I have a neighbor who was raised on these songs, they are meat (and drink!) to him. I don't know a one, but get a kick out of seeing him play, cowboy hat tipped back on his head, work-hardened hands so knotted up it's hard to see what chord he's playing. I've never liked the genre but have figured out that at least all the songs he sings have only 3 chords....D, G and A....easiest back-up playing I've ever done....and harmony is easy too! Great fun.....
.
Some of his favorites...the Blackboard of my Heart, Mother and Dad Waltz, In the Pines (very different from the bluesy version I know), We'll Go HONKY TONKIN' Round the Town, OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE, Way Down Yonder in the Indian Nation [OKLAHOMA HILLS]....He's a Hank lover....Hank Wms, Hank Snow, Hank Thompson....

THERE STANDS THE GLASS and WHEN I STOP DREAMING

The worst that I've ever been hurt in my life,
The first time I ever have wanted to die
Was the night that you told me you loved someone else,
And asked me If I could forget.

When I stop dreaming, that's when I'll stop loving you.

Etc.

Absolutly guaranteed to cause cying in beer, if any beer is present!

I was brought up on this stuff...then. I learned two more chords.

How about this one,

Turn up the bottle, pour down the wine
Forget about this moment boys,
Think of a better time.

I leave the bar at 2 o'clock,
Walk on down the line
Another night just spent alone
With them old blue lights and wine.

Them old blue lights they serve as a reminder
Of a love I'm not sure I'll ever find
And each night the bar tender's just a little bit kinder
I guess he knows trouble's on my mind.

Long time ago, happiness came with wine
Now the wine no longer brings it
I drink it all the time
Why do I go on living, with all this hurt and crying
I've looked for the answer all my life
It aint in the wine.

Them old blue lights...etc. Kate Wolf

"Put the bottle on the bar, so's I can pet it
And take down my address before I forget it.
Someone's gonna have to take me home yet
Cuz I'm gonna sit here until I forget.
The way I figure, I've got nothing to lose
So, bartender, just pass the booze."

Haven't a clue who recorded it.

Randa MacNamara used to sing a different song; wish I knew it,

"Take me to a barroom, driver
Set me on a stool.
If he won't be my man, I'm damned
If I'll be his fool.,p> Bat Goddess

How about "Please, mister, please, Don't play B-17"

That may not be the title. Olivia Newton-John did it as a real whiner.

Then there's "Somebody done somebody wrong song."

And a great (i.e., a groaner) but very little known number called "WILL YOUR LAWYER TALK TO GOD FOR YOU?"

Surprised you Hank nuts didn't mention "SETTIN' THE WOODS ON FIRE." Also, I used to sing a great Hank Thompson song called "Oklahoma Home Brew." And "Swingin' Doors", "6 Pack to Go", James Taylor's perfect George Jones vehicle "I'm Just a Bartender" [BARTENDER'S BLUES]......on and on. Gotta love those tunes whether or not you're a whiskey-head.

Subject: Lyr Add: BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE (Guy Clark)
From: Midchuck
Date: 23 Sep 01 - 09:28 PM

Bat Goddess:

It's Guy Clark's BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE:

BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE
(Guy Clark)

Now broken hearted people always seem to drink,
And tryin' to drown those sorrows ain't as easy as you think,
But living with a liar is a hard old way to go.
Laughin' just to keep from crying ain't no way to grow old.

CHORUS: So take me to a barroom, driver. Set me on a stool.
If I can't be her man, I'm damned if I'll be her fool.

They say that whiskey ain't the best way, but then I ain't too smart.
To think I just found out she was lyin' from the start!
So if this is nothing but a bad joke lookin' for a laugh,
Hold on to your lampshade, darlin', cause I'm looking for a hat. CHORUS

So get this taxi movin' cause I got no time to lose.
There's no time to be choosy. Any old bar will do,
Cause I'm lookin' to get silly and I'm lookin' to get loose,
And if that don't get it done, darlin', I'll come looking for you. CHORUS

Peter.

Hasn't anyone mentioned Hank's THERE'S A TEAR IN MY BEER or Buck Owens' ACT NATURALLY? If you want something new, check out Brad Paisley's The Tin Man or THAT'S WHY I'M HERE. Of course, the best cryin' in yer beer songs are by Cajun musicians. But then again, you can't cry in your beer if you can't understand the words.

p.s. Don't exclude Hank's gospel songs. Sipping a quadruple Jack Daniels and Coke while listening to Lost Highway can have great therapeutic value on a lonely Sunday morning.

How about Fred Eaglesmith's Water In The Fuel? It's not a song about drinking, but it fits the Honky Tonk genre. A real tear-jerker leaving you reaching for the bottle.

Kasey Chambers does the definitive version, however. Hard to find it on her available recordings.

"ANOTHER PERFECT COUNTRY SONG" lyrics (thus far) by me;
"Well my trailer burned down,
and my dog ran away.
My girlfriend's pregnant,
and my little brother's gay.
My wife's been seen cheatin with my best friend.
My pickup truck has got a flat tire,
an if Possum crick flows any higher
I'll have to swim to get to my deer camp.
Chorus:
I'm crying my eyes out in my beer over you
What else is a poor ole country boy to do?
This long neck bottle is empty once again
I can't get a break, I can't never win."

Just sing with an appropriate twang...Chip2447
