Subject: 'New' Tim Hart and Maddy Prior song???
From: GUEST,rain4est3@home.com

I've been going through some 1/4" reel-to-reel tapes of my father's recorded in the '60s and found a song by TH and MP from an English radio program hosted by John Peel. I'm wondering whether anyone else has ever come across this song as I'd love to find an original LP recording of it.

It's called "Seamus the Showman" and is based on an old alphabet song: A is for horses B for supper C for yourself...etc

with the chorus

And The Showman he cried! "We're all at your side And, there's no need to worry at all"

If no one's heard of it, I've learned the lyrics and taught myself a fair version of the guitar accompaniment as played by Hart and will post it here. As I said, I'd love to know if there's an original out there first 'cos this song is great !

Hugo

It certainly doesn't sound familiar to me Hugo. I look forward to seeing it posted.

Please, please post this - I remember Tim and Maddy singing this years and years ago. The time is ripe for a revival!

"Seamus the Showman" is not on the three known Tim Hart & Maddy Prior albums (Folk Songs of Old(e) England, Summer Solstice) and not on any other album in the fairly extensive Steeleye Span & members' discography on my Steeleye Span website.

I'd really like to hear this version...

Reinhard

I've seen this song credited to Tim Hart and June Tabor recorded on the John Peel show in 1975 but im sure the version i have on cassette is with Maddy Prior.

This song written by Tim Hart was included on the ultra-rare LP "Jack with a Feather" by Spriguns of Tolgus (later mere "Spriguns") in 1975. The vocalists were Mandy Morton and Rick Thomas. It includes some funny rhymes like "And so we made our exodus/With people throwing eggs at us". The would-be promoter of the title is no use: "He said his name was Seamus/And he could make me famous".
