From: GUEST
Date: 05 Oct 01 - 02:00 PM

Hello everybody!

There is a wonderfull gaelic song called "Croí Cróga" which I heared perfomed by Clannad. Unfortunately I don't have the lyrics. :-(

I wonder if there is anybody out there who can help me out with the gaelic lyrics and, if it is possible an english translation.

Thank you so much for your help.

Take care Angie

I checked Clannad's home page and found a reference to the song on the album Lore, 1996. There were no lyrics, however.

I could offer that Croí Cróga means Brave Heart.

Where's George Seto and Áine?

Brían

I have to say that having listened to that particular track on Clannad's CD 'Celtic Collection' in my local music store, I feel they have slipped a long way away from their original sound. They seem to me to be overly influenced by the recent 'Pop-Celtic',easy-listening stuff that Wolfgang (and others) decry even if they haven't yet descended to putting: a)shamrocks, b)round towers, c)wolfhounds(saving your presence, Wolf) or d) all of the above on the cover. As a moderately good Irish speaker I listened but could not make out the words. Maybe the listener (I almost said 'consumer') isn't really expected to bother or am I too critical, after all I can't make out the lyrics of many pop songs in English either?!

Apparently, Clannad did a lot of the music for the movie Patriot Games (Harrison Ford) and several of the reviews I read mentioned "new age sound from Clannad", so I don't think it is just you, chrisj.

Had a quick look on Google for "croi croga lyrics", but no luck. If it's any help, Croi Croga means Brave Heart (or maybe Braveheart? ;)

Click here for a 36-second "wav" file. Maybe someone can transcribe it.

Croi Croga from Clann

Fuair Rí na hAlbanna, Bás. Faraor,
Gan mac ar an tsaoil seo.
Tháinig fear as an deisceart
Rí Éamonn a hAon,
Ó, págánach cruálach.

Throid an slua
Uaisle is ísleacht,
Eatarthu féin.
Rinne dearmad go choíche
'BPatronach féin,
Seo finscéal

D'éag an Rí,
Gan mac ar an tsaoil seo
Bhí 'n teideal ag Éamonn
Throid na hóganaigh,
Daoine is tiarnaí
Eatarthu féin

Curadh go scithiúil,
A sheas i saghas cogaigh
Curadh gan anam
Curadh gan dóigh
'Crochadh tríocha
Tríocha gan uaisleacht
Agus buachaillí a bhí óg
Croí crualach
Finscéal beo

D'fháiscigh an mhaorgacht,
Ó mbriathra na hAlbanna,
Sé mbliain a bhí cróga,
Cróga go leor.
Íobair an láimh' seo
Ró-Casta, ró-bhrónach
Scairt siad a shaoirse,
Fear a bhí cróga
Croí cróga

found from google, might not be corret
