My father, Henry A. Norfleet had an Irish mother, Tennie Allen. He use to play a fiddle tune he called "The Eighth of January." I have never heard anyone play it since. Can you help me find this tune?

Also, let me know that you came through MUDCAT.

The Fiddler's Companion gives us a detailed record of ths tune. Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" was written using this tune as a base.

Dr Humphrey Bate's version has been reissued on a fairly recent County CD: 'Nashville: The Early String Bands Vol 1' CO-CD 3521. The version by the Arkansas Barefoot Boys can be found on 'Echoes of the Ozarks Vol 2' County CO-CD 3507.
