Subject: RE: Origins: Lily the Pink - Winke Winke
From: Paul Burke
Date: 30 Jan 24 - 11:39 AM

The origins of Lily the Pink go back much further than 19th Century USA, and are to be found in the Middle East of about 3000 years ago. The original song was a hymn to a female demonic deity, Lilith the Sphinx. You may also have heard that the popular Children's Favourites song of the fifties, "The Sun Has Got His Hat On", originated in the Egypt of Pharaoh Akhenaten and was a hymn to the rising sun: The Sun, as God, is Aten- hip hip hip hooray....

I have only just seen this thread! I have always felt that De Höhner's gormless ditties contrast badly with the wit and originality of their rivals, De Bläck Fööß. Still, not many folks are discriminating when singing at the tops of their voices in crowded bars after the tenth glass of Kölsch!

Cyril Tawney said "Sucking cider through a straw" reminded him of his early days as as an apprentice in the Royal Navy, huddling round the hut stove during the bitter 1947 winter and singing songs and telling stories. "Sucking cider" was Cyril's favourite.

Listening to 'de Höhner' (the chicken) yesterday in TV. At least two further Irish tunes have been transmutated into German Carnival songs.

One, as unlikely as it sounds was 'Follow me up to Carlow' and the second (a favourite tune among German carnivalists) was 'We're on the one road'.

Now, can we find a tune/air for "Lily the Pink"? I see the ABC Snuffy posted in this thread (click), but it doesn't seem to work very well for me. Snuffy would be right to clobber me if I said if "doesn't meet my high standards of quality." Maybe I should just say that I don't quite understand Snuffy's tune - is that more diplomatic?? [grin]

(Wave) Bye, bye

Hein (Heinrich) and Lisbeth (Elisabeth)*
Share a bed
since twenty years the same game
every evening the Berghoff**
and after that a TV-movie
What is too much, is too much.

Lisbeth stretches out
Hein has a good stretch
"Today is one of these days"
"Say is there anything new
except the old?"
Hein knows no answer and says:
"You know what?:

Chorus:
Wave bye bye, wave bye bye
I'm going to have a drink
One, two beer, then I'll come home again
I can't stand it at home any more,
I have to come out from here
Yes, you should understand that."

But then one evening
Liz says: "Hein, I'm fed up
You always go and leave me alone"
"Ach, stop squeaking
think of my nerves,
Will's wife also stays at home"

"Hein, I'm not interested in that"
Liz now gets furious:
"Why don't you take me out with you?"
"That's nothing for women
better take up knitting,
I now look football!" Upon that she says:
"You know what, Heinrich?

chorus

Hein is very piqued (?),
That has never happened to him
And he let football be football (left football alone),
He was in such a rage
It is something else - isn't it -
When he goes out at night,
How comes that woman dares
Simply to say:

Chorus:
Chorus:
Wave bye bye, wave bye bye
I'm going to have a drink
One, two beer, then I'll come home again
I can't stand it at home any more,
I get insane in here
Yes, you should understand that."

* dat Lisbeth: in Koelsch German, Women are ‚das' (neutrum?), males are of course ‚der' (him)
** Dagmar Berghoff: (very) long-time speaker of the Tagesschau (then the one and only evening TV news at 8 pm). To phone between 8 and 8.15 pm was a serious breach of etiquette then.

Dave The Gnome:

SIPPING CIDER

The sweetest girl, I ever saw.
Sat sipping cider throug a staw oh oh, (oh oh to rhyme with straw)
The sweetest girl, I ever saw.
Sat sipping cider through a staw

I said, "fair miss, I you implore,
Why sip you cider through a straw oh oh?"
I said, "fair miss, I you implore,
Why sip you cider through a straw?"

She said to me, "There is no law,
'Gainst sipping cider through a straw oh oh"
She said to me, "There is no law,
'Gainst sipping cider through a straw"

Now cheek by cheek, and jaw by jaw,
We both sip cider through a straw oh oh,
Now cheek by cheek, and jaw by jaw,
We both sip cider through a straw.

And now I've got, a mother in law,
Through sipping cider through a straw oh oh
And now I've got, a mother in law,
Through sipping cider through a straw ^^^

A cautionary tale, as sung (if I remember correctly) by Nina & Frederick in the 1960s

Complete co-incidence again. On the radio a couple of weeks back they played a song called 'Drinking cider through a straw' and guess what? Same tune! Started off

'Prettiest girl that
ever I saw.
Drinking cider
through Straw-aw-aw.'

and finished

'Now I've got a
Mother-in-law.
Through drinking cider
through a Straw-aw-aw.'

It was performed by Nina and Frederik, whom the anouncer told an interesting story about. But that is a story for another thread I think:-)

Strange though it may seem, there are songs which did not emanate from Ireland! I remember my late father, who was otherwise totally uninterested in the popular music of the time, hearing "Lily the Pink" when the Scaffold version was in the charts. He proceeded to sing to me a bawdy rendition which may have been a version of the RAC song cited by Micca, although he was in the Artillery during WW2, so there were no doubt variations. Alas, I didn't record or write down the words at the time.

I suspect it may have had music hall roots, on either side of the pond. (cf "Uncle Joe's Mint Balls" and "Handier Household Help")

The sheet music I have of "Lily the Pink" says "Words and music adapted and arranged by Gorman, McGear and McGough", (DT Songid=3598) so that doesn't help much, unless we can trace it back through either of those three. For the benefit of younger readers, Mike McGear's real name was Mike McCartney, brother of the more famous Paul.

Captain Terence O'Neill was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland at the beginning of the Troubles. He "tried" to bring both sides together with singular lack of success. A cousin of mine penned a little ditty on the subject of Terry which he called - funnily enough - "Terry the Pink". The chorus of this parody ran as follows:-
    We'll drink a drink a drink
    To Terry the Pink, the Pink, the Pink;
The saviour of the Ulster face.
    For he invented "Invisible Progress"
    Most efficacious in every case.
The verses are hilarious - and very caustic.

AND there is always someone to fix a link for you, a kind of bonus tracking ;-) ... and I promise, one day I will learn the secret how to find the already added lyrics by myself *BFG*!

yet the "Ball house song" problem remains. No, it was not "Bauhaus". I am not too firm with english expressions. But could this just mean something like "a song good to play at dance festivals"?

Earl, I've tried to find an MP3 on the internet with no joy (mind you I rarely seem to succeed with those). The most I have managed to find it a clip at CDNow.com by doing a title search for "lily the pink" and using the "40 Hits Of 1965-1969 link". It should give some idea what it was like - misses my favourite bit before the last chorus - We-el-el-el-ELL Drink A Drink A Drink.. though.

The song is not that well known in the US but in the 19th Century she was the most recognized woman in America. It was one of the first mass-market advertising campaigns and her picture was constantly in every newspaper in the country. Anyway, I will definitely look for the Scaffold record.

BTW, I used to be in a band with the quintessential Massachusetts couple, she was descended from Cotton Mather and he from Lydia Pinkham.

Scaffold did have a hit with a Dominic Behan song (Liverpool Lou) maybe that it the Irish Connection.

My brother is searching for the original of a german carnival song ("winke winke" by "de Höhner" from cologne). He was told the original is an irish song called "Lilly the pink". I found it mentioned in a former thread stating it is a "Ball house song". Does anyone have the lyrics? and what is a ball house song?
