Subject: RE: BS: HTML Practice Thread, please ignore From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Oct 01 - 04:40 AM Murray MacLeod 02-Oct-01 - 05:24 PM OK Noreen, I will bite. How do you "View Source"? Murray Noreen 02-Oct-01 - 06:24 PM With my browser, when I right-click on the mouse, a menu comes up which includes View Source, Murray. Try it. Your mileage may vary... I use Internet Explorer, and my problem with the right click on the web page is that often what you want is just the "clicky" from a posting. If you right click on a clicky, it will show you the url, but you can't do a copy and past to put it somewhere to save it or use it otherwise. You can write it down on a scrap of paper (which I always lose), and re-enter it somewhere else, but the procedure below is actually quicker. If you really want to see how somebody did something, you get the problem that the "source" can be enormous, and it can be difficult to find the specific "trick" you're looking for. A couple of techniques: If you really want to view something detailed in a web page source, BEFORE you right click and select View Source, put something very close to the thing you want to look at into the clipboard. Highlight a few "unique" characters and hit a Control-C , or do an "Edit - Copy". (In a Mudcat post, the date and time of the post works well.) Then, right click and select View Source. Then you can do a Control F (or select Edit Find), and paste (Control-V or Edit Paste) the clipboard contents into the "Find What." When you execute the "find" it will take you close to what you want to look at. If all you really want is to identify a link, I find it easier to copy a short stretch of text that includes the link and paste it into Word. Select by wiping the cursor over it with the left button held down, or click at the start, hold the shift key down and click at the end of what you want to copy. Control -C to copy, open Word, and Control - V to paste. In Word, right click on the link, and select "Hyperlink - edit". You will get a "warning" that says you should save the document before you edit the link, but you can ignore it. The "Hyperlink - edit" window will open with the url highlighted. A simple Control-C copies the link to the clipboard, and a Control-V pastes it wherever you want to put it. Might help save some steps, when you get into this html stuff. John

Subject: RE: BS: HTML Practice Thread, please ignore From: Snuffy Date: 17 Oct 01 - 08:06 AM The number codes will only work with the particular Character Set you are using (so French, Irish, German computers might show something else), but the name ones should work over a wdierrange of computers. |
Subject: RE: BS: HTML Practice Thread, please ignore From: CapriUni Date: 17 Oct 01 - 09:10 AM So, what exactly are the codes to do the scroll-arcross the screen, thing? Subject: RE: BS: HTML Practice Thread, please ignore From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Oct 01 - 03:58 AM CapriUni 17-Oct-01 - 09:10 AM I use IE, but this should work in most viewers. Right click with your mouse, anywhere on the screen where there isn't a clicky, and you should get a list of options, one of which is "view source." If you click on that, you will see the "code" for the whole thread. It should open in a new window, so when you close that window you will be back at the thread. Unfortunately - there's a lot of code in one of these, so before you go to the source, select and copy (or write down) something close to what you want to look at. Then you can do an "Edit-Find" (Ctrl F) to get close. John |

Subject: RE: BS: HTML Practice Thread, please ignore From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jun 02 - 01:53 AM Pied Piper - The most likely reason your mudcat clickies don't work in an email is that most clickies on mudcat are "local" links. The full address for this page now is: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=39670&messages=42 If the whole thing is used as the "href=" you could paste it elsewhere. Most posts are "local linked" using only: /thread.cfm?threadid=39670&messages=42 so they only work from "inside" mudcat forum. ??? John |
