgin Rail train pulled in to Preston 20 minutes late. (As they tend to now the system has been broken up and flogged off to incompetents with money.)

Which meant that I had missed my connection and would have to wait for hours. Except that when I got to the patform I found that the connection was late as well, and I just caught it.

Art, I've never seen that principle expressed as a law before although I've relied heavily upon it throughout my life. After following up on your reference, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Islands In The Clickstream. The many archived columns on Richard's Web site are a wonderful guidebook for examining ourselves and our thoughts. Richard seems to be as interesting and insightful as his older brother.

Thanks,

      - Mark

"Wrong" just seems to happen. "Right" takes work.

I don't know about Richard, Mark. "Money is the dye in the arteries of our souls." Eh??? "The Net is an imaginary garden with real toads in it." I lile that one better.

I like Art's Law - it has a nice, positive Thieme. I wonder if things sometimes go right just because you believe they will...

I love it, Art! And, thanks Mark for the link. I noticed that acerbic wit, that Twist of Thieme, must be in the genes. Great website, Art, and looks like a pretty neat person to claim as a little bro!

I think they can, Jeri. I try to think that way, but always with the caveat of "this or something better for the highest good of all concerned." THEN, if something seems to go wrong, i.e. a car breaks down or something, I try to remember that it has to be for the best. Who knows, if I had my way and it had started, I might have experienced something much worse like an accident or something.*bg*

Daaaa-da-dum-da-da-da-da-da-...Always look on the bright sssiiiiddddeee of life, da-dum, etc.

Mark,

Yeah, Richard got the smarts in the family--that's for certain. I've enjoyed his cyber columns.

Thanks for your kind words, guy. One o' these days stop by here in Peru when you're heading home on I-80. I do really enjoy your posts. Always good information, food for thought and insights.

You can listen to m' bro's speech to Defcon 3 as well as other fascinating lectures at the site. Me? I'm new to computers. Lots of his observations and insights go way beyond me but I somehow KNOW that what he's saying is very probably what Marshall McCluhan would've noted if he (or someone like him) was here in our time and looking at the cyber revolution.
Max, you might be interested in this site. Yes, I'm in awe of Richard. And I'm real glad that we swept all of that old sibling rivalry crap where it belongs----right in the crapper !

Along similar lines - I think it was Dirk Gently, Douglas Adams' holistic detective, who said something along the lines of
" I'm never quite sure where I'm going, but invariably end up where I'm supposed to be."
Me too, mostly.

I ain't crazy, I just bin in a very bad mood for 30 years!

My favourite quote from (?) Shirley Maclaine in (??) Steel Magnolias.... terrible when you have a favourite quote and can't remember where or who!

Anyway. Always optimistic... hopefully I really am crazy, I'd hate to be sane in this world, I'd go mad!!
