In my Esperanto hymnal I have two versions of this (one Christmas, the other general) but no link to an English version. The Cyber Hymnal doesn't have it. I don't see it yet amongst the stuff Susan's been posting, so anybody have a good link for us?

Thanks,
Liland

PS Here are a couple of versions from a Google Search:

Liland, do you think it is an old one, from slavery times?

If so go ahead and post those lyrics... or post them anyway if they are not already here somewhere.

I wouldn't know a pre-1865 song from a post-1865 song if it bit me, sad to say. I rather doubt it's authentic in its current published forms but I have no doubt much of it goes back one way or another to those days. I'll work it up and post it, I guess. But if anybody has other variants or info on the provenance, it'd be good to hear 'em.

Liland

We had a pretty go at it in this thread (click). I see I posted a set of lyrics, but neglected to note where I found them. I had thought the song went back to the movie "Raisin in the Sun," but believe I found out it came from the 19th Century.

Go for it Liland-- probably best to put 'er in the thread Joe provided! How about you check all those sources you had, and then make one giant monster song out of all the verses already posted, plus yours? Posted over at the thread Joe gave?

Thanks, Joe. I ran a supersearch on " (not within quotes) Amen See the baby " and it didn't turn it up; oh well.

Well, Joe, I may not be able to challenge your folk music knowledge base, but movies!!! The one you were thinking of was "Lilies of the Field", not "Raisin in the Sun". Poitier sang it while he was working (putting a roof on a building, I think) for the nuns in "Lilies".
