I spoke with the volunteer coordinator today. They still need people for the Port of Newark to provide cell phones to foreign seamen. Any takers?

Whoops ! I meant to type New York and New Jersey, but I confess I have only visited the Newark based facility and not the New York location.

Tinker, that's the Port of New York and New Jersey. And the actual name of the mission is the Seamen's Church Institute. It's located in New York City, close to he South Street Seaport Museum. In ordinary times, it frequently hosts chantey singing.

Tinker, click here for RUS at SingOut! - they're the folks who sell this. There's an e-mail address there. Maybe they'd be willing to donate some books.

A good idea and a good cause but haven't those "Rise Up Singing" books caused enough problems already?

Have you contacted Rise Up Singing? Will they donate a case of books?

I spoke with a friend last night from the Seaman's Mission for the Port of Newark and New Jersey. They have been offering respite to workers at ground zero and the enormity of the trauma they are all working through.

Sleepless nights and restless thoughts are common. She would love to have copies of Rise Up Singing for folks to leaf through or even take home with a fly sheet added that describes Paltalk and how to find a voice in the night.

Any 'Catter's willing to donate a copy can PM me I will be collecting them for Mary and adding the flysheets. The NY Seaman's Mission is at 241 Water St ( between Peck's slip and Beakman-- 1 block North of Fulton)

For any folks near by, they are desperate for volunteers to help in port. All forgien ships are in lock down and only Americans are allowed on and off ship. They have been visiting ships with special cell phones that allow international calling cards so that the sailors can call home and reassure family and friends. No experience or language skills are needed (most sailors these days tend toward the pacific rim) just the ability to puch numbers into a cell phone. I'll PM a conntact number if anyone has even an hour to spare.
