Subject: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: Amos Date: 26 Sep 01 - 09:31 PM Arthur C Clarke made the point long ago that any sufficiently advanced technology woudl look like magic to the unindoctrinated. Maybe if it is two generations of advance away, rather than one, it might even appear miraculous to those who knew not how it could be. It is one thing to know how something works and be familiar with it. It's another to barely be able to accept the notion of how it works -- some people are still this way about computyers, and telling them there are little tiny switches inside going on and off a trillion times an hour doesn't cure them of saying, "It's just mad at me...". It even more removed to have absolutely no cognitive framework from which to understand how something happens. This is the outer limit of science fiction. If you were to see a device that --oh, say -- stopped time for a minute when you pushed a button -- you'd think it was a darn miracle, because it is something we can't even conceive of how it works -- we don't have to vocabulary of ideas to see it! Here's this century's next miracle, I betcha: Entangled clouds raise hope of teleportation Mind dazzling consequences loom -- not in practical reality, but may be just over the horizon -- from this remarkable (if small) step forward. Ya never know....

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: Donuel Date: 26 Sep 01 - 09:38 PM Thanks Amos I love the diversion of the bizarre quantum and cosmologic realms. Have you seen/heard the quantum tunneling transmission of a Mozart Symphony #40 through a solid metal barrier thereby exceeding the speed of light by a factor of 5 ? |

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: Amos Date: 26 Sep 01 - 09:44 PM No -- but could you explain how you got that factor? I have never heard of 500% supraluminal velocity.... |

From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 09:45 PM .....uh, yeah.................that's, uh...........like pretty wild and.........uh..................yeah, I can, uh......well..............hmmmmm...... Remember all that acid you dropped back in the 60's Amos? I mean like I don't remember half that shit, but there ya' go and Bob's your uncle. Anyway, it's either that or living out there in the land of fruits and nuts or maybe you got hold of some dubious shit to smoke tonight..........Whatever it is, I think the narcotic is about to make your ass null and void man. What bothers me most is that you may have it right and the fact that I can see it shows how much that shit took out of me! Spaw |

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: Donuel Date: 26 Sep 01 - 10:05 PM The PBS special on TIME TRAVEL had dozens of experts in the field (Hawking and the usual gang of suspects). There was a German team that claimed their laser beam allowed a small portion of its energy to quantum tunnel through an 18 inch barrier and arrive at the target sensor faster than the laser beam through a near vacuum. Other scientists said maybe so but yu can not transmit "information faster than light. The Germans then modulated the laser beam to the strains of Motzart originating from a walkman. IT STILL WORKED. The Germans said Mozart sounds like information to us. The sound was degraded but was completely identifiable. |

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: rangeroger Date: 26 Sep 01 - 10:30 PM Amos, that factor of 5 was obtained when the speed of light was slowed to 38 mph.(Remember the earlier discussion on this?). Therefore the speed of Mozart was really 190 mph. Good enough for NASCAR rr |

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: MMario Date: 27 Sep 01 - 09:11 AM just think - a few years from now, you'll be able to walk into the teleport station, get coated with parafin wax, have a battery of lasers shine on you and for half a millisecond be somewhere else! *grin* hopefully they will make it easier! |

Subject: RE: Tomorrow's Miracle: Quantum Tangles! From: Donuel Date: 27 Sep 01 - 02:08 PM This Quantum cloud idea reminds me of the most bizarre thing I have ever seen in my life. I wrote of it here before in the 'Strangest lifeforms you have ever seen' thread. It was a 6 inch cloud of light (followed by a second ball of light) that floated right through brick walls at 23 Strathallan Pk. in Rochester NY. With trepidation I reached out to touch it. Since I was not shocked I may assume they were not ball lightening but I have yet to know what they were. They were like nothing I have ever experienced in the 3D world before or since. I know of 2 other people who have also seen this. |
