Subject: Anyone know of TUDJAAT?
From: Dave the Gnome
Date: 22 Sep 01 - 12:02 PM

Heard a fantastic track on the radio the other day by an act called Tudjaat (The presenter pronounced it too-jay).

I have since discovered they are a duo of Inuit Indian girls who have had one CD out and the track I heard was off a compilation called Native American Odyssey. I listened to samples of the other tracks om that album, via Amazon, and was not over-struck on th erest. The CD they did on their own however seems to be out of print (Is that the right term for CD's? - anyway - I 'm sure you know what I mean)

Does anyone know the CD or have it? Would you be willing to sell it, swap it or at least let me have a listen?

Thanks in Advance

Dave the Gnome

This from their website,

"Tudjaat is Medeleine Allakariallak and Pheobe Atagotaaluk. They are Inuit throat singers and are direct descendants of the High Arctic Exiles. Throat singing is a singing technique thousands of years old in which Inuit ladies would pass time in the long dark winters by mimicking the sound of nature (i.e. the goose, walrus, whale cries, etc), and make it more rhythmic.

Tudjaat came to be when Madeleine's remarkable voice was first heard in a choir used in the production of Susan Aglukark's third CD. This 19 year old girl from Resolute struck producer Randall Prescott with her maturity and great love for her people and land. When it was discovered that she had a cousin Phoebe in Inukjuak who also was a throat singer, steps were taken to bring her "South" to record with her cousin. With this, Tudjaat was born. "

Will post more when I find it.

Highly reccommend the CD by Alacie Tullaugaq and Lucy Amarualik and also check out anything that has been done by the Nunavik Throat Singers, Evie Marks and Sarah Beaulne too. Great stuff!!!
