Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Zen Date: 03 Jan 09 - 07:29 AM Not b****cks Gary. When I spoke to Terry a few years ago he had stopped making instruments and was only doing limited repair work. I'm absolutely delighted to see he is back to full health and is constructing instruments again. Zen |
Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: GUEST,Gary Hogg Date: 03 Jan 09 - 06:58 AM There's so much bollocks written in these pages. Glad to hear Stefan's ok. He's a legend. Terry Docherty is alive and well too - and still making fine instruments. See his website terrydochertyguitars.com |
Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Zen Date: 27 Oct 08 - 08:15 AM Unfortunately, Terry Docherty has now retired from instrument-making following some health problems. He was a fine maker indeed... I have one of his OMs. Zen |
Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: oombanjo Date: 27 Oct 08 - 08:08 AM I would go to Terry Docherty. He made me a Brazilian 000; 11 years ago I have never wanted another guitar since receiving it |
Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Dave Hanson Date: 27 Oct 08 - 03:31 AM See the thread ' Farewell Regality ' it's sung by the man who wrote it, Terry Conway on Kathryn Tickells CD ' The Northumberland Collection.' |
Subject: RE: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: GUEST,Rob from Adelaide South Oz Date: 26 Oct 08 - 11:21 PM Hi. Does anyone know where I might get the words and guitar chords for a song I heard on a Catherine Tickell album - the song is "Hexhan Shire" sung by a male whose name I can't recall but he's a Geordie? Thanks |

Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: GUEST,Riggy@Work Date: 14 Mar 03 - 08:51 PM Back in '71 I traded my Martin Archtop C-1 guitar for Stefan's wonderful Wheatstone Aeola concertina, sending us both forth on course for our lives. That guitar & the portuguese 10-string he got from Andy Irvine formed the basis for his designs, as he mentions on the website above. Thank you, Stefan !! Riggy |
Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 03 - 07:33 PM Wondering if you still have the Nic Jones tab for Canadiee-i-o? I'd be very grateful if you could send it across. I'm pretty close but any extra help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Jon. Macclesfield, UK. PS Having just picked up a guitar from Stephan Sobell last November I believe he is still well and truely with us (unless there has been an unexpected death in the last few months since I last saw him)! Do let me know if this is the case! |

Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: GUEST,Boab Date: 19 Sep 01 - 10:50 PM Got in touch immediately after reading the start of this thread with an old friend who still runs a folk club in Hexham. Stefan lives in Hexham Shire, close to a small village called Whitley Chapel---and, by all reports received, STILL lives there, carrying on with his excellent work.We are all thankful---he will be a big loss when he finally moves on. A real good man to know, and a regular visitor [and performer, on occasion]at Hexham Folk Club back in the sixties and seventies. Lang may yer lum reek, Stefan!! [The "Wizard" will probably tell you of my inquiry!] |

Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Murray MacLeod Date: 19 Sep 01 - 05:54 PM As soon as I read this I emailed Martin Sinpson, who is Stefan's agent in the USA, (and is currently touring Britain) Here is his reply (dated 8.26 this morning EST "Stefan is most alive and well.....where the hell did you hear that? M." Please check your facts in future before posting such crap, Neil Comer. Murray |
Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Wesley S Date: 19 Sep 01 - 05:52 PM I hope this is just a rumor also. I tend not to believe things I hear first on the internet. All that aside if someone is willing to wait 6 months or so I would highly reccommend the works of Davy Stuart of New Zealand. Not only is my 8 stringer a wonderful piece of work but the rate of exchange between the United States and NZ meant that I only paid around $700.00 for a top of the line octave mandolin. Indian rosewood and spruce, herringbone trim with an abalone rosette. It's tone is warm and sweet and volume wise it's great. |

Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: O'Trasno Date: 18 Sep 01 - 09:45 PM "News of my death has been greatly exaggerated" Can we be sure that this is for real? I spoke to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago..... More details,Neil? |

Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Big Mick Date: 18 Sep 01 - 08:36 PM Yep. He will be missed. For the 10 string, give David Freshwater in Scotland a try. HERE is a link to his site. Take a look at the celtic know soundhole 10 string model. I have a standard 8 string bouzouki about to arrive next week. I am drooling with excitement. His instruments have a great edgy sound that I love. Mick |
Subject: RE: Help: Stefan Sobel Guitar/bouzouki From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Sep 01 - 08:29 PM I'd not heard he had died and am sorry to hear it but there will still be other makers. Fylde make a nice cittern, John Hullah may make one and certainly could, I got to try a Terry Docherty mandola when I visited the Jug, he certainly could make one... Jon
