Subject: Syd and Val leaving the Jug
From: Mrs.Duck
Date: 16 Sep 01 - 06:18 PM

At the end of this week Syd and Val will be leaving the Jug in Chapel Haddlesey Yorkshire. They have been wonderful hosts and have done much to promote folk music in our area with the regular Wednesday session and of course the Yorkshire Mudcat gathering. They will be missed by many who have come to regard them as friends and I'm sure anyone who has ever visited the Jug will join with us in wishing them all the best as they head off to Bridlington.
This coming Wednesday will be the last session under their ownership but the new landlord has expressed a desire for things to continue. Those who are able are going to gather at the Jug on Wednesday so that we can take a group photo for Syd and Val to put in their new residence.
Thanks for some very happy times Syd and Val and all the very best for the future
Jane and Geoff

I very much enjoyed meeting them at the Jug and I thought the Jug was a fantastic pub - genuinely one of the best I have ever visited. I wish them all the best for the future.

Oh, geez, this is almost like a beloved Mudcatter leaving us, as I feel they are honourary mambers or at least adjunct Mudders! Please pass on my good wishes and regrets that I've not met them, yet. Thanks, also to them for all they've provided to those of you in the UK. I feel we've come to know them and the Jug, sort of a Mudcat home away from home. Would love to see the pictures when you get them ready.

All the best to Syd and Val!

kat

Geez, I feel like kat does........They have been a wonderful asset and have added to the Mudcat by providing what has now become a legendary place......

My best to both of them and my thanks as well. I hope what they have begun continues on in the same spirit.

Please give them my best wishes.  A change of tenant is always a rather dicey time, so I hope it all goes well.  See you all next time, I hope!

I have only been to The Jug twice, but I can honestly say it is one of the best pubs I have been in, (I have been in a lot of pubs!), not only for the quality of the drinks but the welcoming atmosphere, I hope the next landlord is folk friendly, and please pass on my best wishes to Syd & Val, and wish them a happy retirement.john

I would like to add my thanks to Syd and Val for being such accommodating hosts not only on Wednesday nights but also on the many other occasions when we have had guest musicians staying in the area and have held an impromptu session. I only had to phone and say " Syd, any chance of a session in about an hours time?" The answer would always be "Yes"
I, as a non drinker, find it difficult to find a pub where I can feel at ease, but from the first time at the Jug I was made very welcome and although it is about 10 miles from my home and I pass many pubs on the way I have always considered it "my local."

Lorna and I will miss Val's cooking, her meals were always tasty and well cooked. I well remember the first time we ate there and ordered two large mixed grills, each one would have fed a family of four. She always provided unusual meals like venison steaks or partridge pie and her Desperate Dan Pie, complete with cow horns, was unbelievable.

The new owners will have to go a long way to match Syd and Val's hospitality.
Many are the nights when, at 2-00 am I have joined the locals in trying to put the world to rights. And then there were the times when Ian Stephenson would arrive there before opening time, after traveling from somewhere in the country and ask to phone home for a lift.
There are thousands of other tales I could tell regarding their kindness but for now I would like to wish them the best of luck in their new home. I am sure we have not seen the last of them, they are sure to turn up on the occasional Wednesday night so as Val can join in with her bodrhan without having to leave the session to make a meal or pull a pint.
Thanks again Syd and Val
Bill

And I think I can speak for us, both 'catters and not, on t'other side o'th pennines who visited the Jug and were made so welcome. They didn't even ask to check our passports. We wish them both all the best.

Val and Syd, if you ever decide to visit Gods other county ;-)you would be more than welcome!

Cheers

All the best to Val and Syd. Very happy memories of times spent at the Jug during their time there, Wednesday evenings and particularly the Yorkshire gathering weekend. The late nights followed by full Yorkshire breakfast in the bar the next morning...

It's going to be very sad to see Syd and Val go. Like Bill although I like some distance away it's my local - the bus goes from our house to the crossroads at Chapel Haddersley - and I have often been in other than Wednesday night.

They are taking a break for a few weeks which Syd could do with for his healths sake and then moving to Brid where they have bought shop premises (where they will eventually be selling bottles of real ale:-) if all goes to plan).

The new landlord is well known to Jason and Syd and they assure me he knows how to keep a good pint of real ale and that he likes music so we shall just have to see.

We'll miss you both.

Love John, Chris and Kat xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I don't know what to say.....I spent a wonderful weekend at the Jug (Yorkshire Gathering)...I sang until I lost my voice, played the box until my arms ached, drank until.... well I didn't ACTUALLY end up in a heap on the floor!

It was a superb weekend made all the more special by Syd and Val's welcome. What a lovely couple. What a smashing pub. I'm very sorry to see them go.

My very best wishes to them both.

The Jug is my only local, probably the only pub I go to on a regular basis. I travel 32 miles almost every Wednesday to get there (64 return), such a great place, made by Syd and Val, (A mean Bodhran player!!).

Wednesday farewell of COURSE I'll be there

Syd and Val deserve all the love and luck we send and wish for them. They are initially only going to be in Gowdall, a couple of miles from me - even closer than the Jug - (and praying that the new flood defences hold!), so it's going to be quite easy to keep in touch with them. Val fully intends coming to the Weds session once they are settled, and so it's only "au revoir".

Andrea, under the circumstances the "Mapp and Luciaism" "Eau Reservoir" might be a bit too much?

We went and saw them off properly last night and gave them the framed photo of the Wednesday session crowd. We also met the new landlord and landlady who seem to be really nice. Paul confirmed that he is looking forward to the session continuing and has said if we wish to go back into the other bar we can so we are!!!!

Good luck Syd and Val.
