I suppose the Yiddish would be transliterated "Zing mir," but the German is pronounced "Zing." Lacking any evidence to the contrary, I'd kinda doubt that there's a Yiddish version. I didn't find anything like this in my Yiddish songbooks, and I have a whole shelf of Yiddish songbooks.

Q, it depends on whether you want an actual translation of the German lyrics or just "an English version."

The English lyrics to "Sing Me To Sleep" are not a true translation of the German lyrics to "Sing Mir Dein Leid" (Sing Me Your Song) throughout, although the basic sentiments are comparable.

The German lyrics posted in the other thread have several typos, leading to confusion about the meaning and translation. I've posted the corrected lyrics there, with as close to an actual translation as I can come up with (my German not being all that fluent).

Here are the
(corrected) German lyrics with my attempted translation:

As posted in the other thread (linked above), the original sheet music with both German and English lyrics is on line at Levy Sheet Music, so no need to use a google translation.

It's fine for this to be a separate thread, if only as a search for the Yiddish lyrics (if a Yiddish version exists).   I would love to have those lyrics.

Running the above through Google translate produces :-

Sing mir den Schlaf die Schatten fallen
Lassen Sie mich die Welt vergessen und alle
Müde ist mein Herz den Tag ist so lang,
Lassen Sie wird bald auch Gesang kommen

Sing mir deine Hand in meiner Schlaf

Is this any help or do you know how to suck eggs?

This thread was in the unanswered requests and I had something new to add to it. That's the point.

what is the point of reviving a request made ten years ago? Esp. when another thread handles the topic?

Sing Me To Sleep

Sing me to sleep the shadows fall
Let me forget the world and all
Tired is my heart the day is so long
Let is soon come to even song

Sing me to sleep your hand in mine
Our fingers as in prayer entwine
Only your voice love let me hear
Singing to tell me you are near

Love I am lonely years are so long
I want you only you and your song
Dark is life's shore love night is so deep
Leave me no more love sing me to sleep

Sing me to sleep with you alone
Stay with me and remain my own
Gladly my heart will know no pain
When I awake from sleep again

Sing me to sleep and let me rest
Of all the world I love you best
Nothing is faithful nothing true
In heaven or earth but God and you

Love I am lonely years are so long
I want you only you and your song
Dark is life's shore love night is so deep
Leave me no more love sing me to sleep

found that at

http://community.nbtsc.org/wiki/LullabySongs

As y'all can see, it ain't Yiddish. I'll go look more.

Thanks to everyone for their kindness in trying to find the lyrics for this German song, and, yes it is a lullaby. I should not have referred to it as a "drinking and cheating" song. We have only the first line in German. Once again Thank You for your Help, I am new to boards, and do not understand threads.

Noreen,

do you only have the first line in German, or some more lines in German script? If yes, contact me, send me a xerox, and I'm will dechyphre it.
From the 1st stanza it seems to be a lullaby.

Greetings Wilfried

Not easy, this. 'Zing' instead of 'sing' shows it is Yiddish, but nothing close to it is in the largest online-database of Yiddisch songs. Also the largest database of German songs (ingeb.org) has no hit for these words.

I'll have a look at home but without much hope.

The dubious bit is 'Augen zu'. The old German way of writing a 'z' is similar to writing a 'g'.

Wolfgang

Reposted form a poorly-titled thread here, the following request:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: LYRICS WANTED
From: Glimmer
Date: 07-Oct-01 - 01:59 PM

I am desperate to find the lyrics for my husband's 92 year old aunt, for a song her Mother sang to her when she was a baby, perhaps we could fit it into your expertise by calling it a German folk song, and perhaps it is. The German title is "Zing mir zu Schlaff die Augenzu (Auzenzu?)(92 year old handwriting!). Wanted German lyrics.

English version: Sing me to sleep and let me rest. Of all the world I love you best. Nothing is faithful, nothing true On earth or in Heaven, but God and you.

Sounds like a lullaby, but I think it is an early German "drinking and cheating' songs.

Glimmer, it's best to start new threads for new requests, giving the song title or other helpful info in the thread title-- AFTER searching Mudcat and maybe Google first.

Some tips about how to do that (and other Mudcat Magic) are in the FAQ thread at the top of the thread list.

~Susan
