Please help me to find the words to this song. It sounds like a lullaby, but it is not. I think it is about the Jacobite rebellion.Love Kerstin

Is this maybe two songs? I've heard one called Hush, hush done to the tune of Chi mi na Morbheannan or The Mist Covered Mountains. Sorry, I don't know the lyrics but maybe searching for one of those might be worth a try...

Two different pieces.  It is at times like this that the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page, comes into its own.  Type inisheer into it, and hit "GO".  Then do the same for hush hush.  It really works!  Don't believe everything that you'll read about the background to the latter song (a modern piece set to an old tune, and not Jacobite), though; some people seem to believe that the Wicked English were responsible for the Highland Clearances, whereas the sad truth is that the main offenders were the Highland lairds themselves.

On the album "Spirit of Scotland", North Sea Gas does a medley "Hush Hush and Inisheer"... is this what you're looking for? The two are actually separate songs, though. A version of the "Hush Hush" lyrics are in the Mudcat database as SMILE IN YOUR SLEEP, but the words are some different in the NGS version. I found the lyrics below at an MP3.com site, and I think they're a little closer to that version (crossing my fingers that I'm not going to mangle up the formatting):

Hush, hush, time tae be sleepin'.
Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin';
Dreams of peace and of freedom,
So smile in your sleep, bonny baby.

Once, our valleys were ringin'
with sounds of our children singin',
but now, sheep bleat 'til the evenin'
and shielings stand empty and broken.

(Chorus)

Where stands our proud Highland mettle ?
Our men, once sae feared in battle
now stand, cowed, huddled like cattle,
and soon tae be shipped o'er the ocean.

Oh, we stood with our heads bowed in prayer
while Factors laid our cottages bare.
The flames fired the clear mountain air,
and many were dead in the mornin'.

(Chorus)

Nae use greetin' or prayin' now.
Gone. Gone, all hopes of stayin',
sae hush, now. The anchor's a-weighin'.
Don't cry in your sleep, bonny baby.

(Chorus)
Note from Joe Offer:
This song, properly known as "Smile in Your Sleep," was written by Jim McLean. It appears unattributed in the Digital Tradition, under the title Don't Cry In Your Sleep (click). Tune and more complete lyrics are in this thread (click)

For an earlier posting of these words, which can easily be found by searching as I described earlier on, see:  Tune Req: Hush, hush time to be sleeping
