Or, as the late Fred McCormick once pointed out to me, both tunes mentioned are derivatives of the Irish melody/song Tuirne Mhaire, or Mary’s Spinning Wheel? https://thesession.org/tunes/10726

Yes but if she cannot bear it, why say 'him'- I can only surmise that it was an 18th century usage where him/it were the same thing. I don't sing the song, but if I did, I'd sing 'IT' & make sense

I disagree ~ "him" is quite correct in my view, in present usage!

Haven’t you ever had someone act in a way that made it so you couldn’t stand them, whether or not you were ok with them at other times? Makes perfect sense to me, whether it’s the original obnoxious friend going on about the wars, or the RC version where Jimmy’s manner is so changed that it causes her to dislike him - which is certainly a good enough reason to have to run out in tears.

Sing this to the tune of Andy's gone with cattle. Perfect fit, Northumbrian tune from Oz.

In the original Jeremy isn't even a collier but a farmer, and I get the impression that Nichol's quip about brigadier or grenadier is said to tease her, not out of any ignorance of the difference, on his part at least.
I never quite liked it when I first heard the song, but having found the original I sort of combined the two and put it in my book - it is such a temptation to keep adding more songs when there are still blank pages.
