Subject: Lyr Req: AT HOME WITH THE EXILES (Ed Miller)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 Nov 11 - 04:28 PM

Here's my transcription from the recording heard on Spotify:

AT HOME WITH THE EXILES
Written by Ed Miller
As sung by Ed Miller on "Generations of Change" (2004)

1. Across the Atlantic I did fly,
Left old Scotland, I know not why,
Never dreamt that I'd say goodbye,
Didn't plan to be an exile.
I landed in Americay
For just a year or so to stay,
But I'm still livin' here today,
Happy among the exiles.

CHORUS: My only homeland is six-foot high.
For its independence I will die.
No matter where my feet may fly,
I'll be at home with the exiles.

2. Between two places your self can get torn:
The place where you live and the place where you were born,
For one you knew, and one seemed so foreign
When first you became an exile.
So many trips that I've made back
To enjoy the music and the craic,
But each time my bags I've repacked
And gone on home to the exiles.

3. And an amigo from the Andes high,
A samba or a quacker(?) can bring tears to his eye,
But his team and his wife and his son who'll grow high
Will keep him happy as an exile.
And the fiddler mannie frae Aberdeen
Makes his livin' on an IBM machine,
But he never forgot the bothys where he'd been
Before he became an exile.

4. For there's good things here and there's good things there.
There's love for the music ev'rywhere,
And there's always friends with these things to share,
If you enjoy your life as an exile.
For narrow national pride is for a mind that's small.
I'm only too happy to have these friends all,
And find the true meaning of internationale.
Ev'ryone's an exile.

[Men of Worth also sing this song on their album "In Full Flight" (2006). They omit verse 3.]

["Quacker" is surely the wrong word, but I have no idea what it should be.]

I found this quote at http://crl.nmsu.edu/users/madavis/Site/Book7/ll17.html

My only homeland is six feet high
For its independence I will die
No matter where my feet may fly
I'll be at home with the exiles

It's from Ed Miller - a Scottish expatriot living these many years in Austin, Texas. I'll go look for more info.

Forgot to post the above, so here's the result:

One brief blurb from somewhere:
His songs, from the traditional to newly composed, can be heard on his recordings Border Background, Home and Away, Scottish Voice, Live at the Cactus Cafe and At Home with the Exiles and his most recent, The Edinburgh Rambler.

And a website, although it doesn't contain the lyrics. Go to

Sorcha, it's a folk song. I don't have the name of the mann who does it. I heard it years ago on a public radio folk music station. Thanks.

No luck with this one either. Do you have an artist, date; is it pop, folk, what?

anybody have the lyrics to a song which includes the lyrics, "Here Among the Exiles" if that is not, in fact, the title? Other lyrics to it include: "My only country is six foot high." It mentions Central Americans and a Scottish computer worker living in North America. Thanks.
