There's not a lot out there on Bill Boyd. This is the best I could find, though I did not search exhaustively. Bluebird's 1975 release (AMX2-5503) of some of his thirties material is one of my favorite albums. Spanish Fandango, Under The Double Eagle, New Spanish Two Step, Strawberry Roan, Wahoo, Beaumont Rag, Going Back To My Texas Home, Steel Guitar Rag . . . they're all there.

Nope, sorry, Tiger. Different Bill Boyd altogether ~~ Western Swing musician from the 30s. (How much do I win, or is the bet only with Ian?)

Hey, Ian......

I'm willing to bet that the Bill Boyd mentioned in those John Fahey notes is our old (in the USA) cowboy hero "Hopalong" Cassidy.

It looks like no one has anything to add, so what you see here and in the linked thread is about all you are going to get, at least for now. "Maybe next year, sometime"

Oh well, and just for those who are interested, I think music for Spanish Fandango appears in the new-ish Acoustic Guitar (Magazine) published book of altered tuning stuff. Open G tuning.

Mooh.

It definately predates Miss. John Hurt. It was popular as far back as the Civil War. I believe Bill Boyd's version is pretty close to the original. During the 19th century, every well educated lady was expected to be able to play it on the guitar.

I've just noticed that CADENSA (the British Library National Sound Archive catalogue) also has a recorded version "composer: Mississipi John Hurt". Unravel it if you can!

There seem to be more than one song/tune with this title.

Levy has one entry (undated):

Title: Spanish Fandango
Composer, Lyricist, Arranger: na
Publication: Baltimore: Carr's Music Store, n.d.
Form of Composition: rondo
Instrumentation: piano

There are also some notes on the web, by John Fahey which contain the following information.

A) FANDANGOS
1. "Spanish Fandango" by Hohn Dilleshaw and the String Marvel, 1930
2. "Spanish Rag" by Herschel Brown, 1930 - a distant variation of (1)
3. "Spanish Fandango" by Bill Boyd and his Cowboy Ramblers, 1938 (sweetened' pop version of (1)
4. "Spanish Fandango" by Mississippi John Hurt, 1966. Arguably a distinct, unrelated piece, just to confuse us all.

Hope that's some help.

Cheers!
Ian
