Our last 4th Sunday Shanty Swap of the year is taking place September 23rd at 7 PM. The Observatory is an old wooden octagon signal tower constructed back in 1807 and is a great place for a song circle. Members of Roll & Go will be ready to lead some songs but we would love to have others do the same, in turn. We welcome traditional as well as contemporary songs of the sea, ballads as well as shanties.

Last time we had about 30 people attending, relatives and old friends as well as some new folks who were anxious to lead songs. Bring an extra chair to share!

The tower sits high on Munjoy Hill and commands a sweeping view of Casco Bay. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children, with proceeds donated to Greater Portland Landmarks which maintains the building.

Please post if you're attending.

Cheerily, Charley Noble

This is a great alternative to watching TV, staring at the wall, or sampling abusive substances. However, some of the songs celebrate abusive substances.

Looks like this is about to slide off the edge of the earth again. Maybe it should.

I'll be there Charley! I am meeting my girlfriend's father and step mother at dinner before the chantey sing. Wish me luck!

Wish I could come, but it's a long commute from Maryland. One of these years I'll be at my cabin on Sebago Lake on a 4th Sunday -- then I'd be sure to make it!

Have fun!

Nancy

Nancy, we'd love to see you up here. Maybe we can adapt the Great Lakes fresh-water whaling song to Lake Sebago in your honor.

Now the rest of you keyboard addicts within range of Portland, cast off your patch chords and converge on the tower!

Well, it was a good night of singing, though I admit we were stumped pretty easily with THE GOLDEN VANITY and almost with LEAVING OF LIVERPOOL. One of the dangers when parodies start outnumbering the originals. Great version of DEAD DOG CIDER. Let's look to more gatherings this winter. Naem's ALABAMA JOHN was formidable. Uncle Jacque was missed.
