Subject: Auf Deutsch: The Happy Wanderer
From: GUEST,Genie

These German lyrics were buried in a link buried deep in a thread buried among other threads--very hard to find and in danger of the link expiring. Since it's Oktoberfest and this song could qualify as a folk song, here are the lyrics (Wie sagt mann "lyrics" auf Deutsch?) in German.

Der fröhliche Wanderer (The Happy Wanderer)
(Melodie - Friedrich W. Möller
Melodie - Otto Richter
Melodie - Johann Michael Anding, 1810
Friedrich Sigismund, 1788-1857)

Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann,
Und mir steckt's auch im Blut;

Refrain 1: Faleri, falera, faleri,
Falera ha ha ha ha ha ha
Faleri, falera,
Und schwenke meinen Hut.

Refrain 2&3:
|: Hei-di, hei-da, hei-di, hei-da!
Und schwenke meinen Hut. :|

Das Wandern schaffet frische Lust,
Erhält das Herz gesund;
Frei atmet draußen meine Brust,
Froh singet stets mein Mund:

Refrain:

Warum singt Dir das Vögelein
So freudevoll sein Lied?
Weil's nimmer hockt, landaus, landein
Durch and're Fluren zieht.

Refrain:

Was murmelt's Bächlein dort und rauscht,

Refrain:

IIRR the song Genie quotes was one of the favourites of the late Danny Kyle. It's well known in Germany, and I think I learnt it in school. Like 'Das Wandern ist des Muellers Lust', it's too ostentatiously happy and carefree for my taste.

Susanne - don't you like to have fun in music once in awhile? I think it's a great song to sing especially the chorus. We all need stuff like that once in awhile.

Guest, I'm not against having fun, in music or elsewhere - these just aren't to my taste any more. Too saccharine - life isn't like this! That feeling probably has a lot to do with the rather predictable melodies. I admit, though, bawling these songs out is extremely helpful with walking long distances!

I recall being in an opera & singing "The Laughing Song"! If opera ain't serious, I don't know what is.

Actually, Kaleea, I am under the impression that "opere" in Italy were originally neither highbrow nor necessarily serious! They were for the common folk and often very lighthearted.

Ian,
I may be dense, but even though I think I understand what you said "auf Deutsch," I am not sure what you mean.

'life isn't like this!'

For me, it sometimes is. For example, I remember a magical afternoon in the French Alps when my husband and I came across a small cascade which attracted many butterflies. We spent a wonderful two hours, watching them an photographing them.

I don't have time to search now. Is there such a word as 'flott'?

Mr Happy your second blue clicky was of the original and best, The Obernkirchen childrens choir, it was ages from I heard it, sounds even better than it did those many years ago.

This is a good song for mountain dulcimer. I like to play "val-de-ree" on the melody string and play a very soft echo on the two lower strings.

I listened to the children's choir, and the third line is

(froh means happy)

Thanks for the link, Mr. Happy.

Well, I usually write off words like "flott" as regional fill words that don't have a particular meaning. I don't know for sure, but there must be some German dialect that uses the word.

Here's a version I found, which contains words I know that aren't archaic or regional:

Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann
Melodie - Johann Michael Anding, 1810
Text - Friedrich Sigismund, 1788-1857

Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann,
Und mir steckt's auch im Blut;
Drum wandre ich so lang ich kann,
Und schwenke meinen Hut!

Refrain: Valeri, valera, valeri,
Valera ha ha ha ha ha
Valeri, valera,
Und schwenke meinen Hut.

Das Wandern schafft stets neue Lust,
Erhält das Herz gesund;
Frei atmet draußen meine Brust,
Froh singet dann mein Mund:

Refrain:

Warum singt Dir das Vögelein
So freudevoll sein Lied?
Weil's immer fliegt landaus, landein
Durch alle Fluren zieht.

Refrain:

Was murmelt's Bächlein dort und rauscht,

Refrain:

from Das Große Hausbuch der Volkslieder, herausgegeben von Walter Hansen. Mosaik Verlag, 1978

Problem is, the third line doesn't scan. It needs 'froh' or a similar word.

It does scan if you replace "wandr'ich froh" with "wand-re ich".

I've always thought "flott" was broadly equivalent to "neat" or "cool" or "fab" or similar term of approval.
