Hi Jeff, nice to see this thread rise from the grave. Haven't revisited this song for a good while now but reading through the lyrics it all comes back to me now as do the reasons why it resonates with me.

Will have a crack at it over the weekend while recovering from the shock of Brexit, or maybe I'll be looking at writing a dirge instead :-)

Cheers,

Andrez

GYPSY MOTH (Hoyt Axton)

(G)The Gypsy Moth is a (C)mighty high (G)flyer,
Sailing on an (D)inland (G)sea.
(C)You are the object of (G)my desire, the (C)sun and the moon to (D)me.
(C)I believe in (G)lov'in you, (C)know that you keep me from feeling blue,
And you make me happy, when everything I (D)do gets me in (G)trouble.
But river can rock, river can (C)roll,
River can carry you (D)down to the (G)sea.

(G)Ramblin' Jack had a (C)woman he (G)loved,
But the woman didn't (D)love Jack (G)back.
She (C)took his smile. She (G)took his child. She (C)took everything he (D)had.
(C)River was the (G)name she used. (C)You know, she kept him so damn confused.
She made him unhappy, 'n everything she (D)did got him in (G)trouble.
But river can rock, river can (C)roll,
River can carry Jack (D)down to the (G)sea.

(G)Many long years have (C)come and (G)gone
Since John F. (D)Kennedy (G)died.
(C)I'm not sure but (G)what that man was (C)downright cruci-(D)fied.
By the (C)same bad guy's still (G)telling lies.
(C)you know they keep us used and abused.
They make us unhappy, 'n everything they (D)do gets us in (G)trouble.
But river can rock, river can (C)roll,
River can carry us (D)down to the (G)sea.

(G)The black raccoon by the (C)light of the (G)moon
Heard the music playing (D)soft and (G)low.
And the (C)songs we sang made the (G)nighttime ring,
And the (C)raccoon loved the (D)show.
And (C)he went back and (G)told his friends, (C)"You know them humans
Who live on the edge of the forest, they all had a party,
And man, they really (D)played my kind of (G)music!"
Saying, river can rock, river can (C)roll,
River can carry me (D)down to the (G)sea.

And (G)the Gypsy Moth is a (C)mighty high (G)flyer,
Sailing on an (D)inland (G)sea.
(C)You are the object of (G)my desire, the (C)sun and the moon to (D)me.
(C)I believe in (G)lov'in you, (C)know that you keep me from feeling blue,
And you make me happy, when everything I (D)do gets me in (G)trouble..
Everything I (D)do gets me in (G)trouble.
Everything I (D)do gets me in (G)trouble.

Hoyt plays this song in open E tuning. It's mostly just E-A-E-A all the way through and if you just mess around with the tuning you'll figure out the specifics of the song.

My guitar teacher Rita Clark is a professional performer and is pretty good at this, though you never really know for sure. She worked out these chords for me to use. It works for my purposes, so consider this way too. Oh yeah, and these are the way I think the lyrics go:

(D) The Gypsy Moth is a mighty high flyer, (G) sailing on an inland (D) sea.
(G) You are the object of (D) my desire, (C) you're the sun and the moon to (D) me.
(G) I believe in (D) loving you (G)know that you (C) keep me from feeling blue,
(D) Hey you make me (C) happy, when (G) everything I (D) do gets me in trouble

(D) Sing, river could (C) rock, (G) river could (D) roll,
(C) River could (G) carry you down to the (D) sea.

I'm not really convinced by the G7 followed by G. The tricky thing here is that there appears to be a key change in the chorus. There may be more useful chords for transitioning between the verse and chorus.

Freddie White is the one I learnt from an siblings album when I was younger. Years ago I posted the same request on mudcat looking for chords but to no avail.

Here are some ideas. Its my first attempt and I'm sure it can be improved upon. You might disagree entirely with some parts but it works for me. If its not working then your version of the song might be different or maybe its just that I haven't heard the song for a few years and am bending it to fit the chords or maybe you are singing in a different key. Anyway give it a go and see what happens.

(G) The Gypsy Moth is a (C) mighty high (G) flyer, sailing on (C) land and (G) sea.
(C) You are the object of (G) my desire, (C) the sun and the (D) moon to (G) me.
(C) I believe in (G) love and you (C)know that you (F) keep me from feeling blue,
(C) And you make me (F) happy, when (C) everything I do gets me in (G7) troub (G)le

Saying, (G)river could rock, river could (C) roll,
(G) River could carry me (C) down to (D) the (G) sea.

i haven't listened to that song in a while, but i just felt like learning it on guitar so i looked up some lyrics and found this, and i can distinctly remember a finger picking thing going on in this song. it may be the fact that hoyt sings so damn low, he prolly has his guitar tuned super low to match, doing that may cause his deep voice coincide with the guitar picking. listen to it a bundle and you may hear it... otherwise... well... i'm prolly just a tard.
good luck findin chards!

If someone can post the melody, it should be possible to work out the chords from that.

that's about the oddest thing i ever heard...actually there is
guitar strumming leading into the song and in the background...
WAY IN THE BACKGROUND..

i amplified the wav/sound about 500%...even then it would be
extremely difficult ID the chords...

Could anyone help to do some chords for this song? I just cant seem to get it right. Any help much appreciated.

GYPSY MOTH
(Hoyt Axton)

The Gypsy Moth is a mighty high flyer, sailing on land and sea.
You are the object of my desire, the sun and the moon to me.
I believe in love and you know that you keep me from feeling blue,
And you make me happy, when everything I do gets me in trouble.

But river can rock, river can roll,
River can carry you down to the sea.

Ramblin' Jack had a woman he loved, but the woman didn't love Jack back.
She took his smile. She took his child. She took everything he had.
River was the name she used. You know, she kept him so damn confused.
She made him unhappy, 'n everything she did got him in trouble.

But river could rock, river could roll,
River could carry Jack down to the sea.

Many long years have come and gone since John F. Kennedy died.
I'm not sure but what that man was downright crucified.
By the same bad guy's still telling lies. you know they keep us used and abused.
They make us unhappy, 'n everything they do gets us in trouble.

But river could rock, river could roll,
River could carry us down to the sea.

The black raccoon by the light of the moon heard the music playing soft and low.
And the songs we sang made the nighttime ring, and the raccoon loved the show.
And he went back and told his friends, "You know them humans who live on the edge of the forest, they all had a party, and man, they really played my kind of music!"

Saying, river could rock, river could roll,
River could carry me down to the sea.

And the Gypsy Moth is a mighty high flyer, sailing on land and sea.
You are the object of my desire, the sun and the moon to me.
I believe in love and you know that you keep me from feeling blue.
And you make me happy, when everything I do gets me in trouble.

Everything I do gets me in trouble.
Everything I do gets me in trouble.
