Subject: A Walk in the Black Forest: UK tv theme?
From: Steve Parkes
Date: 03 Jul 01 - 03:44 AM

Help! My little brother Neil has asked me a question I can't answer, and I know he looks up to me as the fount of all knowledge of things musical. (Actually, that's Joe Offer!) I'd hate to see the disappointment on his young face (he's only 42), so I'm turning to the people I know can put his mind at ease.

This is his question:
What was the name of the 60's children's TV programme which featured "A Walk in the Black Forest" as it's sig tune? I know it was a sort of out door pursuits type magazine...

Thanks--I know I can rely on you,
Steve

I remember the tune (a top 20 hit in Britain), don't remember the programme. Trying to remember who recorded it. Simon Park Orchestra?

The Simon Park Orchestra? did the theme for Van Der Valk, the Dutch Detective. That tune was called Eye Level, and I hated it, mostly because I was in a schools' Brass Band (apostrophe in correct place - it contained members from several scools) and it the the Flavour of the Month that year, as far as annoying tunes went.
My favourites were Souza Marches - The Thunderer, in particular, and stuff actually written for Brass Bands. I lived just down the Hill from Queensbury, home of the Black Dyke Mills brass band. I am told that they had trouble with the name when touringg America, as people expected coloured lesbians, or is that just another Urban Legend?
Can't recall the programme name you are after - I might ask my parents who are out with the twins.

I can't remember a TV prog that used it, sorry, Steve, but then I'm a mere youngster like your baby brother. I do however remember doing ballet exercises to the tune :0) (that and Red Roses for a Blue Lady) and hearing it incessantly as supermarket music.

Posted your query on a TV nostalgia site I visit (no answers yet - not as active as here).

On a google search came across someone asking the same question on the Guardian newspaper's site and reference to the Goodies (great BBC comedy, probably badly dated by now)- when they had their Pirate Radio Station it was the only record they had.

Will let you know if anyone answers your question.

I deliberately didn't read this thread yesterday because I *knew* it would create one of those "ear-worms" that go round your head all day. And now I've done it - and still can't think of the programme.
It's real lift music, though, isn't it? It's like having your ears filled with sugar syrup!

Nostalgia here - who remembers the theme tune to "White Horses" "Come white horses, come and play away... da da da di dah di dah di dah......or something.. a worm tune I'm afraid!

Now you've done it, Challis...!

On white horses let me fly away
To a land of dreams so far away
Let me run
To the sun
To a world my heart can understand
It's a gentle, warm and wonder -land
Far away
Far away.

Middle section:
(.........
And the .....)
When the day is done,
We'll ride to meet the sun,

Repeat 1st vse.

...or something! I can remember singing this in the playground at school, probably 1969/70? My friend was practising this and for an audition for -what was it called- "Junior Showtime"?

Still can't help with the original request, sorry, Steve.

In June/July someone asked about this tune being possibly theme music for a UK TV show. At least I thought it was here, but I can't find the thread. I posted the question on another message board I know and 3 months later someone replied having written to the source - indeed it may have been a US show.

I can post the reply here or to the thread author if they can let me know I haven't imagined the original thread (or if others are interested.

___________________________ The posting:

I e-mailed the web master at http://www.horstjankowski.com about this, and got the following reply:

Dear Peter,

With reference to your question as to whether Horst Jankowski's "A Walk in the Black Forest" was ever used as a theme tune by the BBC, I very much doubt this, based on the following relevant information, that I have taken directly from an interview which Horst gave to WDR, a radio station in Germany.

" I had originally written that tune as "Eine Schwarzwaldfahrt" in 1961 for a radio show. It was a travel programme and I recorded a couple of tracks about famous places like, Paris, the Alps and that kind of thing. "Eine Schwarzwaldfahrt" was about a beautiful trip through Germany's Black Forest. It became successful in America first, in 1964, three years after I had recorded it. The whole story is a very unfortunate part of my career. In the sixties American producers were coming to Europe to buy music for TV shows."

"This was much cheaper for them than producing it at home since here they didn't have to pay musicians and the union. I sold them four tracks from the radio programme, including "Eine Schwarzwaldfahrt" and they paid me 125, - Deutschmarks, which seemed OK at the time. I signed a piece of paper and started work on something else. We musicians were pretty stupid back then. Not long after that, my song was used in an American TV show, and became a huge hit there under the title " A Walk in the Black Forest". It was only then that I realised what exactly I had signed. I wouldn't get any royalties, all rights were owned by an American company. It took me seven years, several lawyers, and lots of money to get the rights back. After seven years, of course, the song was no longer a hit and didn't even make back the money I had spent on the lawsuit. Although I went on to sell lots of albums, I didn't make a penny from "Black Forest!"

So, there we are then Peter, there is no mention of England or the BBC. On the contrary it would seem that "A Walk in the Black Forest" was in fact used for an American TV show!!

I hope that this information helps to answer your question.
yours sincerely,
Phil. (Kent).

I Also did a Google search, and found a reference at Guardian On Line, where someone suggested that it was used for Desmond Morris' "Animal Magic" programme. However, Animal Magic started in 1962, 3 years before "A Walk In The Black Forest" became a hit in August 1965, and was hosted by Johnny Morris, not Desmond Morris, so I'd have to qualify that source as unreliable.

Warm regards Peter

Thanks for the info folks! It was my little brother Neil who started it off, actually. (He plays the saxophone, poor deluded lad; but he's family, after all.) Eve since he was a little boy, he's looked up to me to answer all those questions he can't answer for himself, like "where do the flies go in winter?" and "when are you going to buy a round?". So naturally, when he came up with yet another daft query, he turned to me; and rather than say, "how should I know?", I thought I'd ask my Mudcat friends in the sure and certain knowledge that they'd be able to tell me, and keep up my dear little bro's touching faith in my omniscience. I know it will make his bleary little eyes light up when I pass this on to him (even though it hasn't quite provided the answer he was waiting for).

You'll know how sincere I am when I say "thank you, Mudcatters" from Neil and me.

Well, there's help from Wikipedia, which says A Walk in the Black Forest was the theme song for a U.S. game show called "Reach for the Stars," which had 65 weekday episodes beginning in January, 1967.

And here (click) is a YouTube video that will bring back memories of all the radio shows that ended with this tune.

I remember a tv series in the mid/late 60's featuring a group of scouts walking and site seeing. I am sure it was actually called "A walk in the black forest" and definitely used that as the theme tune.
I remember it well as my friends at the time and I used to watch it every week and by coincidence their names were all represented in the program; Nigel, John, Paul etc all except mine!!!

I can confirm that A walk In The Black Forest was indeed used as a UK television sig tune. The opening footage featured a canoe being rowed. The reason I am looking at this site is because I am trying to find out the name of the recording artist. Horst Jankowski's version was not the one played on the programme. It was by a quartet consisting of piano, electric guitar, bass and drums and was a slightly different arrangement. I have heard this version used elsewhere, so it wasn't specially recorded for the programme. By hook or by crook I will find out about this and as soon as I know I will be back with the answer to both questions.

Does anyone remember a Dutch detective TV programme shown during the pre-6pm children's viewing time; in black and white days - possibly mid 60s? It's theme tune was by Bert Kampfaert and the title sequences featured a driver's eye view of a journey on a Dutch city motorway. Well before Van der Walk.
