I'm a sucker for the great Rick Danko. Anybody else? Would love to hear from you! What are your favorite Danko moments?

A biography/memorial. A wonderful musician gone much too soon.

Pene Azul- Thanks for the link. Hadn't seen that one before. Most informative.

Johnny the Bone- I've always admired Rick Danko, a powerful force in music for the last thirty or forty years. I'm sure many other Mudcatters would agree. I never managed to see The Band or Danko live, much to my regret. Gone too soon, as Jeff states. But the music definitely lives on, as evidenced by your post here! Thanks, BlueJay

The link that Pene sent is outstanding. That entire site is devoted to The Band, and is EASILY one of the best sites on the web devoted to a rock and roll band. I appreciate your enthusiasm, Bluejay! It is the music and the music only that will live forever. Rick stole the show in The Last Waltz, and is forever immortalized by it. Forever young. "may your hands always be busy... may your feet always be swift"

He not busy being born is busy dying. ROCK AND ROLL!

I'm with you all on this. Rick Danko singing "It Makes no Difference" on "The Last Waltz" is probably my favorite musical moment of all time.

He was unmatched as a vocalist. IMHO nobody else ever came close to equalling the power intensity and emotion of his singing. He really lived the song.

Murray

Ah, The Band. Not only did I like Danko, but Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. Their harmonies were so unique. One of my favourite Band moments was their "When I Paint My Masterpiece" at the Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert. Their voices, their choice of instruments, magical.

Yeah Steve, GREAT harmonies. The Band was just something else and at times defied definition, which was probably for me one of the great appeals. BTW, I read Levon's book and it's really worth a read.

Rick Danko sorely missed as is the great influences of the troubled Richard Manuel. Levon Helm has come all too close to leaving us too.

Robbie Robertson?.......Fuck him!...What an asshole....

'Spaw,

How do you really feel about Robertson? He was obviously a big part of The Band, but I always got a sense that he thought a lot of himself. However, I understand why he would leave, Danko, Manuel and Helm sure messed themselves up badly and it wouldn't have been a healthy atmosphere to bea around.

Never understood why there was such a fuss over his solo stuff. I couldn't warm to it.

The Robbie/Levon feud has everything to do with royalties. Levon, Richard, Garth, and Rick were all about making the best music possible. Robbie was about making all the money. Granted, he was their chief lyricist and one hell of a guitar player, but he definitely could have spread the songwriting credits around a little better. He's now filthy rich, running around with Scorcese, Spielberg and other Hollywood types at Dreamworks. Levon and Garth play small clubs for adoring fans. To the person above who intimated that Levon may not be with us much longer, this is not true! His voice, alas, has been silenced by throat cancer. However, he's been touring like crazy with his new outfit "The Barnburners". He plays the skins with a wide grin like a man possessed. Check them out sometime!

As for the late, great Rick Danko.... man could the boy sing! Some favorite moments off the cuff: The aforementioned "It Makes No Difference"; his spine-tingling warble on "Stage Fright"; his Crazy Chester verse in "The Weight"; "Unfaithful Servant" from Big Pink; his devastating performance of "Bessie Smith" off The Basement Tapes. By the way, if you don't own The Basement Tapes, you're missing some of the finest performances of the Band's and Bob Dylan's careers!!

On the subject of The Band I read in Mojo today that Garth Hudson is filing for bankruptcy for the third time. Royalties ??

JTB....Good post. robertson was always different in goals and at one point that probably helped, but it was a very short time. That he screwed other members is without doubt and the way Helm feels about him is pretty well stated in Levon's book.

One thing.....I DID NOT say that Levon Helm "may not be with us much longer" as you state I did. What I did say, and it is the truth, is "Levon Helm has come all too close to leaving us too."...the throat cancer could have gone either way and were it not for family, it may have gotten him. Yes, he is doing a great job and seems to be enjoying life to the fullest....I will always miss that unique and natural voice.

I was at Toronto's Silver Dollar about a month ago to hear a Bluegrass Band. I was really pissed when I glanced up at the performers board and realized that I had missed Levon and his band by about 4 days.

'Spaw, thanks. The pictures just make me more upset. The Silver Dollar is a wonderful, quaint room (Rick has a beef with the sound guys) where you can still get pickled eggs and quarts of beer. It looks like they were having a blast.

Steve
