Well they've done it again. After the magnificent election of their new leader they follow it up with Mr Cash. Even their own members must be reeling in disbelief! Personally I am convinced it is an inside job by the Labour party to get them to self destruct.... Hmm maybe tho' this is bad news .... maybe Labour now want to dominate the right even more than they are at present. What hope for us lefties???

This is indeed providing much-needed light relief Sarah. They are now building up a totally unelectable team which is good news except as you say dear Tony may move even further to the right to fill the gap the old Tory Party are vacating. I'm just wondering how Mr Cash will weave his Eurobollix into his speeches as shadow Attorney-General.

This troubles me greatly as something of an "Old" Labourite.

One could always hope that Mr Cash's appointment ( which is not part of the shadow cabint but allows him to attend)will mean that he will not be allowed to make anti European Statements and he will have to follow the party line of urmm ahh...

Dear Cllr,

I am sure you are a fine and conscientious Councillor and (I mean this sincerely) one feels a great deal of sympathy for the more sensible elements of the Tory Party in all of this. I feel we do need a decent opposition to Tony and his cronies despite the fact that I am not a Conservative supporter myself.

Boris Johnson is the man. At least we'd have an entertaining opposition, and he'd probably have the sense of humour enough to pop up unexpectedly to the Left of Tony Blair, which wouldn't be at all hard. In fact at the present rate of going, I can imagine the Tory party heading Right, and still ending up on the Left of Tonyt.

I was particularly taken by young Boris when, after a night of Tories crashing to ruin all over the place, he told the people ghathered for the declaration; "Go back to your homes, and prepare for breakfast." (A reference to a previous Liberal leader who had told his party conference "Go back to your constituencies and prepare for government" - for Americans, that is a bit like Ralph Nader saying the same thing.) Of course Boris had just won his seat when he said that, and was probably feeling relatively cheerful.

I like the idea of Boris in charge .... definately a sound political move. Perhaps Doris Karloff (aka Ann Wid) could be deputy. Did anyone hear the classic comment by Jeremy |Paxman on newsnight to the remark that the new shadow cabinet does not have any household names. He said "These people aren't even household names in their own households" nicely put!!!

I must say I am realy enjoying the political antics at the moment. Electing the ex PM of Rhodesia as head of the Tory Party. Then roping in a Country singer to help. They are now complaining that Chas and Dave have been appointed to run the BBC - at least that's what I heard. Can't see anything wrong with a bit of colouful cockney wit myself. Don't see what all the fuss is about...

Cash is merely a single-issue bore, but some of these people are truly frightening.
Bernard Jenkin is bonkers (I grew up near him and knew him quite well in his younger days, and he's always been mad and army-barmy), Julian Lewis is quite deranged and conducted a most unpleasant letter campaign against a friend of mind while Eric Forth seems to take malicious delight in sabotaging any legislation with which he doesn't agree.
And that's just a handful dredged from the shallower end of the gene pool on the far right of the shadow cabinet. Gulp!
If I stop eating the red Smarties, will they all go away?

Bercow - now there's a strange fish! Lewis conducted a hugely vitriolic letter campaign against a friend of mine and had to be slapped down with the threat of a writ before he backed off. A most strange individual. But, somehow, all rather irrelevant at the moment, which can't be right...?
