It is so good to see that folks still remember them, and they have good lives. I also think I remember "The Best is Yet to Come" used in a commercial, or am I bongers. |

The date is foggy, but their performance glued me to my chair. The song they sang was "The Last Thing On My Mind". From the beginning chords I was mesmerized. I didn't know people could sing like that. I remember how they sat, the words they sang, even what they wore. They helped a little girl realize there was beauty in the human voice and I've been singing ever since. Ladies - I bow to you! |

They always struck me as the female version of the Limeliters, never quite sure whether to be Folk or Contemporary, and never able to have a real hit. Their first album is still their best. It's great to know that they went on to have wonderful, productive lives. |

Your enthusiasm for our sound and our act continues to blow me away. The perspective that comes with the passage of time has proven that we did indeed have something very special to offer back then and the sound still holds today. Its just that trying to hold five alpha-females together, (all of whom sang, looked good enough & played guitar), was a daunting task as your can imagine. Fot an awful long time most people I talked to just shook there heads no when I asked if they had ever heard their music. My love affair with them started in the 60s. When I found The Mudcat everything changed, I found other "Womenfolkers" and have downloaded every soung they have made available on the net. I wore out two of their "Never Underestimate The Power Of The Womenfold" albums and thought I would never have the pleasure of hearing the rest. Their exceptional blending of harmony brought chills to your body when listening to them. oh sure there were and are other groups that sing well and harmonize, but there will never be another group like "The Womenfolk". They had a real quality that will never be equaled again. They made a lonely and borng tour of duty in the Aluetian Islands more bearable. To them I send my sincere thanks for a talent seldom seen or heard in the music business. God Bless you all. |

Stumbled on their music back in the late sixties when I played cuts of their albums on the radio here in Canada and by the time I fell in love with their music they had already disbanded and I've been searching yard sales and thrift shops for their albums ever since. I too have always wondered what happened to them and it's nice to hear they've gotten back together even if it's just to socialize and reminisce.. have spent many hours with their sensational harmonies, terrific voices and wonderful lyrics and they always bring a smile,and brighten my day. Specially enjoy their anti-war stuff like "Hey Nelly Nelly" and "First Battalion" from their Hungry i album. Thomas's tribute page came up in the search and now I am catching up on the music of the Womenfolk. I can't believe I've been missing out on such great recordings and performances for the last 40-plus years. I'm kicking myself for being such an unfocused, easily distracted young teen in those days, succumbing to the British Invasion of sounds while missing so much of those folk era years. From: GUEST,Miles Hoffmann Date: 03 Sep 08 - 05:51 AM I got introduced to the Womenfolk in Dec of 1964 on a late night AM radio program called "Guest Star" with Lou Crosby. "Guest Star" was a program sponsored by the US Savings Bonds. From then, going forward into the 70's I managed to find the debut album from our local library and made a cassette recording. Since then, I forgot about The Womenfolk ... until into this decade when I stumbled across a "45" with their interesting tune . "Little Boxes in a thrift store. ..which revived my interest in this group. Going on more thrift store ventures, to my surprise, I did find that LP transcription of "Guest Star" mentioned above...and now have a safe copy of that original program. And, thank goodness with the presence of eBay, I have now 5 copies of their self titled album, plus their "actual" debut album that they recorded with the Villagers. It's fun to live great memories again .... |

My true mission is to download the Hungry i album. My late uncle had it (and the LP is probably in my aunt's loft). I loved it so much as a child. Yesterday I tried to download it from Amazon, but they refused to sell me it as I am in the UK! I hope it will go on i-tunes as I think that's the only way non-US residents can access the albums. |

They really were a first rate group; good voices, good guitar (I think they had a bass backup player at the Bitter End, not officially part of the group.) Sad to say, the Bitter End is now "The Longest running ROCK club in New York." (And the hungry i became a strip joint prior to my getting to San Francisco; bummer.) If anyone buys the personally made $80 CDs from the previously mentioned site, you should make some copies and post their availability. Surely copyright has passed by now. |

I spent years getting the five albums that were issued. As far as I know there were only five albums. RCA should be pressured to release the albums on CD or, if not, allow Rhino or other similar labels to make clean copies. I'm tired of listening to the copies made from vinyl. Pressure from the public helped Warner to release the four mid-70's Gordon Lightfoot albums on CD, the same could happen here. So their blend and harmonies are ingrained in my music vocabulary. I probably have gone more than 25 years without hearing any of the songs but still sing them to myself when something triggers the memory. This morning I woke up with "The Maybe Song" in my head and now I'm trying to search the internet for the complete lyrics. Nothing. That song was poetry and music combined. Can anyone help me? All I've found was this website and one album on ebay but it's not one of the three that I know by heart. |

Not only did your self-titled 1964 album make the cut during my night of "purging the superfluous" from that pile of unsorted records, but I'm still listening to it here and there, as the weeks go by. I even introduced (maybe more accurately RE-introduced) the Womenfolk to my oldest brother and his wife. Both have an affinity for folk groups and folk music. They remembered "Little Boxes" and I have to admit that it was this title that really made me listen to the album, only because I remembered others in the family singing bits and pieces of this song over the years. Amusing social commentary aside, this is not what has held my attention all this time. In addition to the titles that others have praised here, I have to say that the raw power of "Don't You Rock 'Em Daddy-O" is tremendous. And your arrangement of "The Gypsy Rover" is the best I've heard - possibly my favorite cut on the album. The harmony and blend of your voices is so warm over the lilting guitar work. Thanks again, for putting the excitement of discovery back into what I feared was becoming a slightly jaded listener/collector. Andy |

I was thrilled that so many other people still love this fabulous group. I discovered them back in the Napster days (I don't regret the larceny one bit - how else would I have found them?) and was crushed when their material wasn't available on cd. So I did what a lot of others have done. I bought the records on eBay and made my own very scratchy cds. Their harmonies can make me cry and their song selection was superb. I love them all like sisters. Unlike some other contributors to this forum, I would be willing to pay $80 for their collected works on a clean cd. I hope it happens!! |

But there must be something in the air. The Womenfolk's music continues to surface. Here's MY story: I collect records - to the point that I should join "vinyl anonymous". The collection runs the gambit from turn of the (1900) century Berliner discs and Edison cylinders, to LPs, to CDs - Classical, jazz, swing, rock… you get the picture. I listen to a lot of different stuff. Anyway, last night in the basement, I was finally digging through several boxes of discs that had been sitting there waiting to be sorted, listened to, filed, or just tossed. And I came across "The Womenfolk" 1964 album. Even though I lean heavy towards classical music, I'll listen to most anything - at least once. (By the way, just by way of reference, I'm 41 and youngest in a large family, so grew up with the sound of the 60s from siblings, and 40s swing from my parents.) I thought I'll throw this disc on, give it listen while I'm sorting through the stacks, and most likely ditch it in the pile headed out the door. Well, two hours later, I found myself putting it back on the stereo time and time again in-between other records I was sorting. I'm not a real big folk music fan, but your sound was great! I was surprised at how strongly this record held my attention. It's still sitting on the lid of the turntable for when I return. So, needless to say, I've found yet another group to collect. (Now where am I gonna put another record self?) Womenfolk members: Your music continues to please, amuse and lift the soul. In the fall of 1966 I was just getting ready to leave for basic training in the Army. Needless to say, it was a trying time for me. I heard the Womenfolk for the first time on the radio singing "The Last Thing On My Mind", and called the station for the name of the group singing. I immediately went to the Mose's Melody Shop in Little Rock, Arkansas, and bought the album. While stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood during basic training I heard the Womenfolk on the jukebox in our beer garden at the PX. I must have played that song,"The Last Thing On My Mind", a hundred times(Thank goodness it only cost a nickel each time) I still have that album, and have put it on tape so I can listen to it frequently.You, Womenfolk, have been a joy in my life since the first time I heard you at 19; I just hit 60. My wife knows all your songs, too, because I sing them all the time. Thank you for giving me the best music of my life; your music got me through some trying times in my years. |

Did your life get turned upside down? Don't you know that little boys are growing? Little Rag Dolls aren't supposed to frown." However after an exhaustive search, we cannot find the lyrics to the rest of this song. does anyone here this song.. and specifically the rest of the lyrics?! Joyce James Gibbs, known professionally as Joyce James, died in Newmarket, New Hampshire, in 2001 at the age of 69, shortly after receiving her BA from the University of New Hampshire with a major in Women's Studies. She had worked for the university while taking classes part-time, but did not complete her degree until after she retired. The UNH now gives the Joyce Gibbs Award in her honor. Joyce Gibbs was a feminist religious activist who very involved in both the women's spirituality community of Goddess-worshipping Neo-Pagans and the Unitarian-Universalist Church. She was also involved in mainstream local politics, both in New Hampshire and in New York City where she lived for many years after the Womenfolk broke up. |

I thought this was their only album until checking on the internet, but even though they were more prolific than I thought, there's still very little info out there about them. Were any of the LP's made into tapes or CD's? My sisters are jealous that I have the one and only album! We used to fall asleep to a stack of folk albums when we were in grade school, The Womenfolk, Kingston Trio, Chad Mitchell Trio, etc. |

Can anybody give us a bit of a discography, naming the cuts on their albums? The links I gave a bove give a very sketchy discography. I guess I kind of wrote them off as a folk-pop group, but it sounds like a number of people here are familiar with them. I don't think you'll find them at Folk-Legacy, but it's quite likely that Collector's Choice Music or Rediscover Music would come up with a restrospective of this group. They have nothing out yet, but they keep a steady flow of new reissues. I just got a Back Porch Majority CD from Collector's Choice, and I was very pleased to get a We Five 2-LP CD from them a while back. -Joe Offer- |

Bookfinder and/or amazon.com are places to try. One I got at Vinyl Resting Place in Portland Oregon.
