Hello weepiper, If you look on the Mudcat Links Page you will find a link to the Rombalds Mummers! http://website.lineone.net/~aaardvark/index.html

You will find lots of information Photographs of the costumes used in several plays. I have also included a copy of the script for 1983 version of the St George and the Dragon. This play is based on a traditional Mummers play fro Kirby longsdale in YORKSHIRE!! I say based as the plays would differ from village to village. This is the Rombalds Mummers version where St George fights a Dragon that is full of Nucular Power! An Oil sheik, a Turkish night who is killed in the play is brought back to life however the Job is done by Private Pratice not National Health! Have a look and I hope you enjoy the web site! Cheers Tyke

In 'Lancashire Legends' (HArland and Wolf) it has the complete transcript of a Lancashire Mummers play which, oddly enough, is identical to the Lancaster Easter Pace Egg play (Apart from the seasonal references that is!).

Buggered if I am going to type it all in but I can scan it if you like - may even work with my OCR software (but I doubt it).

PM me me here with your email addy or email me on dpolshaw@ntlworld.com if you would like a copy.

Cheers

Dave the Gnome
Suspected OCR version -

I would suggest you contact (Dr.) Eddie Cass on email: eddie.cass@btinternet.com . Eddie, apart from being a hell of a nice guy, is an authority on such things. Also you might try to contact duncan Broomhead of Macclesfield (Bollington I think), Cheshire. He holds a huge amount of information on mummers plays and souling plays. If you want to PM me or email me directly on john.jocys@btinternet.com I'll keep you informed of any other info I come up with.

John (aka King George)

As the Captain of Mummers for the Shakespeare Morris Men for the past 15 years or so, I would suggest that, if you just want any suitable play, then Snuffy's link to the Sheffield University site is probably your easiest option.

But, if instead you want to have an authentic play from your own locality (where's that?) or are interested in a particular form of play (eg Robin Hood Play etc), then I would suggest that you speak to Ron Shuttleworth of Coventry Mummers. He is the Mummers Archivist for the Morris Ring of England, and I am sure that he will be very happy to dig an appropriate play out of his archives for you. He hasn't got his vast range of literature online yet but has an initial site, which is at < a href = "http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/walk/ykp55/mumming/"> Folk Plays Archive

If you want to contact Ron please send me a personal message and I will give you his telephone number.

And then there's the issue of what song to sing at the end of the play. Again you may be happy with a generic song or you may be after a particular song or two like I am on the following link: < a href = "http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?ThreadID=28581" > Mummers Songs

"We're one, two, three jolly boys all in one line ... "
Alan

I have a few, but I reckon that Sheffield Uni would be a very good bet. Although I haven't checked it out, it is/was where Dr. Ian Russell could be found. As he was very friendly with one of the mumming group my SO was with in Nottinghamshire in the early 1980s, and came out to watch them one year, I bet what I have is already on. I got my scripts (except one, and that's from Mansfield, so it's probably there too) through the group.

Andrea

I have a script for the Swansea Valley Mummers Play, which was collected in the 1950's and is performed by the Men of Sweyn's Ey (Morris) in its home area each Christmas. It is quite a short play compared with some others. (I have played Robin Hood and the Doctor at different times).
