According to the current entry at the Cyberhymnal (now http://www.hymntime.com/tch/) the tune known to most people and the lyrics were written by Robert Lowry in 1860 (not 1869). The tune by Ira Sankey is less often encountered. Both can be heard at the Cyberhymnal site, which also provides PDF scores.

Subject: Lyr Add: HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?

Hi Jeff
I found this hymn site. Go to the page with the lyrics.

http://tch.simplenet.com/htm/howcanik.htm

If you have downloaded RealAudio software from the Internet then the music will start playing and you can click on the RealAudio window and choose "Save As" to save the midi-file.

Real Audio is available from: http://www.real.com/

Then, if you have downloaded a demo version of a music software program such as Noteworthy then you can load the midi file into it and then print it out. Noteworthy's demo programme allows you to print out files, but some others don't.

I've forgotten the site address for Noteworthy, but do a search via a search engine and you should find it. If not I'll search my files to find it for you.

HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?

"I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being." Psalms 146:2

(If you have speakers, but don't hear music, click here.)

Words: Unknown; some sources attribute the words and music to
Robert Lowry, 1869.

Music: Ira David Sankey (1840-1908).

If you know who wrote the words, or when the words or music
were written, please click here.

My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth's lamentation
I hear the sweet though far off hymn
That hails a new creation:
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul--
How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth;
What though the darkness gather round!
Songs in the night He giveth:
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

I lift mine eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smoothes
Since first I learned to love it:
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing:
All things are mine since I am His--
How can I keep from singing?

Helen

Thanks, Joe. I left a message at John's website a few weeks ago and have not heard from them yet. I'll ask again just in case the message was lost.

I'll also check the library for "How Can I Keep From Singing." It isn't in our new hymn book but I need to check our older ones too.

Well, Jeff, "How Can I Keep From Singing" is real easy. It's in lots of hymnals and songbooks, and it's in a McCutcheon songbook you can order by clicking on his Web site, http://www.folkmusic.com/. I'll guess that if you order a songbook and ask nicely for the "Down Came an Angel" song, they might be able to find a copy for you. Even if you don't order a songbook, they might.

I'd like to know how to acquire sheet music from 2 songs on one of John McCutcheon's early albums, "How Can I Keep From Singing?" I need sheet music for the title song (Pete Seeger recorded it too) and also a traditional Appalachian hymn "Down Came an Angel." I couldn't find the latter song on the Digital Traditions Folksong Database.

Thanks,

Jeff Bledsoe
