Not b****cks Gary. When I spoke to Terry a few years ago he had stopped making instruments and was only doing limited repair work. I'm absolutely delighted to see he is back to full health and is constructing instruments again.

Unfortunately, Terry Docherty has now retired from instrument-making following some health problems. He was a fine maker indeed... I have one of his OMs.

Back in '71 I traded my Martin Archtop C-1 guitar for Stefan's
wonderful Wheatstone Aeola concertina, sending us both forth
on course for our lives. That guitar & the portuguese 10-string
he got from Andy Irvine formed the basis for his designs, as he

Got in touch immediately after reading the start of this thread with an old friend who still runs a folk club in Hexham. Stefan lives in Hexham Shire, close to a small village called Whitley Chapel---and, by all reports received, STILL lives there, carrying on with his excellent work.We are all thankful---he will be a big loss when he finally moves on. A real good man to know, and a regular visitor [and performer, on occasion]at Hexham Folk Club back in the sixties and seventies. Lang may yer lum reek, Stefan!! [The "Wizard" will probably tell you of my inquiry!]

I hope this is just a rumor also. I tend not to believe things I hear first on the internet. All that aside if someone is willing to wait 6 months or so I would highly reccommend the works of Davy Stuart of New Zealand. Not only is my 8 stringer a wonderful piece of work but the rate of exchange between the United States and NZ meant that I only paid around $700.00 for a top of the line octave mandolin. Indian rosewood and spruce, herringbone trim with an abalone rosette. It's tone is warm and sweet and volume wise it's great.

Yep. He will be missed. For the 10 string, give David Freshwater in Scotland a try. HERE is a link to his site. Take a look at the celtic know soundhole 10 string model. I have a standard 8 string bouzouki about to arrive next week. I am drooling with excitement. His instruments have a great edgy sound that I love.

I'd not heard he had died and am sorry to hear it but there will still be other makers. Fylde make a nice cittern, John Hullah may make one and certainly could, I got to try a Terry Docherty mandola when I visited the Jug, he certainly could make one...
