Subject: info on spanish fandango From: GUEST,oj Date: 03 Oct 01 - 02:50 AM does anyone have info or know a book or website that may have info on the authors or history of the tune spanish fandango? |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: IanC Date: 03 Oct 01 - 04:33 AM There seem to be more than one song/tune with this title. Levy has one entry (undated):
Title: Spanish Fandango There are also some notes on the web, by John Fahey which contain the following information.
A) FANDANGOS Hope that's some help.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: IanC Date: 03 Oct 01 - 04:41 AM I've just noticed that CADENSA (the British Library National Sound Archive catalogue) also has a recorded version "composer: Mississipi John Hurt". Unravel it if you can! |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: RangerSteve Date: 03 Oct 01 - 10:24 AM It definately predates Miss. John Hurt. It was popular as far back as the Civil War. I believe Bill Boyd's version is pretty close to the original. During the 19th century, every well educated lady was expected to be able to play it on the guitar. |

Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: Mooh Date: 04 Oct 01 - 12:37 PM Oh well, and just for those who are interested, I think music for Spanish Fandango appears in the new-ish Acoustic Guitar (Magazine) published book of altered tuning stuff. Open G tuning. Mooh. |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: GUEST Date: 04 Oct 01 - 01:29 PM It looks like no one has anything to add, so what you see here and in the linked thread is about all you are going to get, at least for now. "Maybe next year, sometime" |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: Tiger Date: 04 Oct 01 - 02:11 PM Hey, Ian...... I'm willing to bet that the Bill Boyd mentioned in those John Fahey notes is our old (in the USA) cowboy hero "Hopalong" Cassidy. |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: GUEST,Dale Date: 04 Oct 01 - 02:30 PM Nope, sorry, Tiger. Different Bill Boyd altogether ~~ Western Swing musician from the 30s. (How much do I win, or is the bet only with Ian?) |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: Tiger Date: 04 Oct 01 - 06:54 PM Thanks anyway, Dale. Just adding to my knowledge base. |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: GUEST,Dale Date: 05 Oct 01 - 01:18 AM There's not a lot out there on Bill Boyd. This is the best I could find, though I did not search exhaustively. Bluebird's 1975 release (AMX2-5503) of some of his thirties material is one of my favorite albums. Spanish Fandango, Under The Double Eagle, New Spanish Two Step, Strawberry Roan, Wahoo, Beaumont Rag, Going Back To My Texas Home, Steel Guitar Rag . . . they're all there. |
Subject: RE: info on spanish fandango From: Louie Roy Date: 05 Oct 01 - 11:10 AM I still play this as I learned it some 70 years ago on a G tuned guitar.I don't know a note of music everything is by ear Louie Roy |
