Well, here we are. In a little under 48 hours, I'm to be standing before a potential new band, singing my lungs out in audition.

I know I'm good enough, I know their material. But I'll be damned if it still doesn't get the nerves going. No matter how many times I run through that mantra, I still know that there's always the chance someone better than I am will be auditioning, and that's something I can't control.

Anyway, for anyone who's ever been through it before -wish me luck! Any relaxation techniques? No more drinking or anything else for me until I get back from the audition, gotta take care of the throat... And any way to clobber this sporadic burst of nerves?

M

Drink lots of water - for the vocal cords, and eat a banana about 45 minutes before you're on - they have a natural beta blocker which calms you down, and makes your hands steady (if you're playing an instrument ?)

Of course if you have my luck, you might slip on the banana peel and break something, or, with all water, pee your pants right in the middle of the audition !?!

Hang in there. You can do it !

LOL... Thanks!

I don't think I'm playing for the audition. They mostly use mandolin, guitar and the like and I'm a mediocre pennywhistler...

But in any case, 46 hours to go... *gulp*

You'll be fine. Just keep your confidence up, and put off any worrying til afterward. And be yourself - personality probably counts for a lot as well as talent if you've all got to work together (that's the edge you can control even if there's someone technically better [which possibility you're not going to think about anymore anyway...]). And don't forget to audition them too - they might not be good enough or nice enough for you.
Can't wait to hear how it goes.
Kristin

Deep breaths. If your standing it's important to be quite steady - feet apart at shoulder level, knees slightly bent. Don't worry about what to do with your hands - that will come naturaly but retsist the temptation to stuff them in your pockets put them behind your back or clasp them in from of you opera style. Practice on your own, in front of the family, anywhere you can. try to have a solo or 'public restricted' practice at the venue if you can.

Apart from that - Knock 'em dead!

Cheers and very best of luck - 'though you don't realy need it:-)

Dave

Laughter in large doses is the best aid to good, relaxed singing I know. Find someone who can handle even the most inappropriate jokes, since right now we may all be ready for a little black humor, and go for it. If you laugh so hard you cry you will sing like an angel for weeks after.

what the equivilant for a singer to Break a leg! Pop a cord?

Whatever - best of luck.

and (tho' it may be cynical of me) don't forget that even if you ARE the best singer - they could still choose someone else for innumerable reasons - and *NONE* of those reasons may reflect on you or your performance.

I dunno... imagine all the other band members in their underwear? ;^)

Perhaps you could try to adopt the body language that the band uses when they perform on stage (Stiff and unmoving? Animated? Walking around the stage? Marching in place? Bobbing/waggling head? Jumping up and down?). This, of course, depends on how much at ease you are making the movements that they do, in the first place (and, if you're not, then you must decide whether it's the band for you).

As King Brilliant/Kristin said, the meshing of personalities is all-important, so do what's comfortable for you and make sure you're comfortable with them. Remember, if you make it into the band, you'll be spending LOTS of time with these people.

Sharon

Thanks all... good advice. Except for the part about them in their underwear - I like 'em, and they're nice guys and all... but there are some things I don't want to contemplate .

26.5 hours to go...

As we approach the hour, I have consulted the Catspaw Scatology Cards for inside knowledge and predictions. I dealt them out first to test that they were working properly and that my readings were accurate. Once again, I was able to ascertain that Dizzy Gillespie is, in fact, still dead. You can see how accurate these cards are huh?

Next I dealt them in two rows and careful reading predicted that I'd scatch my nuts within the hour, and sure enough..........

Then came the magical third deal and the cards are clear.....well, pretty clear anyway. Either you are going to knock 'em dead or halfway through your first song you'll rip a monstrous wet fart and clear the room. Personally I believe it's the former and I wish you the absolute best and the greatest of luck.....although you won't need it.

Just in case it's the latter......take some spare u-trou.

Well, damn 'spaw. It was both.

I MADE IT.

I've yet to stop dancing about the room (scaring the living hell out of the housepets) and hooting and hollering like an idiot.

Thank you all! This means a LOT to me. I haven't been in a group for over a year now...

Again - thank you all.

The group that I'm (I'll say 'provisionally', because I don't really consider it a done deal until I hit the stage with them) provisionally (told you I'd say it) are the Poxy Boggards. They're primarily a renaissance faire based act, and do a great variety of bawdy songs, drinking songs and the like - both traditional and original.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this.

WOW! Congrats! May you hit the stage SOON and often!

(but don't forget to duck and roll when you do!)

I've been being told for years Poxy Boggards are a "don't miss" if I ever get anywhere *near* the left coast.

I think they were at the Richland Renaissamce Faire -- only it was called the Merry Greenwood Faire. They LOOK the same -- but then, who can tell? (BG)

Have fun! Hope you already got the costume.

Jeez--I make my first trip to the mudcat in months, looking to see how the population is reacting to the latest bushit, and here you are again, Pat, gassing up the hospital...it's been years since I've been called upon to fire up my two-watt psychic healing machine, but luckily today I was doing some last minute holiday shopping when I ran across a new series of kids' books by "best selling author" andy griffiths--I couldn't resist buying the first in the series: _The Day My Butt Went Psycho!_, which according to the cover is based on a true story.

The back cover blurb calls it "An epic tale of one brave boy and his crazy, runaway butt" and goes on to ask "Can Zack save the earth from butts gone berserk? Can he defeat the biggest, lugliest, meanest butt the world has ever seen? More important--will Zack and his butt ever find true happiness?"

My sister, my wife, and my niece-in-law will probably lock me out of the house before I get any Christmas dinner, but I couldn't resist buying it for my grand nephew. THIS IS NOT A LIE; THIS IS A REAL BOOK. I found it in the kids section at the Borders bookstore in Emeryville (a real place). I bought it. Willie will love it.

Anyway, Pat, the book is there waiting for you, and two sequels are also on the shelf in the store.

Another exerpt, this time from inside the book: The context: Zack wakes up in time to see his butt jump out the window and when he runs to look out, he sees Mittens the cat about to pounce on it:

"Before Zack had time to do anything, however, Mittens leaped.

"But Zack's butt was faster. It bent over, aimed itself directly at Mittens, and fired a loud, deadly stream of gas. Mittens fell to the ground. Zack's butt took off up the street, its little arms and legs pumping away like pistons."

Pull yourself together, boy--that butt is waiting for you.

--seed(the two watt engine chugging along, humming "I think I can, I think I can...")
