Subject: You're Just a Black Little
From: Earlsgirl
Date: 30 Sep 01 - 09:59 PM

Ok, I know this is completely politically incorrect but...my pap used to sing this song and I am trying to compile them. Anyway (and again, no prejudice intended but remember 1930 was a different time) it went... Just you stay on your side of the white board fence And, honey, don't you cry Those white boys are so clean and nice But you're just a black little coon.

Thanx for any help.

Subject: Lyr Add: STAY IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD^^
From: Amos

Lilac trees are blooming in the corner by the gate,
Mammy in the little cabin door.
Curly-headed piccaninny coming home so late,
Crying 'cause his little heart is sore.
All the children playing 'round have skin so white and fair,
None of them with him will ever play.
So Mammy in her lap takes the little weeping chap,
And says, in her kind old way.

Now honey won't you stay in your own back yard,
Don't mind what the white folks do.
What show you suppose they are going to give
To a black little coon like you?
So stay on this side of the high board fence,
And honey don't you cry so hard.
Go out and play just as much as you please,
But stay in your own back yard.

Every day the children, as they passed old Mammy's place
Romping home from school at night or noon.
Peering through the fence, would see this eager little face
Such a wistful, lonesome little coon.
Till one day the little face Was gone forever more,
God had called his dusky little elf,
And Mammy in the door Sat and rocked as oft before,
And crooned to her old black self.

Now honey won't you stay in your own back yard,
Don't mind what the white folks do.
What show you suppose they are going to give
To a black little coon like you?
So stay on this side of the high board fence,
And honey don't you cry so hard.
Go out and play just as much as you please,
But stay in your own back yard.^^

Amos, thank you so much. My mother and I have been trying to put together songs my grandfather sang. This one is very close. Kinda hard to ask for in this day and age. But, really, nothing bigoted about it...just very sad...like all the songs of the time. If you know anywhere we can find the tune...let me know. Thanks again!

You might get lucky at this site which is a database of collected coon songs and other "Afro-American Songs".

Can anyone give any more information about that song? Author/Composer? Date? Performer? In what context was it published/performed? Vaudeville/music hall? Minstrel show? Amos, did you just happen to know those words, or get them from a book, or what?

Jim, if you follow this link, given by Amos above, you can page through the sheet music of "Stay in Your Own Backyard", Words by Karl Kennett, Music by Lyn Udall, copyright 1899, "sung with enormous success by Geo. Austin Moore" and also another copy, "sung with unbounded sucess by Jas. McCool." You can save these documents to your own computer as .jpg files and print them, if you wish.

If you'll give me half an hour, I'll transcribe them into my music program and post the Miditext for the tune.

Amos, thanks for the link; one of these days I'm going to figure out how to get past the first layer of "stuff" at the Library of Congress and really USE that site...

Do I still need to post the Miditext? Anyone need it?

Yes, it would help a lot to transcribe the tune, if you have time. If you can also e-mail an extra copy to me in Noteworthy Composer format (with lyrics tied to the notes for the first verse), that's better. I get overwhelmed.
Thanks, Lin.

Here's the Miditext version. I'm sorry, Joe, but I don't have Noteworthy Composer; I've been using Print Music (Finale's cheap version). I'll send you the midi file with the lyrics hyphenated; hope that will help.
