Balladeer is probably too shy to mention that her new CD will be hot off the presses soon and available at her CD launch concert on October 27th at the Free Times Cafe in Toronto.

Now that I've brought the subject up maybe she'll provide details and tell those who can't make the launch how to get a copy.

Gee, Tony, thanks for bringing that up! I just got word that the CD is ready to be picked up from the factory, so I'll be loading my car with five hundred of them today. It's just about one year exactly since Paul Mills and I had our first production meeting. By the way, in addition to his highly acclaimed Curly Boy Stubbs sound, Paul plays guitar in many different styles on the album and he's joined frequently by Tom Leighton at the piano or on accordion. Filling out the band were: Bob Hewus on acoustic bass, Al Cross on drums, Don Reid on violin, Bob Ashley on piano, Chris Whiteley on trumpet, harmonica and pedal steel, and Bob DeAngelis on alto sax and clarinet. So you can see I had a lot of support for my singing on this, my first album. Some of the songs come from the traditional repertoire and some were were written by me or my friends or heroes.

There will be a launch concert on Saturday, October 27th at the Free Times Cafe in Toronto. The cost of the CD is $20. If you cannot make the concert and would like to buy the CD some other way, please e-mail me privately. And Rick, there'll be a copy set aside with your name on it.

I remember The Baladeers as Kingston Trio-type group from Lonodon, Ontario that included a young Paul Mills. Is this CD related to that?

Tedham Porterhouse: Yes it is the same Paul Mills. The Balladeers put out their own CD about 3 years ago. Paul's website is here.

Yes, Willie-O, it is difficult indeed to flog albums under an alias. The name of the album is:

JOANNE HINDLEY-SMITH CRABTREE ALL THE GOOD TIMES

I know that's a very long surname, but when I was performing professionally years ago, people knew me as Joanne Hindley-Smith. Now I'm Joanne Crabtree and I don't want to miss anyone who might recognize any of my names. I chose the alias of Balladeer long before I knew Paul or heard of his group (which is still active, by the way!)

Speaking of Kingston-Trio-type groups, once upon a time in the sixties, there was a charming trio, made up of Bob Cunningham, Dave MacMillan, and Ted Parrot (alas, Ted is now deceased) working out of Orillia, called the Fernwood Trio. Have you heard of them? They recorded the first song I ever wrote - The Prairie Song. We hung out. I played many gigs in the room where they were the house band. We lost touch when I went off to play in England in 1964 and 5. I never saw them again. Turns out, Paul Mills knows Bob Cunningham very well. So working with Paul brought me back in touch with Bob, and Dave, his mate from Fernwood days. On my new album, Bob does background vocals on two songs and Paul and I sing a duet on Dave's song, You Do the Drivin'. This was all very thrilling.
